St. Philip’s Episcopal Church has not only been a source of faith, but an area that has given me the most satisfaction in my life. Becoming a Sunday School instructor, attending the “Safe Kids, Safe Church” Conference, and volunteering at events such as Souper Bowl Sunday and BLAST Biblical Learning Camp have all brought me immense happiness. It is with great pride that I am able to donate my time in an arena that has made such a significant contribution to my character. In my first year of high school, my Sunday School teacher suggested that I had the skills to become an instructor and nursery care leader, which I still continue today. My roles in the church have taught me to quickly explain lessons to children in relation to what they understand.

After seeing though the eyes of my pastor I’ve come to realize the importance of faith and committing to one’s beliefs. Returning to church after two massive losses has helped my mother in many ways and it has also taught me as a young man how small things that I could do would turn to have a big impact on someone’s life the same way my pastor impacted my life and the life of my siblings.

I spent two years working on a literary magazine and newsletter, and proved myself enough to grab a higher position my second year. Helping others perform to their fullest with my help is extraordinarily rewarding. These qualities reflected on the two years I spent regularly babysitting after school and on call. Babysitting not only helped me develop my leadership and role model traits, it was also gratifying to know that because I dedicated myself, I was making the lives of parents
I have had several wonderful opportunities to work with children. At my school I enjoyed helping teach a young children's music class by playing songs for them, telling them about the violin, and helping them develop a love of beautiful music. I would enjoy continuing this as an adult. Last year I helped a kindergarten teacher in an underprivileged school, stapling papers and supervising children. I most enjoyed helping small groups learn the alphabet, supervising two children at a time as they tried to match the capital and lowercase letters and identify each letter.
My desire to be a role model to the youth in my church and spread God's word have provided for different leadership roles. Walking down Golden Gate Avenue, I felt the cold San Francisco air hit me as I stepped into the Tenderloin for one of the first times in my life. I noticed groups of homeless people huddled in tents and sleeping bags as far as the eye could see. Up to this point, all of my preconceived notions about this area of the city seemed true, the drug paraphernalia, the homeless people, and the surplus of liquor stores. By walking into the front doors at St. Anthony’s Dining Room, I would never look at that neighborhood with the same condescending attitude.
My involvement in the life of Epiphany Lutheran Church is different than most others. I started attending our church when I was a child. I attended Sunday school every week with my grandmom. I remember being excited to go every week and I always had a lot of fun. I attended church regularly up until I was around ten years old. Since my parents were getting a divorce, it made going regularly difficult. I usually went with my dad and grandmom, but until the divorce was finalized I did not see them as much as I used to. Once, I started seeing my dad weekly again, I visited him two days during the school week. By the time, the weekend and Sunday occurred, I was with my mom again. She was not as actively involved in the church as much and preferred
Perhaps the most important experience during my more formative years was my experience with YMCA camping. I was a camper, counselor, summer camp administrative staff, year-round professional and Camp Executive. I first learned of the satisfaction enjoyed when you help others find self-confidence and success. These years led me into teaching.
The voices of the choir danced through the church as I stood there in my button up, denim jeans, and dress shoes. My ten year old self would come to find myself in this very same get-up sunday after sunday listening to some old man preach about the actions people made a couple thousand years ago. Despite all the rambling I heard as a child I never absorbed any of what my pastors were spewing out of their mouths. As I grew older i began participating in things such as youth group as expected by me from my peers and parents.
Being the youth leader and the church admin has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of people and manage them equally, also it involves me listening to them and given them confidence in whatever they are going through at the time, also
Through my own experiences, and as enforced by others' opinions in the profession, I have found that teaching is one of the most rewarding careers. Not only are you placed in the position of instructing and guiding children and young adults through the life long learning process, but you are able to give back to the schools and communities which have supported your early education and experiences that opened you up to a bright future. In becoming an educator, I hope to someday share the knowledge and lend the helping, supportive hand that I was once given, allowing students to formulate their own perspectives of the multicultural society and world around them. Teaching is a career I have been interested in pursuing throughout high school, and as my experiences and study in the field expands, I feel that my desire to teach will grow stronger and develop more soundly.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss a service that I got to attend that was different from my own religious tradition. I decided to go with my chosen topic because to be honest I had never experienced or thought to experience a different type of church service other than the one I grew up in. I grew up in a Christian home and attended a non-denominational Christian church on a regular basis. I just never felt the need to experience something that was different. So I decided to attend a mass at a Catholic church. I had been to weddings in a Catholic church and even funerals with a Catholic involvement but not an actual mass.
