According to Early Years Matters (2012), the teaching of Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is of great value as it is widely viewed as being one of the building blocks for success in life. PSED supports children’s development by helping them to interact effectively and develop positive attitudes to themselves and others and as an isolated area of the EYFS, PSED comprises of three main strands. The aims of PSED are broadly centered on developing learners who are effective and successful, resolute, emotionally and socially balanced, co-operative, respectful and with a positive mindset. The importance of children developing their own skills is paramount as it is widely accepted that ones social and emotional skills will change and develop over time as if the experience of feeling lonely is considered, how you would deal with this as a child is likely to be wholly different to how you would deal with it as an adult.
