I believe that my life experiences have turned me into a person that would enrich your campus and community. Up until I was 9 years old, I had always been an only child which made me grow up very fast and always be way in front of other kids for maturity and responsibility. When I was 9 years old, my mom got remarried and with that marriage came 3 younger step siblings. That was a huge change within my life that also taught me how to be more generous, be more patient with other people, and really take a moment to see situations from someone else's perspective and do whatever I can to help resolve the issue without any problems. I also was very heavily involved in sports my whole life growing up. I played flag football at a young age, basketball,
full contact football, and track & field. Being involved in these sports sports taught me many things, some of which include punctuality, being a leader, standing up for others, and being respectful. Being late to practice was never an option, and if I was late, I always had to make it up to the coach. I also had to learn honesty, if I was late, I had to be honest with my coach as to why I was late and do my best to resolve my behavior. I also learned how to be a leader from my athletics, I could not be late, I could not have a bad attitude, my coaches and teammates relied on me, and I was expected to perform well mentally and physically. Being a leader, I also had to find my teammates who were having a bad day and pick them up no matter how I was feeling. I also had to find teammates who were not being a good teammate and confront them about it, and if that didn’t work, I would talk to my coach so he can handle it. I also always had to be respectful and be coachable. If I was having a bad day, it did not matter, I always had to be pleasant to my coach and let him do his job. I had to always be respectful, even if he was yelling at me. I couldn’t roll my eyes, or ever do any negative gestures, because I had to be respectful. As well as my athletics, I have never been afraid to try new things. My senior year, I joined the school musical, and joined the academic decathlon team. Kids who I was always tentative to talk to, or who may not have liked me since they did not know me, have become some of my best friends. The academic decathlon team has helped me become a better student and help me learn better study habits. Along with being included in many different activities through schooling, I have done some very enriching activities and volunteer work outside of school. I volunteered at a nursing home my freshman year and every thursday during the winter I would call bingo for the elderly people and I had such a good time helping them out and they really appreciated the time I put into helping them. It felt good to do good for the elderly people, they really made me feel good about helping others. I also grew up with a very hard working grandfather that would always make me work hard and he really engraved a very good, hard working work ethic within me. I would help him with home maintenance, yard work, and collect aluminum with him every wednesday to turn in for money. We would also go to our local park and clean up litter to keep the environment and community clean. Some of my hobbies that I do in my own time include hunting, fishing, and being in a band. All three require patience and hard work. I have to practice my instrument all the time to be in the band. As far as hunting and fishing go, I have to be dedicated because both are very hard and time consuming. I truly think that I can enrich your campus and community, I have had many different experiences that have shaped me into a person who can handle any task.
I come from a magnet school that is blessed to have a large number of extremely bright students that are very dedicated to their studies, a must because of the difficult curriculum involved. The community is a very strong one with many of the students going on to do great things, which has given me the inspiration to believe that I can do whatever I want in life, as I see others who are well on their way. Within this community, I have been able to form strong bonds with other students who have similar interests and ambitions. We are able to push each other to learn new things and, through a mix of competition and collaboration, are able to truly progress in many ways, pursuing excellence in both our scholastic and extracurricular endeavors. I believe this has made me a better person, inspiring me to take on a more demanding schedule and to help others when they struggle, because they help me as well. These friendships have also encouraged me to dream big, as others around me are doing, inspiring me to apply to highly selective schools and believing that I will do something to
My extracurricular and academic activities have helped mold me into a person with character and good qualities. These qualities--respect, humility, kindness, ambition, appreciation for diversity and collaboration, and courage--have not come without valuable failures and lessons. I can continue to develop these qualities and build upon these lessons as I go forward with my university goals and the desire I have to enter the healthcare profession as a nurse. I am able to look beyond the exciting, glamorous parts of both and see that there will be lots of hard work and difficulty. I am ready to face those challenges and do my best and give my all.
Kate, was my RA and really helped to make the transition a positive experience rather than a negative one. Which really made me feel like part of the community around campus and in the dorm, honestly she is what made me apply to become a RA myself. If I could help anyone else create a positive experience for someone else in a daunting situation, that would really give me a lot of joy. Moreover, I was part of Student Leadership for a year at my last college and it has given me a lot of experience with helping to navigate students along with helping them in anyway I can as a
I am appreciative of everyone that has allowed for me to become the individual I am today. I know that if I did not live in such a welcoming community I would not be the same positive, hard-working, and responsible person I am today. I have dedicated my life to serving others and I try to be a leader in my community. I am ASB Vice-President, I intentionally plan events that are make my school a more welcoming and fun environment. In addition, I volunteer at local events around my city such as The Taste of Edmonds, Kidstock, the Edmonds Library Children’s Summer Program. Through these events, I have met many wonderful people that are devoted to their community and want to bring everyone together despite our differences. My experiences with community service and other leadership positions has allowed for me to understand the people around me better and strengthen my passions such as psychology due to wanting to help people in
This is when I decided to try and become a member of the student council. I was elected and soon loved it. My school is very important to me and I wanted to do my very best to make it the best possible high school experience for not only me, but every student that attends White Bear Lake. I found that was helpful to have many different views on the council, and I think I brought a new view that was not accounted for before. Being a hockey captain my senior year, I was elected to be in Leadership Academy. This group meets and talks about how to most effectively lead our sports teams as well as the school. This is very important to me because as a leader I want to set the best example possible for my peers and this group allows me to improve my leadership skills to make them even better. I value this program very much because I think it will help me to succeed in the future, because these skills are lifelong skills to have. I have also became a math tutor for my classmates. Being a tutor is very important to me because it allows me to share my knowledge and help
I am a hardworking and dedicated individual that will persevere to accomplish any task. I am a creative thinker that is quick on her feet, which I think will help if any plans we create happen to run into a pitfall. In addition, by being a member of Junior Class Cabinet this year, I have learned the expectations and freedoms that are placed on cabinet members, as well as an understanding of what meetings may consist of. In addition, I learned the process of collectively working together in a group to come to decisions and how different people bring different points of view on an issue, which collectively plays a role in the team. The diversity in ideas and thoughts of a team is what strengthens it, and I believe my perspective and thoughts are unique to what I bring to Senior Class
The community participation that has changed my life for the better is being apart of The Accelerated College Education (ACE) program at American River College. Being apart of this program has given me a push and motivation to finish and succeed in school. Before I started in the American River College ACE program, college success was not always a part of my college career. I have been and will always consider myself a part of the ACE program community in which I have participated in for the past two years. Unfortunately, I am no longer among the rest of my cohort classmates that have been a part of this amazing community. Looking back I now see that the time was well spent in the ACE program. The experiences were life changing in this program
I am an undocumented student at UC Davis. When I am asked a simple question such as, "describe your personal experiences", I ask myself: Where do I begin?
I have participated in the school’s marching band for four years has a member of the color guard. The last two years I have even earned a leadership position. From being in marching band, I have learned the ability to look for a bigger picture in things. For instance, something that may not seem clear now may take a true shape in time. I have also gained working experience through my two lifeguarding jobs from the last three years. I have learned how “size up” a situation and see how to properly deal with a problem. I have also learned, through both commitments, how to time manage myself and both achieve in activity/work and in school. I believe that through these experiences, I can bring a different perspective to the Honors Program’s community and help better it in any way possible.
There is a point in everyone’s life when they step back and realize “I can’t do this anymore, it’s ruining my life”. Many of my friends have started smoking cigarettes while drinking at a very young age, and continue to use this drug currently and don’t realize the affect it has on their future. While I have been smart enough to avoid smoking, I haven’t been as wise at making decisions when it comes to drinking. The amount of partying I’ve done in college has taken over my life, and has had a huge impact on my grades. Changing my drinking habits and continuing to avoid cigarettes will enable me to be the best I can be for the rest of my college experience.
Thumbs Out A girlfriend of mine once defended me to her father by saying, calmly, “Not everyone who wanders is lost.” The dad kicked me out of the house anyway. But the damage had been done. Not everyone who wanders is lost.
I want to be able to provide guidance and support, as well as fun opportunities such as the Freshmen Flotilla and Bedtime Stories, in order to foster a sense of community amongst students and faculty. I have noticed that many of my friends that I lived with the Honors dorm who moved to live off campus have become disconnected with the community of the Honors College, and I would love to make an impact by keeping older students involved. I hope that I will be also be able to impact USC helping make the student population grow through helping to encourage prospective students to come here and answer any questions they have that might cause hesitation or delay. Overall, I would like to help create an accepting and accessible environment to
I am by myself wearing my blue jeans and an old flannel shirt. It is cool outside but I decided to leave my gloves at home, feeling comfortable with my warm shirt and my sturdy boots.
There have been tons of things that I have learned and been taught in my life, by a number of people such as family, teachers, or even friends on occasion. The things they taught me vary from math and other related subjects to just some truly simple yet meaningful life lessons. However, there is nothing quite as unique, quite as special as a person teaching themselves a life lesson. It really is an amazing accomplishment for a person to teach themselves something. It is not quite as simple as another person teaching them something because it is not just the transferring of information from one person to another. The person instead has to start from scratch and process the information they have in their mind in order to come up with a new thought
I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
