Leadership to me is so much more than the definition of the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. To me, being a good leader means that you are dedicated to your organization, you believe in the future for the group, you trust in the people you work with and you want to make a difference. A leader should be responsible, dedicated, hard working and should take initiative for the group. They should represent the organization and be able to speak for the voiceless, creating a sense of community and a welcoming, accepting space. A leader is someone who takes charge to make a difference, guiding the team members along the way. I work hard every day to be a good leader and I really believe that I have become one. So, I’m currently working on getting involved with the band I’m in. I have hopes to become section leader in the near future. I’m in the clarinet section in the Burlington Teen Tour Band and they have become my family. Any way I can be more involved with that group would mean so much to me. Section leader is the first step. I can start with the people I know best, leading them how I was lead and teaching them what I’ve learned. I can be a bigger part of the group where my parents met, the place I’ve also come to love. By taking this leadership role, I can help the organization to run smoothly the way it always has, I can help the new members learn to love the band as much as I have. Drum major would be the next step up from section leader and it’s another position I would love to have and I am working hard to get there. The drum majors are like the band director’s right hand men, overseeing details, putting the work of the section leaders together into the formatting they need to be, etc. The drum majors represent the band and because I’m so passionate about the group I would love to have the honour and responsibility of leading the band. Another honour I’m striving to achieve is the Student of Excellence award, which recognizes the hard work, leadership and dedication of a student to the school. I hope that if I win the award it will acknowledge that hard work does pay off and that you don’t need to be popular to be successful. Winning the Student of Excellence award would also mean a lot to me as an individual. I’m surrounded by successful people in my family and friends, several of which of won this very award, and although I try not to let that get to my head, every once in a while it’s nice to get some recognition and appreciation that all the work I do is worth it.
