We walked into the school grabbing our cases from the truck and the buses. I walked into the building with the rest of the band. Moments have passed before it was our time to go on stage. My heart was pounding and it felt like my legs would give out any second. We went out in front of the audience, standing in front of our seats waiting for our cue to sit down. A few moments later we started our first song. It went as great as could have. Now it was time for “The Witch and the Saint”. It was time to play the piece that I’ve been waiting on since we received it. It’s time. All of our hard work was about to pay off. This was our time to shine. It was our time to show everyone that we aren’t just an opening act to symphonic band. Our band was
When one evokes The Salem Witch Trials of 1692, the image that comes to most peoples minds are that of witches with pointed hats riding broomsticks. This is not helped by the current town of Salem, Massachusetts, which profits from the hundreds of thousands of tourists a year by mythologizing the trials and those who were participants. While there have been countless books, papers, essays, and dissertations done on this subject, there never seems to be a shortage in curiosity from historians on these events. Thus, we have Bernard Rosenthal's book, Salem Story: Reading the Witch Trials of 1692, another entry in the historiographical landscape of the Salem Witch Trials. This book, however, is different from most that precede it in that it does not focus on one single aspect, character, or event; rather Rosenthal tells the story of Salem in 1692 as a narrative, piecing together information principally from primary documents, while commenting on others ideas and assessments. By doing so, the audience sees that there is much more to the individual stories within the trials, and chips away at the mythology that has pervaded the subject since its happening. Instead of a typical thesis, Rosenthal writes the book as he sees the events fold out through the primary documents, so the book becomes more of an account of what happened according to primary sources in 1692 rather than a retelling under a new light.
In Rosalyn Schanzer’s Witches! The Absolutely True Disaster in Salem, the author discusses how the Salem Witch trials started and how the Puritans believed the witches should be tortured or killed for being a witch. Many people were accused of being witches. Many people thought the accused should die but some were somewhat nice and didn’t think they should die just in prison. Every puritan believed them because the dad was a reverend and everyone believed him so they all accused people. The causes of the Salem Witch Trials were disease, revenge, and attention.
On Tuesday, October 17, 2017, I attended a musical concert. This was the first time I had ever been to a concert and did not play. The concert was not what I expected. I assumed I was going to a symphony that featured a soloist clarinet; however, upon arrival I quickly realized that my previous assumptions were false. My experience was sort of a rollercoaster. One minute I was down and almost asleep; next I was laughing; then I was up and intrigued.
George Helmholtz, as the head of the music department at Lincoln High School, is very determined with his regular students and the gifted musicians of the band. Each semester and year at school he dreams of “leading as fine a band as there was on the face of the earth. And each year it came true”. His certainty that it was true was because he believed there was no greater dream than his. His students were just as confident and in response, they played their hearts out for them. Even the students with “no talent played on guts alone” for Helmholtz.
March 12, 1692 I was working in the scorching fields helping my father get through life harvesting row after row of corn and other vegetables planted throughout our farmhouse because he broke his leg while on horseback. Its been a month since the Salem Witch Trials began and just a week ago I heard that Rebecca Nurse who owned a popular bakery was accused and executed recently because she had been practicing witchcraft.
In life, empty, forsaken, lonely people in dire need of help put their faith toward God or a significant individual. A current example includes the 10 year old boy released by his kidnapper after singing a gospel song for hours. In Mark Twain’s The Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, Joan Arc, a teenage French military commander shows faith whenever she goes to battle or is about to face death. Eventually she gets captured and even though she will die she continues to keep her faith in God. By showing the effects of faith on Joan of Arc and her comrades, Mark Twain illustrates his belief that the value of an intense personal faith is important in everyone’s life.
Life in the “Dark Ages” was unimaginably rough and horrendous for the people in Europe. Men, woman, children, and animals were cursed with diseases, plagues, and war. It is known that the most people would bathe was once a year if, they could. The Medieval Period sounds bad, and it was very but, good things also came out of that period that we still use today. While the poor and needy suffered plagues, the rich laughed and dined while drinking their wine. The life span for women was at most 24 years to live due to sickness and lifestyle of un-nourishment. When Rome fell, so did Catholicism. People thought that Christianity couldn’t have different types of Christianity. For example: Mormons, Lutheran’s, and Baptist’s. It was either you are a Christian or you aren’t a Christian at all. Many people died for believing in something as simple as believing that the Earth was round and not flat, for believing that you should eat or act a certain way. The lifestyle and morals of the British were so ruined and mixed up that they believed that prostitution and adultery was O.K or normal. In the beginning when confusion was striking at every doorstep, the Church made Christians pay money in order for them to hear their sins, and absolve them.
Many girls of different ages fantasize about the perfect wedding, perfect husband, a gorgeous dress, and the happiness to come after the wedding. At one point I was just like these girls. I saw marriage as a paradise that everybody should experience. Around tenth- grade, my rose tinted glasses were removed and I witnessed just how bad a marriage could get to the point of divorce. The divorce my parents went through, changed my entire view on monogamy. I now see marriage in a more realistic point of view and that it is not an easy journey as I once had thought it was.
Since the beginning of civilization, humans have always wanted a way to explain the unexplained, we invented magical creatures and spirits because it gave us someway to grasp things that made no sense to us. Unexplained occurrences in the world have not always been considered inherently bad, in fact a long time ago people viewed supernatural instances as holy things. They worshipped them, things like the stars and the sun did not make sense to people so they assumed that they were the creation of the gods. As stated by Jasmine W. the ancient laws prohibiting magic really only focused on the effects of the magic rather than the magic itself. If the practice of magic resulted in something bad, then the conjurer would be held responsible but the general
Adults all seem to love Christmas plays. Whether it’s the same old generic style or a comedy, they all enjoy the holiday season. However, most people don’t realize the torture of being the lead character. From hours of line study, to the embarrassment of wearing that horrible costume, to the agony of song motions. They all leave a lasting effect on your life. One of the most memorable plays I was in, for many reasons, was A Christmas Ho-Down.
I stood up, as the loud vibrations of the church bells seem to touch my heart. I crossed the long, seemingly endless stream of soft healthy green grass to the black box, which lay just as I had left it in its own solitude. Inside of it lay the violin in which I had devoted a lot of my middle school life to. I had spent many hours practicing on this wooden contraption. Now all of my hard work, all of my hours practicing, would go into making this one piece sound amazing, spectacular, and memorable. This wasn’t something I was doing for myself. This was something I was doing for my family, friends, and most importantly the sweet, cherished soul of my dearly departed grandmother. I wanted there to be one last remarkable token of my love for someone who had made such a large impact on my life. I knew that my grandmother had absolutely loved the fact that I play a violin. She had always said that I held so much talent.
There was once a little girl named Sophia who was very stubborn and who never obeyed when her elders spoke to her. Her elders told her not to go trick or treating since there was a witch haunting the neighborhood. Knowing about the old witch, sophia demands to see her while trick or treating. People say she is a wonderful old woman, and has many marvellous things in her house, and that Sophia is very curious to see the witch.”
The hope she had, was helping her to cope with trauma she was going through. When she was 12 years old her father left them. She still remembers that day so clearly. They were so happy; they knew he will never come back. He never did. However, her happiness did not take long. Her single mother begun looking for a man. She started bringing her dates home. She could not be without a man. There were always random men in and out of their house and few lived with them. Grace called them faceless and nameless men. Those faceless men often were trying to molest Grace and her sister. The girls were trying to explain to their mother what was happening, but she did not listen and she could not believe them. Regardless of the reason, Grace’s mother was
The rest of the night had gone so fast, but whenever our instructor, Miles, signaled to us that it was our turn, the next few seconds felt like an eternity. Guitar over my shoulder, I started to walk towards the ramp that lead up to the stage. In front of me was a giant mob of people that resembled a forest with trees so high and thick throughout that you couldn’t see the other side. We started to plod through the crowd. My shoes became heavy chains, dragging me down as I attempted to move forward.
When I was still in elementary school, still at the awkward age of 11 years, my best friend loved witchcraft. Which meant by default I also liked witchcraft. Everyday we would hop into her mother’s van and arrive at her home. From there we would lock ourselves away from the world and immerse ourselves in learning what it took to be a witch.
