Many people are become and are shaped by their country, beliefs, and values. Zia is an international student from Pakistan who is studying to be able to join the civil service in Pakistan. His ultimate goal is to teach political philosophy. Because he is from Pakistan he has certain different beliefs and values, from Americans, that model his behavior and interactions with others, but I won’t be talking about the person he is in Pakistan. No, I will be writing about the person Zia is here at Concordia College-Moorhead and the impact he has had on those around him.
Since people who have different identities view the American Dream in a variety of perspectives, individuals need to find identities in order to have a deep understanding of obstacles they will face and voices they want. In The Woman Warrior, Maxing Hong Kingston, a Chinese American, struggles to find her identity which both the traditional Chinese culture and the American culture have effects on. However, in The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros clearly identifies herself as a Hispanic woman, and pivots to move up economically and socially to speak for her race. Even though both Kingston and Cisneros look for meanings of their identities, they have different approaches of reaching the full understanding.
The term American Dream was initially set by James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of American which was written in 1931. In the book, James Truslow Adams (1931) stated that the American Dream was a dream of having a land to stay; each person had a better, richer and more fulfilling life, and those who had the ability or achievement were always full of opportunities. In the video of the American Dream, it assumes that is also a belief that as long as the American do a hard struggle, they will be able to achieve the idea of a successful life. It’s suitable to say in the 21st century in some specific example but not all situation. (Citation) In addition, American Dream existed long before the words created. In the colonial period, the immigrants
Every person has an American Dream they want to pursue, achieve and live. Many people write down goals for themselves in order to get to their dream. Those never ending goals can range from academic to personal. As of today, I am living my dream. My American Dream is to become a nurse, travel to many places, have a family, and get more involved with God.
Everyone grows up with the thought of an American dream in mind . Unfortunately that American dream is only limited to the people who are not of color. Sadly the people of color and the american dream don 't match up to well. I feel that this is because it can’t be easily obtained due to improper education and never being given the opportunity to show what they’re made of. Maybe if we weren 't categorized by our living arrangements, or the amount of our wealth, or better yet being presumed as these incompetent animals who aren’t good for nothing. Then we too would be able to achieve our own american dreams ,but as people of color the chances of that are not likely living in a world that feeds us with this improper mindset.
America is in a Great Recession, and the American Dream seems to be dying (if not already dead) to many Americans. I don’t think that the American Dream is dead; it just needs rehabilitation due to the injuries it sustained from the hands of an unregulated government. Though we are in a Great Recession, every American can progress their lives for the betterment of themselves and future generations. According to Brandon King (2011) in The American Dream: Dead, Alive, or on Hold?: “…the most worrisome problem is inequality: that wealth is concentrated into the hands of a rich minority.” Because of this, many Americans and politicians are arguing about either “raising the taxes on the rich” or “supporting the richest sectors in America” (Thomas, 2011) to stimulate the economy. In the articles I have read in They Say, I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, both Cal Thomas and Brandon King seem to believe that the government should not tax the rich minority more than the poor majority. I disagree with both Cal and Brandon and believe that the rich should be taxed more than the poor. However, the income from the taxes should be put to use for the betterment of the poor majority of America.
The “American dream” is what they called it. The American dream is all of the reasons summed up into one. The American dream was freedom , many immigrants came here for freedom, the freedom of speech, the freedom of religion the freedom of press so on so on. The American dream was also to start a new life start off fresh. The American dream was a new richer and better life to the immigrants that migrated to the United States of America.
The idea of “The American Dream” was founded by hard working immigrants looking for a new land of opportunity and prosperity. While many people all over the world have an idea of what this dream is, It can be broken down more specifically by the different generations and cultures that have come to the United States or grown to fulfill it. I consider “The American Dream” to be the pursuit of happiness, education, and success, and the equal opportunity that says anyone in the United States who works hard and applies themself can achieve those things. I would like to quote President Obama on this matter because he himself is somewhat the epitome of “The American Dream”. Obama says, "I think the history of the United
The American Dream is a personal thing. Every person’s belief or thought on what the American Dream is different than anybody else’s. There is one noticeable common thread between every conceivable Dream though: the dream is to live a better life socially, monetarily, or contentedly than your parents did. The conflicts at the time helps determine what aspect of life you wish to improve upon, but it will always be the same principal as long as America stands free.
The title of this blog (Life, Liberty, Happiness) outlines the three basic rights every human being is entitled to: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, often referred to by property. The first topic that this blog will explore is the United States Education System.
My American Dream is either being on the silver screen or eating breakfast in Monaco, jumping on a plane, and landing in California in time for lunch. I plan to be living out my dream as either an actress or an international traveler. The thought of being stuck in one place for the rest of my life- working a nine-to-five job with people that I have come to strongly detest makes me physically sick. I’m positive that if I were ever in that situation I would lose my mind and come up with crazy scenarios for myself such as Gatsby. I feel as though my life lacks adventure and if I were to become an actress or traveler, my life would be so full of adventures and stories to tell that people would get sick of me.
It is possible to obtain what you aspire to have. No matter how many certain half-deserted streets you wander through, no matter how many obstacles you come across and whatever it is that may stand in your way, the American Dream will always be obtainable. The things you must do to achieve the American Dream may have been altered, it is most certainly still something that is able to be reached in society today. Some people may have it easier and could be born into the dream or into situations to where the dream is almost already in reach. On the other hand, there are people who work out of a valley of ashes; where ashes take the form of houses and chimneys but yet, the hard working American citizen still comes out on top. The American
My great grandfather, Simon Harris, grew up in a small town. He grew up with two brothers and four sisters which his parents had to support. His family was low income. He had walked and hitchhiked his way to Decatur to be able to live on his own at the age of fourteen. He overcame many struggles, due to leaving his family at such a young age. But through his hard work and determination, he made it out of the life of poverty which he had grown up in. He did everything to his best ability. He worked hard and long hours, in order to make a better life for himself. He is an example that the American Dream is achievable, no matter how you are brought up, you just have to be willing to put in the effort. The American dream is the ideal that through hard work, determination, and some sacrifice, every US citizen should be able to achieve success.
The American dream is the ability of not having to worry about your financial status as well as being able to achieve more than what your parents previously achieved. The American dream is the desire that your future generations achieve more than you have and hoping to provide more to your children than that of your own parents. I surely believe that the American dream still exists, yet over time it has been more and more difficult to achieve and has become further limited to most Americans. The modern day American Dream has new essentials needed to completely acquire the dream. Having special skills like self-confidence and determination are vital for the dream, along with being optimistic, hard working and being able to deflect negative people
As I am preparing for a new chapter in my life, I have put a lot thought in about what I want out of life and what to look forward to as I get older. In order for one to achieve anything, they need to set goals to reach for. I have a handful of goals for my future, short term and long term, that I will actively work towards in my college years and beyond. In my time at UW Eau Claire, I plan to be involved and engaged in student activities on campus. Being active will help me meet new people, build a better resume, and have fun at college. At UWEC, I would like to get involved in anything musical, along with various clubs and Greek life. Similarly, another goal of mine is to have a job on campus. Having a job will not only help me make some
