The American dream is the ability of not having to worry about your financial status as well as being able to achieve more than what your parents previously achieved. The American dream is the desire that your future generations achieve more than you have and hoping to provide more to your children than that of your own parents. I surely believe that the American dream still exists, yet over time it has been more and more difficult to achieve and has become further limited to most Americans. The modern day American Dream has new essentials needed to completely acquire the dream. Having the special skills like confidence and self perseverance are basic necessities to achieve the dream, but in today’s world it is something that most of us lack. The Forbes article “Why Most People Will never Achieve the American Dream” by Glenn Llopis explains the difficulty of achieving the 21st century American Dream. Llopis (1) states “This is why we speak of the new American Dream. Unlike the past, when all you needed was a college degree to increase your chances of achieving the dream- today much more is required for you to even be considered to earn the right to pursue the dream.”He explains to the audience that the modern American Dream is much harder to really reach. Even a person who would be described to be intellectual and perfect for the Dream needs more to successfully achieve the it. The new American Dream requires so much more nowadays and your chances of actually succeeding are very low, therefore making the American Dream nearly impossible to reach for most Americans. Llopis (1) describes that “You must balance knowledge (the head) with wisdom (the heart).” Meaning, not only do you have to be bright but you need the special talent of being optimistic, which is a skill that many of us do not hold. Some people are not considerate of other’s peoples dream and will do anything to make sure that only their dream is successful. Dana Gioia, author of the poem “Money” states “Money. You don’t know where it’s been, but you put it where your mouth is. And it talks.” Tells the reader that Americans really don’t care where the money has been or how they got it as long as they get it. Americans are greedy and narcissistic, they’ll step on anyone to get what they want and usually don’t stop until they do. Gioia (2) gives the perfect example American’s geed with the story of “Richard Oden of Conyers, Ga. –married, with five children –worked in the beer industry for 23 years. Last year, he developed pneumonia and required major surgery. When he was unable to return to work by a given date, he says, his company terminated him at age 54 –even though he had a perfect attendance record and no performance problems.” The statement clearly shows that Oden’s boss/company did not care about his well-being, they would have rather hired someone else to take the place of an ill man to prevent losing money. They still decided to dismiss Oden even after he had worked with the company for 23 years, he had a perfect attendance and never had any complaints made toward him.
