Personal Nutrition Assessment Project
This project was an opportunity for me to learn how to educate and guide patient’s in making better nutritional decisions with the help of my experience with MyFitness Pal. I think MyFitness Pal is an excellent resource for those that are interested in improving their nutrition. Nutrition is often neglected by patient 's, therefore, as dental professionals it is important to use the latest technology to attract our patient’s to become more interested in their nutrition. The positive impact of this project has encouraged me to recommend using MyFitness Pal to my patient 's as a hands on activity to help correlate nutrition and the patient’s overall health. This project also allowed myself to become aware of the poor diet decisions I made, which will help to benefit my patient’s that have a similar diet.
I found MyFitness Pal app to be easy to navigate and interpret. I found many advantages in using this app in regards to benefiting my patient 's and myself. After recording my meals, I found the app to be accurate and precise at calculating my average percentages compared to my goal percentages. I also found the process of using MyFitness Pal to be very detailed in the list of nutrients found in my food items. Even though certain meals had to be added separately, I still thought finding those food items was easy to do. Therefore, I found tracking my own diet with the use of this app to be very useful in regards to benefiting my patient 's in the future due to the knowledge I now have from this project.

The lack of knowledge and awareness can cause an increased risk for chronic diseases that can impact a patient’s way of life. There is also a correlation between nutrition and the oral cavity, which a poor diet can cause an increase risk for dental caries.
Recommending MyFitness Pal when talking to patient 's with a poor diet can potentially increase the patient’s awareness of their lack of nutrition.

For this part of assignment, I kept record of two consecutive days of what I ate for that days and how much calories I got from that food and drinks. This process has not been easy and I have struggled to stay consistent with my healthy eating habits. Keeping my cravings under control has always been a challenge and my love of bread makes things a little harder. I also recognized that I am a stress eater. I had never paid attention to my eating patterns until I begin to keep a journal. This project has definitively helped me monitor and attain a better Healthier lifestyle.
In the original three day diet analysis, Susanne Coleman found that she was not eating from all of the food groups recommended by the food pyramid. Particularly, she was not eating the amount of fruits, vegetables and grains recommended. While she felt she made wise food decisions, there was room for improvement. When completing another three day diet analysis, Susanne received different results. After completing the original three day diet analysis, Susanne has been more conscientious of her food choices. Since the first analysis, Susanne has begun to plan meals ahead and to pack her meals for the day to stay on track.
The question comes up again; “How is your diet?” Jessica revisited her diet analysis from the first week of class. She noticed that some things have changed and some things, unfortunately, have not changed. She knew that some things would not change because of the hectic and busy semester and summer she had ahead of her but the things that did change surprised her. This class did some good for her, but she still needs some work on her diet and nutrition.
Nutrition, I have learned plays a big part in our life. To be honest I was clueless about how much nutrition affected our everyday lives. I love going to the gym working out, now that I know what should go into my diet I think I will see a lot more improvement. I occasionally follow the latest diet fads because I believed it would be better for my health, but in turn it really hurt more than it helped! This Diet Analysis project has been extremely useful course because I can personally relate to it and can use much of the information learned to my daily routines. In conclusion, the potential implications of the proposed research for practice is that if supplements are being used as a substitute for a healthy diet in today’s society due to a lack of understanding food labels. Investigate what the impacts of this are on health, if any and further education about food labelling may be necessary. The benefit of this understanding to the NHS is the possible reduction in chronic conditions related to nutrition. However the theory practice gap can only be eliminated by the implementation of evidence such as this study into practice. To implement this study to practice the researcher will need to understand, identify and overcome barriers to change (NICE, 2007).

Although the treatment process was often frustrating and challenging, I actually came to enjoy my appointments with the nutritionist in her tiny, cozy office, cluttered with food models and recipes. She taught me the basics of nutrition and helped me form a healthier relationship with food. It took time and quite a few tearful sessions, but I slowly started to view food in terms of the nutrients and benefits it could offer me instead of thinking of food as the enemy. Since we have been learning about nutrition in class, our task was to record a food log. Nutrition requires a well-balanced diet containing nutrient and vitamins like amino acids and fatty acids. Over the past seven days I have been recording and have been looking very carefully at my intake of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and fats. In our task, the objective was to record the basic foods we ate during the period of seven, but it did not require recording every single detail or our intake of food. Doing this food log was a pain and it was disturbing because I never wrote about what I ate like breakfast, lunch, dinner, or additional meals. I found this food log useful because it helped me learn what I can change in my intake of foods to make my diet healthy and to see what about my diet is affecting me from being healthy because I could affect me in the future.
One of the reason’s why I felt my nutrition needed to changes is because nutrition is a huge part of a healthy lifestyle, the way that we eat and what foods we consume can have a huge impact on our everyday lives. Nutrition plays a huge role in multiple facets of a person’s life energy, health, skin, weight, confidence, and more making having a good control on your eating habits extremely important. How we eat over the years and what foods we routinely choose to eat can eventually have a lasting effect on use and what we consider to be most appealing and appetizing at any given moment. Having these craving and routine habits makes eating, diet, and nutrition both a behavior and a lifestyle choice that can be changed over time with help from the theories learned in this class.
Holistic nutrition assesses the health history, diet habits and the lifestyle of an individual patient to determine the cause of underlying health issues and the most organic approach to deal with the health problem (Rustad & Smith, 2013). Rustad & Smith argues that community education plays a significant role in the practice of holistic nutrition to change the current nutrition behaviors amongst populations which are detrimental to health. Evidence based nutrition are guidelines that have been developed to assist in nutrition decision making which promotes appropriate nutrition care for specific diseases such as diabetes. Department of Health & Human Services defines nutritional assessment as: “measurement of indicators of dietary status & nutrition-related health status to identify the possible occurrence, nature, & extent of impaired nutritional status,” which can range from deficiency to toxicity” (Nnakwe, N. E., 2018). Tools to help assess will include anthropometric, biochemical test, clinical/physical observations, dietary intake data, and epidemiological information. I should be able to identify and label specific nutrition problems that can be independently resolved or improved through nutrition intervention.
