(paragraph 16) Lee was going haywire because she was separated from her family and wasn’t going to abandon them. If she was going to make it to freedom, she was taking her loved ones with her." In broken English, and with a dictionary, I explained my situation, and without hesitating, the man went to the ATM, and he paid the rest of the money for my family." (paragraph 17) Lee was trying to brainstorm some ideas on how to come to her family's rescue, when a stranger saw she was in distress. She needed to let all her problems out to someone. After explaining everything, the man was nice enough to help her with the pickle she was in. June Callwood starts her essay by describing the story of a woman who had just recently moved to Canada and was being abused by her husband. The author describes the way people constantly talked about how someone should help the poor woman, but no one actually stepped up and did. A few days later, though, a fund had been established to help the woman, and she had
The author begins the story with a strong statement, “I found myself in a Chinese funeral parlor because of a phone call I made to my cleaning lady” (Schmitt); it takes the reader right into the funeral parlor and draws the reader into the story: how she got to the funeral parlor and what she doing there was the question I had. She starts the story with some background about how she got to China. Then moves on to the funeral that was happening in her neighbors’ home. She describes how the family was grievously weeping as she was walking toward her apartment. She noticed what happened and wonder why they were weeping. “Do you know why the neighbors are very sad?” she asked her cleaning lady.
This biography is not just about the story of Hamilton, but the story of a country’s legacy in the making. The first sections of the book detail Hamilton’s early life in the Caribbean, “surrounded by failed, broken and embittered people” (Chernow 26). Chernow displays how Hamilton, like any of us, had baggage from his past he wanted to keep a secret. One of the best effects of the biography is how it doesn’t portray Hamilton as the “hero” of the story. He is an actual person with flaws and not everyone liked him. Not only does this book describe the life of Hamilton, but the people around him as well. Chernow tells the story of his family, enemies, and friends.
Survival, a life or death situation, one wrong move and you could die. It’s hard to remain calm in these situations, but some can do it. Lee had to escape from North Korea, Ralston was trapped alone under a rock, and Rainsford was being hunted alive, they survived from three things. It took Lee’s courage, Ralston’s Endurance, and Rainsford’s Intelligence to show they were survivors.

(Trans) To begin, one survivor that showed determination was Hyeonseo Lee. For example on page two of the article, "My escape From North Korea," Lee states "...even though adjusting to my new life was not easy, I made a plan. " Lee had already escaped from North Korea to China, but she was still in danger. She was determined to be safe and have freedom, so she decided to risk her life again and escape from China. When Lee arrived in South Korea, she had to start her life over again. This was difficult and took determination
Maybe it’s the fact that I tend to stay in my room all weekend, which leads to people thinking I’m studying when in reality I am probably binge watching a TV show or maybe it’s my glasses, but most people who don’t know me too well assume that I am smart. Now that is a great thing for me because I don’t have to try as hard to impress them, but I end up finding myself in a bit of a problem. The problem is that everyone thinks I enjoy admiring school textbooks. But the truth is I’m usually admiring my Justin Bieber poster on my bedroom wall. Ever since I was in sixth grade I’ve been a huge fan of Bieber. His music always brought a feeling of calmness and back in the day his “never say never” motto, was what I lived by. I might still be living by that motto because I’ve decided to write this essay
A testimony from an 82 year old woman showing what she went through during the Nanjing Massacre when she was in her early twenties. Her name is Wen Sunshi, and she was just married the year before. Wen’s family took refuge at a nearby company building. On their way they witnessed Japanese warships mow down Chinese troops trying to escape over the river. Eventually six or seven troops arrived to find us. Each man armed with guns and knives hanging by their waists. They then took six or seven maidens from the refugees, including Wen. The man forced Wen to take off her pants or he would kill her. After the rapping she was released by the officer saying, “Opened path, opened path.” After this the owners of the business took about eighteen maidens down to the egg beating room, where Wen lived in there for over a year, until returning home. Wen’s cousin was taken by the Japanese army and never returned at age eighteen. Wen even witnessed an elderly women get brutally murdered by the Japanese, with her stomach slashed opened. H) In the jungle, under an enormous tree log made of oak wood that smells like old newspaper, and you’re looking at a night so full of stars that the darkness seems transparent. Soon you hear the sound of an old 90’s stereo playing the Beastie Boys’ greatest hits with the music so loud that your ears pop and they start aching as funky beat the inches closer and closer. Then you hear the noisy voices modern American family calling an ambulance and you know that you’ve survived. B) Being a survivor takes a lot of heart and soul of you. Just ask Hyeonseo Lee, Aron Ralston, and Alison Dilaurentis and Cece Drake off of Pretty Little Liars. Lee had to survive without her family, Ralston had to survive being trapped under a rock, and Alison and Cece had to survive mental and physical pain. T) Lee’s courage, Ralston’s clever, and Alison and Cece’s endurance made them survivors.
"To be the best you must be able to handle the worst" (Wilson Kanadi). There are many situations that can test a person or group of people's abilities to survive. Bethany Hamilton, got her arm bit off by a shark. Hyeonseo Lee, escaped Noth Korea and Aron Ralston got his hand stuck in between two canyons. These are all people who are able to stay strong in spite of difficulty. For a person to be a survivor it takes mental fitness, perseverance and courage.
Most women in Mrs Mallard’s situation were expected to be upset at the news of her husbands death, and they would worry more about her heart trouble, since the news could worsen her condition. However, her reaction is very different. At first she gets emotional and cries in front of her sister and her husbands friend, Richard. A little after, Mrs. Mallard finally sees an opportunity of freedom from her husbands death. She is crying in her bedroom, but then she starts to think of the freedom that she now has in her hands. “When she abandoned herse...
Despite the challenges they had to face the danger and put their lives in risk knowing that they will make them fight for their dreams.
When I first started college I strongly desired to help people. I thought the best way to help was to become a doctor. So true to form I completed every science class related to a pre-medicine course schedule. One science instructor built a relationship with me and challenged my thinking. “Why ‘fix’ people after the fact? Isn’t prevention and education a better form of help?” His simple act of inquiry sent my world into a spin. Perhaps my goal of medical school was too hasty and out of ignorance? Perhaps it was arrogance and position that drew me? Pride can blind you to itself. It was in this time of distress that developed my philosophy of teaching – inquiry, action, reflection. For the betterment
In the last year I’ve come across many lessons learned but there has been a single overall lesson that has had a substantial effect on my life. A lot of times, a lesson may go in one ear and out the other, but once one sticks it is often that it will be carried along with us all throughout our lives. With that being said, it is my senior year of high school and if I were to narrow the lessons I’ve learned down to the most important I would definitely choose the one that tugs on my heart the most. Toxic relationships are real and it is okay to remove them from your life.
