Introduction Culture is defined as a characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts (“Culture,” n.d.). As I ponder the culture question as to whom I am, I realize I have a hard time explaining who I am. My religion is that I am a Methodist. I am quite shy when it comes to outings and friends. I have been told by the few friends I do have that I am a collector of strange and unusual facts. I like to stay to myself that way I cannot get hurt by others. As for food, I enjoy a variety of foods. I have taught myself how to cook through google and I have mastered Korean cuisine as well as several other ethnicity foods dishes. I primarily speak English, but I can speak in French, Spanish, and Korean. I enjoy music and I listen to anything from classical music to 60’s music. I enjoy art as I have visited France to be able to enjoy authentic master pieces. As I grew up and entered high school, I won a bid for a spot on our schools color guard team. All in all, I am a mother, a wife, a teacher, and a student. I make time for everyone and everything I enjoy in life and I have learned to not waste a second on anything else. Personal Reflection (Part I) The concept of teaching creativity has been around for quite some time. …show more content…
The first goal of a multicultural program is to assist children with recognizing differences, as well as similarities, among all people. Allowing children to explore varying cultures creates opportunities for them to see that even when people have different customs and traditions, they often share some common traits, too. The second goal of a multicultural program is to encourage cooperative social skills. As children learn to accept differences and similarities among people, they can work and get along with others better (King, Sims, & Osher,
Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. The statement made me change the way that I traditionally viewed Language Arts both as a student and as a teacher, as I very narrowly saw literature and works of the like as texts only; however, by considering nearly anything as a text, one can analyze, study, and even expand his/her knowledge. Kist (2010) states that society is “experiencing a vast transformation of the way we “read” and “write,” and a broadening of the way we conceptualize “literacy” (p. 2). In order to begin to experience and learn with the modern classroom and technologically advanced students, individuals must begin to see new things as literature and analyze those things in a similar manner.
Since the beginning of the year, we have read, analyzed, and interpreted different genres of literature. We read some plays, like The Twelve Angry Men, novellas like The Old Man and the Sea and Of Mice and Men, and poems like Road Not Taken. The main literary text that we went in details are short stories, for example, Scarlet Ibis and Dog Star. Some made us wonder and uncover a profound message by the author. Many stories had concepts hidden within the writing, and same concepts are used by many different authors.
Everyone comes from a different cultural background. Many of us though, never really stop to think about what defines our own, I, myself included. This is important to do though, so one, we can know ourselves better, but also so we can start to understand other cultures as well. Surrounding the idea of culture are the concepts of ethnicity, class, gender, age, and belief, each of which I will be reflecting upon. To begin with, we have the concept of ethnicity, not to be confused with race, as I often do.
How many times have people asked themselves, who am I? What defines me? Culture plays a very important role in the identity of people. People are born in a culture, their family's culture, but not with an already established culture. The term culture refers to the values, beliefs, customs, style of dress, food, songs and stories that are shared and learned in a characteristic group. On the other hand, identity is a set of features, attributes and characteristics that define a person. Identity is constructed by language, social structure, gender orientation and cultural patterns. Although many do not relate these two themes, there is a complex relationship between culture and identity.
The Learning Journal is a tool for self-reflection on the learning process. In addition to completing directed tasks, you should use the Learning Journal to document your activities, record problems you may have encountered and to draft answers for Discussion Forums and Assignments. The Learning Journal should be updated regularly (on a weekly basis), as the learning journals will be assessed by your instructor as part of your Final Grade.
For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. The reason the course was extended for them was because they were struggling with the work that was required for this qualification, but as the col...
My personal philosophy of education advocates education as a lifelong process for the learner and the teacher. Individuals have the ability to continually learn via experiences that develop knowledge and skills through various modes such as modelling, scaffolding, trial and error, practical hands on, rehearsal or repetition learning. Learning is best absorbed in a safe and structured environment that supports and promotes critical, independent thinkers. The purpose of education is to nurture and support the development of each individual to assist learners to function independently and prepare them to be a contributing member of our society who can strive to achieve for a successful future and have the ability to learn positively.
Everyone has a different view on how they learn and learning itself. First starting in EXP 105, my understanding of learning was new knowledge and becoming wiser. Taking EXP 105 has truly increased my knowledge of what learning is and the process of it. The most important thing I have learned about learning is that you observe the world around you, make sure it is understandable, and figure out the right way to respond. Learning also provides critical thinking skills. Everyone have different ways of learning and those ways are based on four different learning patterns. The four different types of learning patterns are Sequence, Precision, Technical Reasoning, and Confluence. Learning patterns are very helpful when it comes to everyday life, school work, and your job. Knowing your learning patterns and which ones you should use make
Psychology deals with the study of mental processes and a variety of behaviors. In order to fully comprehend ourselves, we need to understand the causes of our behaviors and our outlook on life. Habits and behaviors have positive and negative effects in our life. When we know ourselves and learn about our unique personality, we can develop and pursue goals. Psychology also helps us to understand other people and the differences of people. Gaining this knowledge can improve the relationships and enhance our communication skills. Throughout the psychology course I gained knowledge in various areas, and the topics that impacted me the most included: the introvert, anxiety disorders, stress management, self discipline and how to develop strong relationships.
When asked what I believed to be the greatest challenge for schools today the first thoughts that came to mind were problems such as low salary, diversity in the classroom, and changes in curriculum. As I thought further I realized that those problems are microscopic compared to the problem that the schools face with attempting to get parents involved. I am a huge advocate for the phrase “education starts at home” and I personally believe that the success of a student, not only in the classroom but life in general, truly depends on the support system that they have around them. A student must be continuously reminded that education is important in and outside of the classroom.
Teaching is not a career a person can choose, it is a career that a person must have a passion for. Teaching is a career that requires patience and nobility because it is a job that will require a lot of work with little recognition. I chose my major in education of social sciences because I have always been passionate about helping others. Throughout my life I have had the help of teachers and mentors and I believe I am where I am because of them. One day I want to help children so they can feel like they can do whatever they choose to with their life, whatever it is that makes them passionate. I think that something the US lacks is global education and that is why I want to teach in the social science. In education writing can be informal but it does require different types of research. The main types of research according to Smith and Smith (2014) are lesson plans, curriculum guides, assessment reports, classroom observations, case studies, journal writing, reflection papers, research papers, position papers, annotated bibliographies, electronic portfolios, and conference
There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann. Watching the videos and reading the chapters required has opened my eyes more of how a teacher should respond to different situations involving a student, For example when we read the chapter on the laws that revolve around the educators and the students. I had absolutely no clue that students had rights while in school property. Another learning
I remember as a child being fascinated by the notion that clergy came to their work because they were called to do so. With a brother-in-law in his thirty-fifth year of ministry, I see the necessity of that call as the commitment he has made to service has been extraordinary. Perhaps not to the same degree, but it certainly can be said that teaching is also a calling or a vocation. ************* As a graduate professional, I will strive to differentiate instruction, integrate technology, and share my knowledge and practices with others.
Throughout humanity, individuals evolved and adapted to a changing society. People have not always been perfect in their selected field, however, as time progress individuals learn to develop themselves. A common factor that drives success throughout humanity is an individual 's capacity to set goals and strive towards personal development. As we progress through life and become older, individuals tend to realize life only becomes harder, and in the working world; life is not a walk to Elysium. With each passing year, life becomes more extensive, and stress tends to consume us, although life is difficult anything can be achieved and overcome by setting goals and attempting to enhance our personal development. Personal development is the key
They always told me to plan and think ahead. But they never specified how far ahead. Well I guess now I know. Education is what you and I have been doing since we were able to talk and say our ABC’s, but is knowing how to spell our name and count to one hundred the main importance of education? I never knew the full meaning of being educated, Or to what extent education went to. I would just always take it year by year and I would always move to the next grade so I figured I had nothing to worry about. So many questions about why are these things we are doing in class so important? What are the teachers trying to prepare us for? They keep saying “Later on down the road…” but what is down the road? Why should I be preparing?
