August, a month that brings unbearable heat, uncontrollable sweating, and most importantly, competition. The pressing heat of August can really change a man, unless he has something to keep him busy. For me, it is football during the day, and fantasy football during the night. After a grueling day of practice, I can always come home to my phone, and open the ESPN fantasy football app. I have played fantasy football since eighth grade with some of my closest friends. We all treat it as a life or death game which allows us to bring out our competitive side. Now, have I won a championship in 5 years? The answer to that is not important. What is important is the recent argument my friend Jake and I have gotten ourselves into. Last fantasy season, …show more content…
I was facing a different friend James in the finals. I thought I had it in the bag. I was up by at least 30 points and the only player he had left to play was Julio Jones. I was not extremely familiar with Julio at the time, but putting up 30 points is a rarity.
Monday night football came around and we were watching it together. I was ready to call it a victory until the Falcons went for it on fourth down, and threw a 70 yard touchdown to Julio. I lost the finals by three points, and I will never forget that dooms day evening. This year, I was not going to make that mistake again. I drafted Julio first, and now I was loyal to him as a player. He had proven his worth to me, and holds a spot in my heart as the best receiver in the league, not only because of what happened last year, but because of his continued success. My other friend Jake asked me why I drafted Julio instead of Antonio Brown, a receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I told him that Julio was the better player, and a strong tension was formed right there on the spot. He drafted Antonio next, telling me that he was clearly the best receiver in the league. Since then we have been in a heated debate about who rightfully owns the number one spot. We constantly send stats back and forth, but obviously, a decision will not be made anytime soon. Now you might be asking, how can this relate to …show more content…
Theology. Well, my debate over who is the best receiver in the NFL relates to theology more than one would think. At the beginning of the year we talked about bias, and more recently about opinions. This could not fit more perfectly. I am not going to lie, I have some bias in the situation. That loss in my only fantasy football superbowl hurt, and there was no one to blame but Julio. After a while, I realized there was nothing I could do, and as the saying goes, “If you can’t beat them, join them”. Bias is particularly difficult for me and Jake overcome in this argument because I want to defend the man that did the impossible, and he wants to defend Antonio because he picks him every year in the fantasy football draft. This causes him to be bias towards Antonio Brown, and forces me to be bias towards Julio Jones. This is most certainly why we argue so much about this and become furious with one another because we are both so stubborn that we will not change our minds, no matter how much evidence is put in front of us. We have formulated our own opinions about each player, good and bad, and they are locked in, surrounded by a think layer of unbreakable bias. One of the most important things my friend and I take into account is statistics. Not only onces for Julio and Antonio, but for their quarterbacks, and teams as a whole. We both know it is impossible to fully appreciate the skill of a player without first looking at several stats. For example, what team do they play for, who is their quarterback and offensive line, who do they play against throughout the season, and even what the weather was like that week. For me, how well a player performs throughout the year is contingent on all of things listed above. A good quarterback on a sunny day with no rain against the Cleveland Browns will most definitely effect how well a receiver performs. This is why our conversation never stops, we can just keep bringing up more and more stats that spiral into a never ending debate. For example, Julio Jones put up a record breaking 52 fantasy points against the 4-8 Carolina Panthers. The Panthers no longer have a stout defense like the 2015 season, and can clearly not cover Julio Jones. Antonio brown only put up 15 points against the 0-12 Browns. But, this type of argument is not complete, because the roles can be reversed, proving that there are many other things that can influence a player's performance. How Julio and Brown preform is contingent on so many things that at some point, we have put aside all these facts, and just look at total points scored over the entire season. Right now, Julio is ranked 3rd behinds Mike Evans and Antonio Brown, but I am confident that Julio will reclaim his #1 spot that held up until week 7. In unit two we talked about religious world views. These are ways in which people can look at religion, both their own and others’. The three main views are inclusivism, exclusivism, and pluralism. Pluralism does not really apply to the this situation, but surprisingly inclusivism and exclusivism can be related to my debate quite easily. In this situation, I can say I have a inclusivism approach on whether Julio Jones or Antonio Brown is better. I think that Julio is the best receiver hands down, but I recognize Antonio Brown’s talent, just not as much as Julio’s. If I were to say that I was looking through the lens of exclusivism, that would mean that I do not realize or even acknowledge how talented Brown is as a player, which is false. It is kinda crazy how a debate like this can be related to how people see and view religion. In the end, when it comes down to it, this is all just trivia.
It does not matter who is better, and I hope both of us will be over it eventually. Yes, it is extremely important right now because we both want to prove we are right, but it won’t effect anything in the future. Our debate has traveled to unimaginable depths, and will probably continue until college. I wrote about this because it is something that I care about deeply. Do not ask me why I care about fantasy football so much, because I can not give you an answer. Maybe it is because of my competitive spirit, or my love for the game of football in general. Do I think Julio is the better receiver? In my opinion, and because of slight bias, I do, although I have hours of evidence ready to back up my decision. This is what makes my opinion valid. Opinions are only a good as the evidence to support them, and I have one heck of a stack of evidence. All the possible stats that could effect a player come into play, and a player's performance is contingent on those
stats.
Playing football comes with several risks factors that players’ acknowledge prior to playing the game starting a young age. Regardless, these players still chose to play the game, which they end up loving and cherishing despite all the risks accompanied with it. Football is one of the toughest sports in the world; it takes a certain amount of strength, speed, and aggressiveness to play 48 minutes of hard-nosed football. However, the National Football League (NFL) is in the midst of a controversial issue. Is the NFL getting soft? This has been a debatable issue for several years. While some believe that implementing all these rules in the NFL is progressively turning the game soft, others say that the NFL is not getting soft; it is just trying to make the game safer for its players.
Fantasy football is all based on the National Football League. All the players on a fantasy football participant’s team, play in the NFL. The teams in the NFL play once a week and there are sixteen weeks in the season. Each week, there are head to head matchups and you win based on the performance
American Football is a huge spectator sport where offensive and defensive players will use teamwork and perseverance to try and score more points than their opponent. Football is highly respected in America, where boys will try and pursue the dream of playing in the NFL (National Football Association) someday; but if you look at an average neighborhood, you will find that kids and adults of all ages love to go out and throw around the pigskin. (Lerner and Lerner 275). One thing Americans will take pride in is the college and NFL football teams they root for. People sit down with a beer and talk hours upon hours of football and two individuals can get in a heated discussion in the local sports store of whose sports team is better. Surprisingly enough, one will find the most passionate football players at the high school level. Most boys will start their football career as a young child in football programs such as Pop Warner to get a foothold and to get those involved in teamwork and friendships. These programs are usually the start to someone falling in love with the sport and making it a career choice eight years later. Football is one of America’s favorite sports. When fall season comes around, people across America are placing bets, finding out where that new sports bar is, and buying wide screen T.V’s to watch NFL on Sundays. After their team plays, they will go out and reminisce what happened that Sunday. While thousands of fans are still pumped from the NFL games they watched; small towns across America are getting ready to shut down their shops and restaurants to have the chance to make it to the local high schools football game. Ray Glier, a reporter for the New York Times, writes about football in the small town of Appala...
For years, the debate over who the most productive fantasy players were in a given era was fixated on the top-rated running backs. With a gradual change in play calling philosophies, that trend has shifted dramatically since 2010. Such a dramatic shift - that now getting a top tier wide receiver is a higher draft priority than stocking up on ball carriers. However, since 2010 a few NFL fantasy superstars have been consistently the best point producers.
Football is a game of adversity and emotion. People who have not played a sport or follow one closely don’t understand the emotion behind game. They think that football is just a game, but for those who are involved with the team don’t think so. All those horrendous hours of countless preparation are for something players and coaches love. About a few years ago, a football player at the collegiate level was told that he wouldn’t be able to play another down of football again due to his banged up h...
Before the start of the game I was told to guard their best receiver because nobody else could keep up with him. Even though i was fast, I was definitely not as fast as him. He was like lightning, speeding past me and making quick, subtle turns that were hard to predict. I was so tired from guarding him all game that by the end of the first half I felt like collapsing. When they hiked the ball, I made sure that I tried my best to stop him from getting the ball. Without failing to surprise me, he predicted my next move and feinted left and then turning right. I fell for the trick, and his quarterback threw the ball to him. He caught it and started running down the field. I sprinted after him. I put the rest of my energy into this run. As I got closer and closer to him, an idea formed in my head. When I got close enough I would dive for his flag, hoping to pull it before he reached the end zone. It was not a very intelligent idea, but it could’ve worked. When I was almost touching him, I dove. I missed the flag by millimeters. As I hit the ground I heard a loud ‘POP’ in my shoulder. Instantly I knew that I had broken a
I loved everything about the sport, knew everything about the sport, and simply wanted to be physically involved with the sport. I signed up for my local football organization and greatly anticipated the start of the season. My first season our team finished undefeated, winning each game with ease. I played offensive line and enjoyed every play, finally being a part of the sport I loved. My coach at the time admired my hard work and dedication, repeatedly telling my fellow teammates that we should all aspire to have a work ethic such as my own. At the end of the season, my coach suggested I practice to become a quarterback. A quarterback is usually one of the skinniest players on the team, a trait I certainly didn't have. If I were to be a quarterback, I would have to lose at least thirty pounds and practice almost every day until the next season. As crazy as the suggestion seemed to me at the time, I gladly accepted the challenge and almost instantly began to work to become the best quarterback I could
In 2014 I was determined to make the high school soccer team. Every day at 8 am at the beginning of a dreadfully hot August morning, I would get to the turf fields for 4 hours and participate in “hell week”. After a long week, I made the JV team. I was never put into the game and felt like my hard work was put to no use. My sophomore year rolled around and I tried extra hard to impress the coaches. Anything and everything was a competition to make it to the top. By the end of the week, we all gathered around the paper that had names of the players who made it. I didn’t make the team. After tears and telling myself to move on, I went to the field hockey tryouts. I knew nothing about the sport and was terrified that soccer wasn’t my go-to
Sports play a very important role in my life ever since I could walk. My interests in playing sports began at the age of three as my parents signed me up for soccer, flag football, basketball, and lacrosse. First grade started my competitive edge as I began to play for travel teams in various sport tournaments. This competitive edge transferred from the sports field to the classroom having teachers and coaches helping me be the best I can be. Sports have continually well-shaped and defined my character by teaching me how to accept a win from working hard, also how a loss is an opportunity to learn and fix mistakes.
When I was beginning high school as a freshman, I searched for an activity that I could participate in. I was looking to meet new people and hoping to be accepted by other students. I was willing to do anything for their acceptance. At the beginning of the school year a football meeting was announced, although I had never played football before, I decided to attend the meeting. From the day of that initial meeting, I will be in love with the game for the rest of my life. I learned of the consequences involved with participating in a full contact sport such as football. Many people ask if football is worth the risk for high school athletes. I decided that for me the benefits outweigh the risks.
Christopher Delgado, claims in "The Culture of Denial"(2015), that since the start of human advancement through scientific discoveries and inventions, there has been a hindrance which is the denial of proven truth. Delgado poses a question and answers it in order to clearly state his stand on the topic which is that the culture of denial is fueled by beliefs, ignorance, and personal agendas. He poses questions and sentences that cause the reader to think about the topic for themselves. There's also a use of examples, and statistics to solidify his argument. The paper is concluded with a call to action and gives a sense of urgency by taking a "we" approach to make the reader feel as though they are on he same side.

As a fan playing Madden football as your favorite player can be one of the most exhilarating things you can do . When I think of fantasy football I think of rooting for a player that 's not from the home team to help you defeat a friend. NFL players may be rich and famous. But during life only a few people have such issues as concussions, losing a million dollars all before the age of 45. Pro football is it really as good as a fan thinks. I think that as a fan there may be more then what meets the eye for NFL
At the beginning of the game they punted the ball to my team. As I made my way down the field to block I turned around and was blindsided. I was swept off my feet and saw blood flying in the air, from my nose. I felt like life was going in slow motion as I was in the air. I heard the opposing coach tell his player that is what he wanted. I felt broken cause I knew the whole game they were out for my head. We had been losing for most of the game, but we had began to make our way back. We were playing good defense and my cousin was their quarterback, and we both had a lot of family at the game cheering us on. He had a breakaway run and was on his way to score, but me being so competitive I ran him down and tackled him. I had hit him out of bounds at the ten yard line. His team was furious that I had stopped him from scoring. On the next play two of their players had hit me high and low. As I want down there was a crowd of their players around me. As I began to get up their biggest player stepped on my knee and pushed down as hard as he could. I had a sharp pain go through my leg, and as I tried to get up I could not put any weight on my leg. I hobbled around and played the next play and called a timeout. I tried to walk off the field and I took a few steps and fell to the ground. My best friends dad, Tony, came over and helped me off the field. My mom knew something was wrong and the next day I
How could I? We were in year 6 at the top of the schools hierarchy and
