It was the middle of autumn in the small town of Cooperville, Tennessee. It was dark outside and had been for a while. As a matter of fact, it had been dark almost all day because a storm was brewing. Ellie Powerton, a 16-year-old burst of energy, was just getting home from the high school football game, which they won, of course. The Chargers had been undefeated for the past five years, and Ellie could not miss a game. As soon as Ellie entered her house, the power went out! “Mom? Dad? Is anyone home?” questioned Ellie hopelessly. “I’m right here, honey,” exclaimed her father Ricky. “I’m calling our local electric cooperative right now. I know they will get our power up and running again, but I’m sure we are not the only family without electricity.” When Ricky Powerton finished his call, he spun around to find Ellie …show more content…
I’m sure it is outrageous since we had a storm earlier tonight,” moaned Ellie.
“The whole purpose of the electric cooperative is to bring us affordable, reliable electricity. So, our bill should be about the same as usual. Also, they are a not-for-profit business, so they distribute and sell us energy at cost. Our bill is going to be as cheap as possible because they do not aim to make money, like most other businesses,” remarked Ricky.
“That’s great, Dad. I want to be apart of that cooperative one day, so I can make a difference, just like they do. There really are still good people and businesses in the world, and our local electric cooperative is one of them,” exclaimed Ellie.
“Yes, honey, you’re right. Now, it is time for bed because we have a long day tomorrow at Sparky’s. I need your help with a surprise project I am doing for my new employees, and it involves using all of that energy you have stored up,” remarked Ricky.
“Yay! I can’t wait,” squealed Ellie as she jumped up and down. “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight sweetie,” replied Ellie’s
Employees and customers have been of high importance through the years at Lincoln Electric Company. Employees are valued and compensated well for their productivity, performance and reliability. The goal has always been to have mutual respect with both the employees and the customers. When an employee or customer has something to say, whether it’s positive or negative, they know they are going to be heard.
History has a strong presence in the current world and as much as the world has changed and evolved many things remain the same. Many traditions and customs reverberate through decades and are carried on by individuals who honor and uphold their predecessor’s beliefs and fundamental rules. One such company is Lincoln Electric Company, founded in the late eighteen hundred by John C Lincoln it has manufactured original designed electric motors. Since its establishment it has maintained a leading status in the employment sector with low employee turnover, the only exception being retirement. It has continuously been ranked the best company to work for and many competitive and non-competitive companies look toward Lincoln Electric to model the
In my opinion Lincoln Electric Company is successful because of many factors; there is a general, clear knowledge and understanding of mutual respect and cooperation among all the people working at Lincoln at all levels.
Her eyes were heavy, her body weak. As she crawled into the bathroom two feet away, Abby felt her body slowly succumbing to the numbness. All of her pain would be gone in less than 10 minutes, so why would she want to turn back? What about the senior trip Abby had planned with her best friend? What about the chair at the dinner table that would now be vacant? A couple of hours later Abby’s family came home from her little sister’s soccer game. Little did they know what they would find as they approached the top of the stairs. Her little sister, Ali, stood still as she looked down at her feet. There on the cold floor lay her big sister, her role model, and her super hero. Ali was crushed when she saw the pill bottle in her hand and the pale color of her skin. Her mom fell to her knees screaming and crying, wondering where she
The T.V. starts flashing, a red banner with the word ‘urgent’, a woman's voice starts talking. “This is a PSA for the town of Lassellsville and surrounding areas. There is said to be a strange man on a rampage running through the town, he is believed to be infected with a new virus called H1N1, please stay inside for your safety, we will keep you updated as much as possible. Police are on the lookout for Juan Carlos Jr.,” a picture of a Hispanic man with red eyes, dark brown hair, and missing teeth popped up on the t.v. “please if you see this man refrain from contact, he is dangerous, I repeat he is dangerous.” Everyone looked at each other, “oh god” John said. “Lock the doors,” Katherine said. So they locked the doors and kept the news on to keep updated. A few hours past and the fear subsided and so did any buzz they had gotten. The news comes back on and they still hadn't found the guy when all of a sudden the tv went off and so did the lights. It was totally dark. “Friggin Christ, you gotta be kidding me” Jacob uttered. “I got this. the generator is right outside”, Gabriella said and started towards the door, there came a knock. Everyone froze. Terror filled the
One of the biggest influences of the founders of Lincoln Electric is from James Lincoln, who created a board of advisors from the pool of employees to advise him (Sharplin, 1989). The board met every two weeks when it was first started, and it still meets today, nearly two hundred years after the company began. This board of advisors is made up of active employees in the company, and they are free to raise suggestions, criticism, or any topics of interest that the employees want the company to address. This level of honesty and openness is a rare quality, and this ability for employees to directly speak with their supervisors and discuss new ideas is probably one of the reasons why employees are so pleased.
After Torrence, his wife, and his five year old son are snowed in for the week, they finally realize the evil that the motel actually possesses. In Firestarter, a little girl possesses the power to start fires with her mind. These powers were givin to her as a test by the government(Bleiler, 1041).
The next morning, Maggie filed a police report about seeing the young boy in their house the previous night prior to her husband’s death. The police went to the Wilson’s house to investigate, but the boy was gone and there was no sign of any unusual activity. The three of them went back to their home where they mourned the loss of their dad and husband. The next night went smooth, they all stayed in the guest bedroom, avoiding the room where they had seen the young boy, and the room where Joe died. Two days later, at Joe’s funeral, Reagan spotted a young boy that looked like the boy she saw floating into her room that dreadful night. Reagan rushed over to her mom and Chandler to tell them what she saw. The night of the funeral, thunderstorms moved in and a big gust of wind blew a tree limb down onto the power lines adjacent to their house. This caused a power outage in the middle of the night followed by a loud lightning strike, which woke Maggie up. Suddenly an image appeared to be floating toward her. The shadow immediately made her think of the young boy they saw the other day. Before Maggie could call the police, the young boy strangled her to death. Her screams woke Reagan and Chandler up. They hid under the covers crying and hoping the young demon boy would go away. However,
On July 13, 1977 around 8:37 pm, a thunder from the sky, it left a huge arc in the night sky, its feeling like the beginning of a kind of fantasy novel. The West Chester wire was hit by a lightning bolt, New York City and its eastern suburbs stuck up for twenty-five hours darkness. As the alternative power supply failed to the wires at that time, New York City generators were shut down. The whole New York area was in a darkness, around eight million people had no electricity available. New Yorkers were forced to pass a "horrible night".
“Coming!” Scarlett yelled. As she rushed to the door, it happened again. The reason she was answering the door is because two weeks earlier, catastrophe struck. That evening was a stormy night, lightning was making the sky look bright as day, and the thunder making the night sound like the angels were bowling a perfect score. Then BANG! A lightning bolt hit the A/C unit supercharging the unit. The time was in the middle of the night, so when Scarlett woke that morning she was very surprised, now Scarlett couldn’t live her life. The following days were difficult, she couldn’t even use hairspray without getting the spray on her dress. Another thing was that the unit made a loud roar, as if a lion was standing right in the kitchen. Also, the storm was so shoddy, she couldn’t call a repairman till a few weeks after that horrific night. Finally, the lines were fixed, so Scarlett pulled out a phone book and looked at the repairman section. She found a company under the name of Johnson Air Conditioning. Scarlett picked up the telephone and dialed the number. The phone rang and rang till
He had gone to be early, woke up the next morning none the wiser to what had happened that night. His folks lived out in the hills and were a bit isolated, and he had helped his parents with a farm which was about twenty-five miles out of Atlanta. When the world went dark, they really weren’t affected so much. They routinely lost power and had a generator in a heavy metal shed, along with three full fifty-five gallons of fuel only for the generator. They were smart enough to have invested some time ago in solar panels. They had a well, which supplied them with water, and had a basement where they stored a lot of their food, at least for a few months, in the event of a
“What are we going to do,” cried Stewart,” We’re all going to die!” Jill started to wail into the rumbling of the flow. “Calm down, both of you! Remember what the radio said, everything will be okay,” Mom exclaimed. The radio that had sat in their swept away living room, had ordered them to stay calm and get to high ground. Stewart continued, unfazed by his Mom’s orders,”Those boulders could tear this house apart! How are we going to be okay!?” Jill’s wailing stopped in shock, then continued even louder than before. Mom calmly answered,” We will be okay; the authorities will come for us.” At that moment the house shook ominously. A cracking sound shook the house and everyone on it to their very core. The house sagged violently to one side tossing the occupants to the edge of the
The year is 2003. It’s the beginning of July in a small suburb town. A little girl sits in her backyard on a covered swing. The sun sat in a cloudless sky, casting shadowy patterns across the cushion on the swing. She can hear her younger sisters laughing and splashing in the pool that is just a few feet away. But she was not interested in swimming, because her attention was on the book on her lap that she had just gotten yesterday. Her feet brushing against the grass with every motion of the swing. Her eyes eagerly scanning the pages, trying to soak up as much of the story she could. Before her mom told her to put the book down and spend time with her family.
The night ebbed in the darkness brUGHT t about the memory of the most tragic event in the history of the small town of Greenville. Not knowing the tragedy that would unfold the citizens rested quietly in the slumber of that hot August night. Storm clouds loomed on the horizon with blazes of light that speckled the sky. In the distance the soft rumble of thunder brought no alarm to this quiet little town. Jenny and Blade lived in the rural area of green pine forests on the outskirts of this sleepy little town. Nowhere in the history of Greenville had such a tragedy happens, and no one was aware of the destruction that loomed on the horizon. As the night closed near the midnight hour, the wind seemed to awaken the lifeless living things in
Everything for a year had been leading up to this point and here I was in the middle of the happiest place on earth in tears because my friends had abandoned me in the middle of Disney on the senior trip.
