My experience in community college was invaluable; I encountered many professors who inspired me to push myself harder and pursue higher education. These teachers helped me push myself into taking honors courses and applying to top-tier universities. Their passion for social justice through education was visible and made me want to become an educator myself. One day one of my favorite professors, Dr. Bernard, excitedly shared information with the class about the Los Angeles Team Mentoring (LATM) program. In this program, you can volunteer to mentor local at-risk middle school youth through small group activities centered on wellness, diversity, and development. “When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.” (Van Roeckel, 2008, p. 1) Deer Valley High School in Glendale, AZ is the first high school built in the Deer Valley Unified Scholl District, and with a population around 1800 students, the high school is one of the bigger schools in the state. It has a tradition of family on its’ campus, where there are still teachers teaching that were there when the school opened in 1980. A number of former students have become new teachers on campus and just about all the teachers’ children have attended and graduated from the campus. With a school like ours, there are many connections to the community around it and it is demonstrated by the programs that bring in parent and community to help with the development of our students. There are numerous booster clubs run on our campus to help support student achievement on the sports fields, a school to work programs to teach the students necessary skills in different areas of either nursing, sports medicine classes, and in the culinary arts classrooms, and funding to our school to help ensure all students graduate on time. There are many programs on our campus, but I will discuss four of the programs: baseball booster club, C2G program, “school-to-work”, and the special education program sponsored by Arrowhead Hospital. These programs are designed to improve the relationships between the campus and the people in the community, and give all students on campus every opportunity to succeed in their future.
1. During my membership with Junior League, I wish to acquire the skills needed to plan, organize and prioritize work for a variety of events and socials. I wish to enjoy my time networking and meeting other successful women within the Tampa community. By becoming a member of Junior League, I have an opportunity to develop myself further and build friendships through a supportive environment while making a positive impact on the community. I hope to inspire women to do what is right, guide them, and monitor their progress along the way. A future position in Junior League I could take on would be a provisional mentor to fulfill this hope of inspiring and guiding women. I would like to receive the skills and training to become a more effective community leader. I want to donate my time in the most effective way possible and I believe Junior League can offer me that. Through Junior League, I believe I can succeed in gaining these skills and experiences I wish to acquire.

For my Cultural Plunge, I participated with Project Excell (Extending College Education for Lifelong Learning). This is a group that meets on campus, in the union, every Saturday morning from 9:00-11:00 AM. Each participant has a developmental disability and they come from various places around Manhattan. Project Excell offers around 4 different classes for the participants to choose from, which range from dancing/theatre to the history of Nigeria. After completing a “session,” the participants go through a graduation ceremony and then begin a different type of class for the next few weeks. I joined this group as a student ambassador, who assists the classroom teachers while building relationships with and tending to the needs of the participants.

My transition to college was successful, but it was nonetheless one of the most stressful times in my life. Unlike many of my peers at Saint Louis University, my rural high school experience did not truly prepare me for the academic rigors of college. Despite extensive preparation, I performed rather poorly on the first round of exams. While I didn’t fail any particular exam, my performance was seriously lacking. I was fortunate to have a mother who was invested in my academic success and knew that education afforded a variety of opportunities especially for people who come from where I come from and look the way I do. Having to commute over an hour to receive quality education that was in the backyards of some of my classmates is a morbid analogy for what being a South Side Chicago student looks like and illuminates the realities of injustice and the possibilities for change on a global scale. How did a departmental faculty generated 12,000 hours of student community service in one semester? The following is a qualitative analysis of conversations with faculty members in a department that recently instituted a service learning requirement for all student majors. The campus is a large urban comprehensive university with a multi-ethnic student body. Approximately fifteen faculty members were interviewed for this study. While most of those interviewed included service learning components in their courses, interviews with faculty members who resisted or refused to incorporate service learning were conducted as well in order to understand varying faculty attitudes towards service learning.
After I graduate college, I want to give back to my community by partaking in a mentorship role for young people in my community. Through my involvement in cheerleading and my local 4-H program, my life has been largely affected by the mentors that I have had in these programs. My cheer coaches have always pushed me to be the best and my 4-H leaders have demonstrated the value of the hard work. Hello class! I am Sophia Sanchez, this is my second semester attending Cypress college. My intended major is Nursing, though it is subject to change due to other interests. I’m currently a full-time student. I’m hesitant whether I will earn my Associates Degree here at Cypress College or if I will transfer to Cal State Fullerton University for the remainder of my education. After graduation I plan to work as an Oncology nurse at Kaiser Permanente or CHOC. My time is spent studying, working, and attending church. I’m currently employed at an Urgent Care as a Medical Assistant; I love to interact with patients and help them with their needs. Taking time to volunteer at the many nonprofit organizations, homeless shelters, advocacy centers, philanthropic fundraisers, local schools and child care facilities in the inner city is not always at the forefront of young people’s minds while navigating through their college experiences. But, with a little push from student organizations, local nonprofits and passionate individuals, volunteerism and community change can start to take a front seat and become not just an opportunity, but also a priority in the lives of young people.
It took me eighteen years to realize what an extraordinary influence my mother has been on my life. She' s the kind of person who has thoughtful discussions about which artist she would most want to have her portrait painted by (Sargent), the kind of mother who always has time for her four children, and the kind of community leader who has a seat on the board of every major project to assist Washington' s impoverished citizens. Growing up with such a strong role model, I developed many of her enthusiasms. I not only came to love the excitement of learning simply for the sake of knowing something new, but I also came to understand the idea of giving back to the community in exchange for a new sense of life, love, and spirit.
My first year in college has been a rewarding experience. As I look back on my Why College, Why Now essay, I realize that I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about myself.
