This I believe… I believe that I can fly. I believe that I can do anything, be anything and achieve anything. Why? Because I believe in myself. Too many people live their lives in accordance to the thoughts and actions of others, never able to self validate. How they feel about themselves, the love they give themselves, depends on the affirmation they receive from others. Everything for a year had been leading up to this point and here I was in the middle of the happiest place on earth in tears because my friends had abandoned me in the middle of Disney on the senior trip.
Middle school came along and nothing got any easier. We had already moved like five times, Decatur, AL to Danville to Rapids, WI to Port Edwards then back to Rapids. I didnt know where i belonged or who i was. People always told me, "awe, you look just like your mother," I remember looking in the mirror and just feeling disapointed because i wanted to be my own person. The most meaningful and challenging experiences in my life have been through sports and the 4-H club. They have instilled the values of perseverance, confidence, and teamwork within me. I feel that my peers and others could learn valuable life lessons through participating in these organizations. They are not just clubs, but a guiding light for life. For example in sports I have had the opportunity to play on both losing and winning teams. This has given me a different perspective of looking at things. I now realize that even if you fail or lose that is no reason to give up, you still have to get right back up. Just realize your mistakes and errors. Then come back the next time, mentally and physically, ready to meet the challenge. To often in life youth and adults alike fail at something and automatically think that they cannot do it, and give up. Instead of just pushing themselves to run another lap, lift another set, study for another hour, or learn another theorem. Imagine a world if the early American settlers had given in to the British, if the North had given in to the South after the first loss of the civil war, or if Michael Jordan had given up after being cut from the team in high school. People just need to learn to have perseverance and believe in themselves. 4-H has been a series of stepping-stones for me. When I first started out at age four I was shy and afraid to do things that I had not done before, but now I have blossomed into a confident and outgoing young man. I no longer fear getting up in front of large groups and speaking because of the experiences I've had in public speaking events. In addition, 4-H has given me the chance to develop myself as a leader. Over the years I have held various leadership positions on the club, county, and district levels. Also, 4-H has given me the chance to go into the community and help people by leading youth in workshops, assisting the handicap and elderly, and also learn from what others have to teach. In both of these organizations I learned the need for teamwork. For example last year my football team went 0-11 and the main reason because of that was we were not a team.
A time that I did something that I thought I couldn't do, was to stick up for others. When I was in sixth grade, during recess, I saw a girl named Melissa crying. I went up to her and asked what was wrong. She said that people were talking about her behind her back, and that she felt awkward around them. I consoled her by letting her know that friends don't talk behind friends backs and that you have other people that you can talk to during recess. It bothered me how Melissa was sad. She felt a little better after we talked and then we played games.
When I was growing up, I struggled a great deal in school! In third grade I started a new school. They had three tiers of classes. One with the regular kids, another with kids that needed a little bit of help in math and reading, and thirdly, a category that had mentally retarded children learning life skills. I was being placed in that third tier. I absolutely loved school before they had placed me in that class. All that
I had to overcome many obstacles in my life, but the most difficult one I had to overcome was people. I say this because sometimes certain individuals will try to knock you down or make you feel like you are less then what you are. My whole life I had many people who told me I didn’t have the ability to do something. For example many of my peers told me I was too small to play freshmen football three years ago. I almost believe them because I did realize that I only stood 4 feet 11inches tall and only weighed 83.5 pounds. Although my love for the game driven me to have faith in myself and I was going to prove to everyone that size didn’t matter and it is the will in the person that determines if they can play. I didn’t get much playing time freshmen year most of it was on special teams and probably got a hand full of downs on defense.
As a child, my parents worried about my educational development. They didn’t know if I was going to be able to keep up with the other children. I was in the third grade and didn’t know any English. I struggled academically my remaining elementary years to catch up with the other children, but it wasn’t long until I exceeded my peers in middle school. Adversity has been part of my life since elementary school.
Think of your friends, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandparents and others who have showed you how to be a good friend and how to grow in relationships, simply by being there. Think of coaches and instructors you've had who pushed you to do things you didn't want to do so that you would achieve the things you wanted to achieve.
We use the word "believe" in many ways. We believe in things that are clearly not true, like Santa Claus or The Easter Bunny because, as children, we don’t know any better. And as adults, we haven’t gotten much wiser. We believe in things that may be true but cannot necessarily be proven, such as God and true love. A belief can be a religious creed, a system of ethical, moral or philosophical values, or dedication to a social cause. My belief is that a person should not need to depend on someone for happiness.
One life-changing event that has impacted my life was the decision to join my high school lacrosse team going into my freshman year. I didn't know too many people going into my first year of high school besides my close childhood friends. I had been playing soccer for most of my life and had been attending the high school soccer camp to prepare for tryouts. My friend called me a week before school started and asked me if I wanted to join him in at one of his practices. That call changed my life forever.
Feeling the waves crash against the edge of my little Butterfly and lapping over the sides onto me, I flew through the water. I held the ropes and rudder securely in my hands as I aimed straight for the sailboat ahead of me and, beyond the other boat, the buoy. All was going well when suddenly a wind gust came in, and I knowingly kept the sails sheeted in with the intent of getting back into the race. Despite struggling to keep control over the boat, I felt the sail tip and plummet into the water below. I fell over backwards into the refreshing water as I watched my competitors sail on. This happened again and again and I am pretty sure I set a new record for the most capsizes in a Camp Michigania teen regatta. Ever. Period.
It's six o'clock. From down the hall, I hear my mother's footsteps approaching. The door opens.

Believe in myself- still I do not completely believe in myself. I feel like I have doubt on my competence and my personal value.
In six grade, I had to interact with other kids. I slowly learned that I could talk to them, by the middle of the year. The learning in that class in the middle of the school year wasn’t the greatest. I learned a lot and grew a lot during that year, from being scared in the beginning of having friends in the end of the year. I had a great teacher named Mrs. Sandoval who really gave me the help I needed.
