1. The voting game was interesting, and it was an analogy to real life situations. Initially I was confused and really did not understand the game. At first I assumed that if I voted the number 1 I would not receive any money, and if I voted the number 0, I would receive money. I was thinking this was a tricky game, and everyone would vote 0 because if they voted 1 they wouldn’t receive any money. I was wrong. Only fifteen students voted for the number 0: the rest voted for the number 1. I received $30,000 while the people who voted the number 1 received $38,000, $8,000 more! I then understood the game and how I should vote, but then a classmate pleaded his case and hoped everyone would vote 0, so the money we received would increase and we …show more content…
would all get an equal amount. Then we were asked to vote again with our eyes closed. Everyone voted 0 except one student. That was reality. There will always be a greedy person that will take the chance to make more money if given the opportunity. 2. For the people who voted 0, I believe our intentions were the same. We were trying to work together so we would all receive an equal and high amount of money. For those who voted the number 1, my vote gave them $8,000 more of a profit. They became richer because of my decision and of those who voted 0. 3. Firstly, voting your true intention isn’t just an ethical question, it’s a practical one. Voting ceases to have meaning if a large number of people do not vote for their primary preference, but vote to block other outcomes. As Jonathan Haidt states in an article interview, “the ethics of voting depends on which view of voting you possess. Many people treat voting as a strategic game, a way in which people are trying to realistically pursue either their self-interest or their moral goals.” Those who voted 1 took the opportunity to make more money. It is not unethical, just greedy in my opinion. 4. I believe that members of society have a choice to take actions that impose a cost on others. It all comes down to your personal goals and how you want to achieve them. Will you want to achieve your goals and not consider who you may hurt or affect in the process? I would hope and believe that members of society should take others into consideration before taking action on any decision. If their decision harms others or affects their livelihood, I would hope they would reconsider their actions. 5. I wish that other participants would have voted 0 so we all get an equally large sum of money. I like to believe we all had the same moral intentions of sticking together and receiving an equal outcome, but that was not the case. People who voted the number 1 voted with their self-interest in mind. Trying to decide which other people are voting for, then strategically casting your vote appropriately, makes the error of assuming that your vote is independent of other people’s votes. But other people are going through similar thought processes you are. So other people’s votes are correlated with yours. That’s not to say that by the way you vote you cause them to vote that way, just that starting from the assumption that their votes are mostly fixed while yours is not is a considerable error. Others picked 1 because there is a larger payout. The amount of money we all earn depends on how many people vote 0. Students think it is a risk they are willing to take because there is a larger reward. Even if only one person votes 0, they will still make more of a profit than voting 0 themselves. 6.
I would hope that everyone behaves as we wish others to behave, because it shows you have integrity. Self-interest is not unethical; if you do not behave as we wish others to behave that is your personal choice and based on your ethical values. Many would think of “The Golden Rule”. However, it is easier to tell others to live by this rule than to actually put this rule into action. According to a newsletter written by William Scott Green, called Parsing Reciprocity: Questions for the Golden Rule, “The Golden Rule is easier to endorse than to enact. As a general moral principle or as an abstract statement of ethical value, the Golden Rule makes intuitive sense and enjoys wide acceptance across religions and cultures. But the generality and abstraction that enable its broad appeal make the Golden Rule problematic as a directive for practical action. Indeed, on Gert’s analysis, it is possible that the Golden Rule must be read figuratively or very expansively in order to be used, surely a challenge for any basic moral principle. The Golden Rule can be accepted unambiguously but applied only after considerable reflection and qualification.” After reading this article, it confirms to me that it is easier to tell others to behave as we wish others to behave than to actually do it. People will live by “The Golden Rule” only if they choose to in certain situations. My answer to this question does not conflict with my answer to question
3. 7. Individuals do not have the duty to sacrifice for the sake of others because it could affect them or their life in a negative way. We all have a free will. If you choose to sacrifice for the sake of others, it would be your own choice. However, when the cost outweighs the reward, you should take others into consideration. For example, as mentioned in our textbook, “…people are concerned about the well-being of others and possess a conscience. These psychological mechanisms restrain people from exercising their liberty in a manner that harms others.” It is important to consider how our actions and decisions could affect other people’s lives.
Adam Smith’s moral theory explains that there is an “impartial spectator” inside each of us that aids in determining what is morally and universally good, using our personal experiences and human commonalities. In order to judge our own actions, we judge and observe the actions of others, at the same time observing their judgments of us. Our impartial spectator efficiently allows us to take on two perceptions at once: one is our own, determined by self-interest, and the other is an imaginary observer. This paper will analyze the impartiality of the impartial spectator, by analyzing how humans are motivated by self-interest.

The idea of each person ought to pursue his or her own self -interest exclusively to do in his life time for others is known as Ethical Egoism.
My beliefs are important to me. I wake up every morning with a cup of coffee in my hand and turn on the daily news. I see many problems occurring around the world, but most of us are too blind to actually do something to help. We are too blinded by our society's cultural that we can’t separate ourselves from the good and bad.
Every day, in a plethora of different situations, virtually every person has to make a multitude of decisions regarding how to interact with other people. Despite many centuries of intense study and theorizing by some of the most brilliant philosophers in the world, there is no single consensus on how people should choose to act towards others. What have been developed, however, are different systems of ethics describing idealized ideas of how human beings should treat themselves, treat others, and what they should strive for both personally and for society as a whole. In addition, many people cobble together their own personal systems of ethics based on personal experience and various degrees of formal ethical education.
Many girls of different ages fantasize about the perfect wedding, perfect husband, a gorgeous dress, and the happiness to come after the wedding. At one point I was just like these girls. I saw marriage as a paradise that everybody should experience. Around tenth- grade, my rose tinted glasses were removed and I witnessed just how bad a marriage could get to the point of divorce. The divorce my parents went through, changed my entire view on monogamy. I now see marriage in a more realistic point of view and that it is not an easy journey as I once had thought it was.
Personal Narrative: The World The world is a messed up place and we are all stuck here until our lives are through, or until we choose to leave. It's strange that I go along with everything everyone tells me, such as that I should wear certain clothes or listen to certain songs. I often wonder why I do the things I do, but then I just realize that's who I am. People are confused about why they are here, and they don't understand what life is supposed to be about.
The air hung around them, tensed and quiet. The fragility of her emotion was threatening to shatter. It is as if that time stood still for her. She fingered the brim of her notebook, nervously and took notice of the cup of coffee on her side. Controlling the sudden urged to drown the caffeine all at once; she carefully picked the cup and warily sipped its content. It had long been cold, and her tongue appreciated that fact.
Identity-“Ones personal qualities.”Identiy is something only he or she can fully define. My uncle says I am affectionate, cheerful, and calm. My grandmother sees me as slim, pretty and sweet. My dad described me as perky, cheerful and happy, my mom says beautiful, gentle, and self-conscious. These adjectives describe me accurately, yet they are only abstract versions of me. Adjectives cannot begin to describe me and I aknowlege these descriptions for what they are, a condensed translation from my outward self to the world. It is impossible for anyone to understand me completely because nobody has experienced the things I have. My mother has never cherished a raggedy doll named Katie and my father never spent hours upon hours making collages and scrap books for his future children. My uncle never hid in the back of a pick-up-truck and traveled four hours to New York and my grandmother has never walked hours in the rain looking for the Queen of England. My identity is something only I can define.
Some people like to stay in control of their life and avoid any amount of extraordinary risk to protect their self-disclosure. Other people don’t shy away from challenges as they are confident that certain obstacles are nothing more than just another thing standing in their way from living life to the fullest extent. Through personal experience, I’ve realized that personal comfort is nothing more than a variety of fears that limit me from challenging myself.
The idea of perfection is a topic that I refuse to believe. Everyone is born with certain flaws that can be depicted throughout one’s life, these blemishes fall under the categorizations of strengths and weaknesses. Since there is always a way to get better, one must be able to identify their own personal benefits and drawbacks in order to better themselves. The person I am today is because I constantly looked for methods to improve myself. The future I am molding also consists of mending the little things about myself that still do not satisfy my personal goals and requirements.
Ethical Principles are concerned with good and bad behavior. Rules governing appropriate interpersonal behavior form the basis for human culture. Pro-social behaviors refer to actions that are intended to aid or benefit another person or group of people without persons anticipation of external rewards. Also known as the concept of Altruism.
Ethical standards that evolved over the history of Western civilization deal with interpersonal relationships. What is right or wrong? What one should do and not do when dealing with other people. Ethical behavior in a business environment has not been as clearly defined. When businesses were small and the property of a few individuals, traditional ethical standards were applied to meet different situations. However, as businesses became larger, the interpersonal ethical relations did not provide any clear behavioral guidelines. Likewise, the principles of ethical relationships were even less pertinent to the corporate environments.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. My father usually doesn’t make it his top priority to go to the doctors, so he waited about four weeks until he really didn’t feel good.
After reading these three different idealists you can insert the same rule into each theory. The Golden Rule is a very powerful ideal to live off of. When it comes to all of the social virtues if you can keep the Golden rule in the back of your head there is no possible way that you could not gather the virtues that you need. When it comes to making ethical decisions you always have to factor in what your actions are producing, you actions should always produce the good in your life as well as the lives of others. Friendliness, Truth, and trust are some of the basic virtues that you should posses if you want to be an ethical and socialable person.
