The greatest accomplishment for me regarding extracurricular activities is my dedication to the organization Relay for Life. I have been a team leader for four years and hopefully a fifth in the summer. As a shy person becoming a team leader in such a big organization put me out of my comfort zone, but I am grateful that I decided to push myself because it allowed me to grow as a leader. In last year’s event I was able to lead my team into being one of the top five teams for fundraising. Before my involvement with Relay for Life I never saw myself as a leader. Now that I have pushed myself outside of my comfort zone I am much more confident that I can lead a team to success. This newfound confidence led me to be a co-leader for a robotics team, …show more content…
I am happy to say it is not culinary arts and it is not chemistry, engineering, or microbiology, but a captivating combination of all of these fields. Food science is a true applied science and I am grateful that I found a major that I am interesting in and will allow me to make a difference in the world. How I ended up choosing food science goes back to middle school where my current life goal was to become a chef. I loved the food network and cooking at home. The feeling when someone likes a meal that you created is an indescribable sensation of achievement. However, in high school I found a passion for chemistry. I switched my goals and was determined to become a chemist, but the thought of leaving behind my passion for culinary arts filled me with overwhelming regret. With college approaching I went to my Mom with my dilemma and she enlightened me about the field of food science. I knew she was a food scientist, but I had no idea what that entailed. She explained that it’s a mixture of everything I love: chemistry, biology, and of course, cooking. I am proud of my major and do not mind explaining it to my peers every time I am asked what my major is. I do not mind when someone says “Isn’t that just cooking,” because I know that this major will allow me to accomplish great things, and impact the lives of …show more content…
This scholarship will help me focus on getting involved and taking greater risks to become both a better leader and a better food scientist. It would open the doors to many opportunities such as studying abroad in Paris, a country I have wanted to visit since I was twelve where I could study the microbiology of cheese and wine. Or it could take me to Italy where I can learn about food systems and sustainability. The opportunities are there, and this scholarship would give me the power the take advantage of these opportunities. Traveling has always been a dream of mine, but in my current situation it would be difficult to go anywhere with the current costs of tuition, books, and general expenses. The feeding tomorrow scholarship would grant me the opportunity to expand my knowledge of food science across new cultures I have yet to experience. As a recipient of the Institute of Food Technologists Feeding Tomorrow Freshman Scholarship I am happy to say the scholarship helped me pursue my degree by allowing me to focus on my academia and excel in my Freshman year at Rutgers University, ending the first semester in the top 10% of my class of around 6,500 students. With the General Undergraduate Scholarship I would be able to continue to excel in my studies, but also gain access to new opportunities such as studying abroad and focusing on a research position or an
One extracurricular activity that I am very passionate about would be the FFA. FFA has taught me so many things and it has brought me so many places. I 've learned how to be a great speaker from different events my advisor has challenged me to do. Public speaking has taken me so many places and I have attributed most of my success to FFA. When I was a freshmen I competed and received gold in the creed speaking competition. As a sophomore, I tried extemporaneous speaking and received a gold for that as well. As a junior I really wanted to challenge myself so I took up agricultural sales as my winter career development experience. I ended up being recognized as the state runner up individual agriculture salesman as well as the 15th best agricultural sales man in the nation. Now as a senior, I have been going around speaking at different school board meetings, advocating
I started high school with a broken heart. My father died when I was 13, not long before I started high school. I worked hard in school not only for him, but because working hard is who I am. He taught me that if you want something you have to go out and get it yourself and what I wanted to do was go to college. I have put myself through a lot in just this past year alone, applying for scholarships nonstop and earning my license so I can finally get a job. I want to be a successful, responsible person so I can make my father, wherever he is, proud of how far I was able to come after he was gone. Yes I’ve gone through a tragedy, but I’ve let it motivate me in a positive way, pushing me to be the best I can be.
The best leadership accomplishment that demonstrates my potential to make significant contributions to the campus community and broader society is cheerleading. Cheerleading has made a huge impact on my life and has created many opportunities for me. It has paved the way for my high school career. Cheerleading provided me with opportunities to lead, volunteer, perform and show the athletic ability of our squad.
One of the biggest accomplishments that I feel I have achieved is being a captain for my soccer team when I was in grade 9 (overseas). Back when I was in Ethiopia, soccer was one of the biggest things we loved growing up. Soccer was the only thing available as a sport in our school, so being a captain of a team was kind of a big deal. My time as a captain taught me a lot of things about what being in a position of power means.

Another accomplishment that stood out to me was the founding and development of my Berks County Chemistry Outreach Club. Recruiting and managing my club members during freshman year was especially challenging. I remember struggling to create short and simple lesson plans, while keeping the students engaged and active. I recall students having difficulties with the concepts and theories. To help them review the material, I posted the meeting summaries on my website. Because of the lessons learned in previous years, my fourth year now runs smoothly and
Taking these opportunities in competitions and the classroom has required a great deal of dedication on my part. Proof of my dedication to academic excellence can be seen through my accomplishments and awards. I received the class awards for both Physics and Accounting, and have also been a part of the Number Sense Team went to the Regional UIL Tournament for 2 years in a row. The accomplishment I am most proud of is my acceptance into my school's chapter of the National Honor's Society. My membership holds me to a higher standard of excellence that I use as motivation to continue striving for my ultimate goal of having a positive impact on society. My extra-curricular activities have also aided me in pursuing my goal. My participation in Student Council and other organizations in which I am an officer has taught me valuable, life-long lessons in leadership and collaboration. These assets and others have also been developed through my participation in my schools volleyball, basketball, and tennis programs. Through sports I have learned the incredible feats that can be accomplished through hard work, self-discipline, and
The chemistry of the human body and how it is affected by food is one of the main reasons why I became interested in nutrition. I really enjoy applying scientific knowledge to food and seeing how it can harm or benefit individuals and that is what nutrition is all about.
One of my biggest achievements was to be accepted to the Sampson Early College High School. This was an important accomplishment not only for me but also for my family. Getting accept to the early college gave me another chance to start a new beginning in my life and to become a better person among my peers. There were other achievements that were also important to me such as competing at the National Beta Club Convention at state and national where I received three awards. This huge accomplishment has given me the opportunity to express my ideas and talents to other schools across state and country and to proudly represent my school.
In high school I was voted captain of the football team by my teammates my junior and senior year which drastically improved my leadership
I have always been intrigued by the field of science and that is the reason I pursued the field of Biochemistry for my undergraduate studies. How The Human body works and the different determinants that can affect one's health or a community as a whole have always been captivating to me. I wanted to emerge in a profession that is beneficial for me, my community, and the world I live in. I came to realize through various science courses and health care experiences that a career in health care was the best path for me to outreach my community and the world.
Throughout my school career I have always loved chemistry. In Chemistry there was always a sense that there was more, there was always something new and exciting to be discovered and theories to be proven (or even disproven). Chemistry was the main subject with a real practical aspect to it during school and it is this, along with my genuine fascination with the subject, which fuels my desire to study it further.
There are many reasons why cooking is important to me such as I need food to live and it is much better when the food tastes good. Cooking is something I find enjoyable and it is an easy thing you can do with friends. When cooking with friends I like to have everyone do a little bit of everything because it makes things more enjoyable. I enjoy trying new recipes when cooking for friends and family to get a wider range of opinion. Cooking can be stressful at times but the end result makes it all worth it. Through a course I took in the summer of 2017 I earned a food handling certificate which states that I know how to properly and safely handle food. I enjoyed the course very much and it furthered my aspirations of starting a career in the culinary arts
I want to be able to learn more techniques in and out of the kitchen and restaurant. In any kitchen I cook in I want to absorb as much information and be able to learn how to control a well runned kitchen, develop relationships with chefs, and learn to create the most delicious food. I want to show my passion and hard work when I cook with others. I want to be able to grasp the techniques and create that when I have my own fine dining restaurant in the future. Working in the fine dining industry is an amazing place to cook because every time they display a plate in front of you they show you what creativity and feeling this person has behind this plate. The Culinary Institute of America education will help me get more of an understanding of what I have ahead of me in the future. The Culinary Institute of America will show me techniques on different cooking styles, work on my knife skills, help me define my taste palate, having a better understanding of what types of spices there are and how to use them. While cooking in restaurants, I plan on developing my own menu ideas based on the knowledge that the Culinary Institute of America teaches me with the techniques I 've mastered through working in restaurants in the
I would expect a scholarship recipient to use the scholarship money to further enhance their educational experiences, and in turn, bring new, revolutionary ideas to the hospitality industry as a whole. I would use the scholarship money to continue my travels and broaden my horizons to further explore the diverse cultures that the world has to offer. As John Dewey once said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” The experience gained from my extracurricular travels would most definitely allow me to excel in the hospitality
