Personal Narrative Essay: The Electric Cooperative

It was the middle of autumn in the small town of Cooperville, Tennessee. It was dark outside and had been for a while. As a matter of fact, it had been dark almost all day because a storm was brewing. Ellie Powerton, a 16-year-old burst of energy, was just getting home from the high school football game, which they won, of course. The Chargers had been undefeated for the past five years, and Ellie could not miss a game. As soon as Ellie entered her house, the power went out! “Mom? Dad? Is anyone home?” questioned Ellie hopelessly. “I’m right here, honey,” exclaimed her father Ricky. “I’m calling our local electric cooperative right now. I’m sure it is outrageous since we had a storm earlier tonight,” moaned Ellie.
“The whole purpose of the electric cooperative is to bring us affordable, reliable electricity. So, our bill should be about the same as usual. Also, they are a not-for-profit business, so they distribute and sell us energy at cost. Our bill is going to be as cheap as possible because they do not aim to make money, like most other businesses,” remarked Ricky.
“That’s great, Dad. I want to be apart of that cooperative one day, so I can make a difference, just like they do. There really are still good people and businesses in the world, and our local electric cooperative is one of them,” exclaimed Ellie.
“Yes, honey, you’re right. Now, it is time for bed because we have a long day tomorrow at Sparky’s. I need your help with a surprise project I am doing for my new employees, and it involves using all of that energy you have stored up,” remarked Ricky.
“Yay! I can’t wait,” squealed Ellie as she jumped up and down. “Goodnight.”
