Survival Essay Survival, a life or death situation, one wrong move and you could die. It’s hard to remain calm in these situations, but some can do it. Lee had to escape from North Korea, Ralston was trapped alone under a rock, and Rainsford was being hunted alive, they survived from three things. It took Lee’s courage, Ralston’s Endurance, and Rainsford’s Intelligence to show they were survivors. First, Lee needed courage in order to go against the rules of her country and escape. People who left North Korea and was deported back were often killed. Lee went against these risks, just to live a better life. As shown in paragraph 7 “North Korean refugees in China are considered as illegal migrants.” “I would be repatriated… back in North Korea.”
This shows how scared she is while doing this, though her courage pushed her through. She ended up escaping, coming back, and escaping again with her family. As shown, all this courage is what gave her the extra boost in order to risk her life, for a better life. Aron Ralston had to endure through both physical and mental pain. Aron’s hand was crushed between a rock and a wall, that was physical pain happening. Though his brain also started to wear down, he started becoming insane and he hallucinated. As shown in paragraph 40 and 41 it says “The boy happily perches on my left shoulder as I steady him with my left hand and right stump… now I believe I will live.” This shows that he was hallucinating, but this hallucinating gave him the extra boost to survive. In the hallucination he was missing a hand, which is ironic as he escaped by cutting off his hand. The fact that he cut off his hand, showed how much he had to endure to get to the point of losing a hand just to get out. Rainsford showed his intelligence by setting traps and tricking General Zaroff. On page 23, line 675 it said, “Rainsford set a trap to kill Zaroff, but it killed Ivan.”
Shin Dong-hyuk was born in a labor camp, more specifically known as Camp 14. In this camp, Shin was considered to be living “below the law” (3) because of his father’s brother’s crimes. In this camp, Shin went through things many people couldn’t even fathom. He survived on his own. His mother would beat him, his father ignored him, and he trusted no one. “Before he learned anything else, Shin learned to survive by snitching on all of them.” (3). In this camp, the word “family” did not exist. All of this sounds horrific to many people living outside of North Korea, but that’s just the beginning of it. His life became increasingly worse when his mother and brother made the decision to try and escape the camp. On April 5, 1996, Shins older brother, He Guen, came home. As He Guen was talking to Shin’s mother, he overheard that “his brother was in trouble a...
John is in the ready position, waiting for the referee to shoot the gun in the air. He hears the gun go off and sprints down the track. He keeps his pace right behind the person in the lead. John sees that the person in front of him is getting tired, so he runs with all his might and takes the lead. But he was running too fast and suddenly his left foot hit the front of his right foot. He falls and slams onto the ground and all the racers pass him. His leg is scrapped badly, but John shows courage and gets up. He runs all the way to the finish line even though all racers are already at the finish line. He showed courage, courage that is trying even though failure is inevitable. Harper Lee and Mark Mathabane exhibit this courage throughout their books To Kill a Mockingbird and Kaffir Boy. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee shows courage through Atticus when he takes up Lee and Mathabane illustrate that courage is defined as people who put effort to achieve something even though failure is likely.
Shin Dong-Hyuk was born a prisoner in Camp 14, a long established North Korean labor camp. The author, a writer who has set up a series of interviews with Shin to reveal his life story and his incredible status as the only person born in a North Korean labor camp to escape. He grew up learning to snitch on his friends and family would earn him food in an environment where almost everyone was always starving. His parents were chosen because of their “good behavior” in the camp to get married and have children; they could only see each other five days per year. Common camp activities included: executions for those who tried to escape, beatings for anyone caught stealing food or misbehaving, and prisoners disappearing if they tried to speak out against the leaders of the camp. Shin learned quickly to keep his head down, food being his only motivation, if he was going to survive this living hell.
How would one react if they were placed in a situation, and they had to save themselves in a matter of seconds? Could they do it? Or would they be too late and suffer the consequences? Many conflicts Rainsford faces throughout the story are life and death situations. Rainsford is able to tackle each and every crisis because he exemplifies his quick thinking and ability to do things right the first time they happen. When a seconds delay means instant death, Rainsford utilizes his fast-acting reflexes to make complicated traps with General Zaroff right on his tail. His instinctive decisions he makes right on the spot are part of the reason as to why Rainsford can be called a survivor. Even when, “throwing off his sack of food,” Rainsford is still self-assured and uses his skills and smarts to help him journey through the rest of the game (page 70).
In the introduction, the author has done a good job engaging the audience with emotions, and painting a vivid scene of the seals being slaughtered. This essay does a good job of acknowledging the other point of views. This essay also has a good, clear sense of structure. The author has a strong thesis statement, that gave a clear indication of what the following paragraphs are about.
personal danger. It is very difficult for Scout to see that greater courage is often required
Today when we think of courage we relate it to a vigorous person who saves innocent people from fiery building, but even though it might not be obvious, acts of courage are performed all around you everyday. When My Name was Keoko, by Linda Sue Park is about a girl named Sun-hee whose life was changed when the Japanese invaded her home country of Korea during World War II. When the Japanese took over Korea, they changed every aspect of the Korean culture from what food they eat for dinner to what plants they can grow in their gardens. Sun-Hee and her family were not going to back down by the minatory rules of the Japanese government and decided to stand up for their rights in every way possible. Throughout the book every member of the Kim family preformed contumacious acts that are penalized with severe treatments or a beating and jail time if caught. Furthermore, even though you may not realize it, courage is being shown all the time throughout the book When My Name was Keoko.
Many students who are enrolled in FFA are already heading in the right direction to a bright future. FFA has many career benefits within the program. Any of the career development events (CDE’s) have something that will tie to a career in agriculture or to a career of other sorts. According to the National FFA Organization, “FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on real-world agricultural skills”(“Statistics”). There are so many careers that tie into FFA, and many of them have to do with agriculture. Not every career that has to do with agriculture is about farming. There are so many different aspects of the agriculture industry that many people never think twice about. Most people are not interested in agriculture because they think it is just about farming or
Football is a dangerous sport, in fact, retired NFL players are 19 time more likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease of any other similar memory loss diseases, found by a recent study by the university of Michigan. CTE a disease that Acura as a result of constant head injuries and contact, and has been growing rapidly in the NFL. The NFL has been denied giving the many claims that CTE has a direct connection with professional football, until recently. The NFL has been taken to court multiple times over the topic of CTE. Although the National Football League is preparing to settle a class-action lawsuit with players with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the League should do more for players because not only has it profited from
The definition of grit is simple; it means being passionate about long term goals, and showing stamina to pursue them, but should students in public schools have a class dedicated to a grit-focused curriculum? This has become a major topic of discussion among teachers and mentors. Angela Duckworth, a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, claims grit is not a fixed quality but one that can be developed. Many disagree with her statement. Grit is something everyone all have within themselves, but some just do not utilize this characteristic as often or as well as others. Grit is a puzzling concept. Duckworth has had an obsession with grit for over a decade. Her obsession started when she visited West Point,
Former VSU President William McKinney adjusted the academic calendar by reinstating Fall Break and eliminating Dead Day. He knew that the constant debate of whether or not to have the two items had been prolonged enough. Dr. McKinney said he believed that his decision “serves the best interest of most Valdosta State students, faculty, and staff” (Edwards, “Dead Day Gone”). While the elimination of Dead Day should have benefited everyone the students didn’t benefit as much as the teachers, so Dead Day should be reinstated to allow students an extra day before finals to study and relax.

Life support is an issue that is very controversial, people on both side have strong opinions. Life support is the treatment and technique that is usually performed in a critical care, in order to support life after a failure of one or more vital organs. Life support is used temporarily until the illness or the disease is stabilized and body can function normally on its own. I strongly disagree the use of life support in brain dead patients. I against life support with brain dead patients, because of the prolonging pain and suffering. I know it is hard to see a love one’s go, but life support is not the right decision. When people talk about life support, they basically mean ventilation.
Should you die, the primary reason for buying life insurance is generally to protect your loved ones financially. But in certain instances, you may also take out a loan through your coverage while you are still alive.
Writing is like showing magic tricks to me because the audiences don’t know what will happen. As a freshmen coming to college, something that I have to get used to that no one will inform me if I didn’t do my homework, or I skipped class. I didn’t expect much from any of my classes. In the beginning of the quarter my main goal for EWRT 211 is that I wanted to learn how to write better. Most of the essays I wrote in high school didn’t receive high scores. In EWRT 211 I learned many things, but the most important thing that I learned was how to write essays. Writing essays is not something that you can do in one day. You have to go through many steps to get the result that you want. For instance, in order to get a high score for your essay you shouldn’t write the essay the night before it is due. For example, before you start to write your essay you should plan out what is the main point
