The day my father went to jail when I was a teenager is a day that I will never forget. The months that would follow this day made me who I am today. This event in my life is what truly opened my eyes and made me get accustomed to the real world. During his absence I got my first job. I would now have to provide for my mother and siblings since my father would not be able to for the time being. This lead me to trying my best in school, something I was never a big fan of. Throughout this whole ordeal I became to understand my purpose in life. I learned how to appreciate everything and everyone that I would come across. Throughout my childhood I never cared for school. I did okay and passed without any problems but I felt that maybe if I would put more effort into it I would do exceptionally better and that would bring my dad back home. I was in eighth grade during this time. One thing that I vastly improved on was my attendance. Even when I did not feel good I made sure that my butt was at school. Everyday I would come to school was fun to me now. Each day I would try to learn every single little thing about the topics we would be covering that day. I would ask question after question until I felt that the rest of the class was annoyed with me. I became to love decimals, percentages, vocabulary words, poems, chemical elements etc. Everyday I came to school I made a goal to learn at least two different things that I didn’t know the day prior. I was very proud of myself. I got my first job, school grades were great and because of it I learned various new things along the way. I learned how to always be on time no matter what the occasion is. That shows the respect you have for what you are doing. I learned how to help others at my first job which would translate into the things I do for people today. No matter the situation, I always put others before myself. It is wonderful thing being able to put a smile on someone’s face. I never know what they might be going through therefore I always try and make their day better even if it is a simple greeting . A year had passed when my dad finally came home. It filled me with joy knowing that my family was together as one once again. There weren’t any voids in my life anymore. My dad soon informed me that he had been in jail because he had been accused of being part of a robbery that left two people injured, but upon investigation his innocence was proven and he was released. My life changed drastically during the time that my dad was gone. I was saddened by thinking that he wouldn’t be there to see me grow up and witness who I would become as a person. I feel that this period of time in my life really helped me become a better person and an adult today although I’m still learning everyday.
