Personal Narrative: My Experience Of Volunteering With Sanders Memorial Elementary School

With the year, soon to be closing to an end, I could not help but stop to reflect on past events where I gave back to the community that has given me so much. In between the summer of leaving Year 1 and entering Year 2, I got in contact with Sanders Memorial Elementary School, my previous elementary school, asking if I could come over a few days a week to volunteer. My request thrilled them because with the 2017-2018 school year quickly coming, there was a lot to get done in a limited amount of time, and they could use all the help they could get. Shortly beforehand, I also got in contact with my close friend to see if she would be interested in volunteering with me. She also replied with a yes, and little did I know, we got a lot more done together than I could ever do alone. …show more content…

The experience made me understand the hard work, time, and effort it took to open the folder, put the papers in, then a new year planner... one sounds easy sure, but continuing for 700 students, made it a lot more difficult. The papers would sometimes get too stuck together, or the copies were in Spanish, therefore resulting in going back and looking through the stack of 30 folders to find that 1 folder and fixing it, this could sometimes get me very annoyed or frustrated. In general, doing the same thing repeatedly, can make easy jobs, seem 20x harder. All in all, I learned it's easier to work with a purpose... or end goal in mind. When you’re working with purpose, gives yourself extra motivation to finish the task and do it
