A well- rounded leader can be flexible in any situation given to him or her. I personally feel that I possess leadership characteristics well. I do not only possess leadership qualities for myself, but also to set an example for others. By doing this I might aid them in expressing their leadership qualities, no matter their field of interest. As I help others, they might see it in themselves to aid others in finding their leadership qualities.
My Legacy Leader is LTC Brian A. Coppersmith, USA, Ret. LTC Coppersmith exemplified Army leadership from his character, presence, and intellect to his ability to lead, develop and achieve. LTC Coppersmith’s leadership ability directly affected me as a Human Intelligence Collection Sergeant operating under his command in garrison pre-deployment, and while deployed forward to Iraq. The example that LTC Coppersmith set for me is the foundation that I have used to guide each of my actions on as a leader. It is my hope that I will be able to positively influence and inspire at least one Soldier in the same manner that LTC Coppersmith inspired and influenced me.
A few leadership experiences that I have had come from athletics. I started playing athletics when I was in the fifth grade and I still continue to play as a senior. Over the years I have had the ability to be one of the leaders of both the softball and basketball teams for my school. Being a leader has taught me to use leadership skills that I will need later in the future.
When discussing character, we need to first look at the six pillars of character. The first pillar is Trustworthiness. On the website Charactercounts.org, trustworthiness is written in blue to correspond to “true blue.” To obtain the first pillar you need to be honest, don’t cheat or steal. You need to true to your self and do what is right. The second pillar is Respect, written in gold for the “golden rule.” To obtain respect, you need to be respectful to yourself as well as others, don’t hit or yell at anyone but still arguments in a conversational manner, accept differences, and use manners not bad language (Character Counts). The third pillar is Responsibility, written in green for “finances, or being responsible with money.” To obtain responsibility you need to be accountable for all actions you take, thinking before doing, and always try your best (Character Counts)! The forth pillar is Fairness, written in orange for “dividing an orange between others to be fair to all.” To obtain fairness to need to play by all rules and not make up your own rules, take turns with others, be open minded, and don’t blame others for your mistakes (Character Counts). The fifth pillar is Caring, written is red for “the heart.” To obtain caring you need to help people in need, being kind to others, and always show that you care (Character Counts). Finally, the sixth pillar is Citizenship, written in purple for “regal purple.” To obtain citizenship you need to cooperate with others, get involved, do your share of work, and respect authority (Character Counts). Focusing on all six pillars of character will help any student to achieve good character and carry it with them throughout life.
One of my greatest skills is being able to be compassionate towards others. By placing myself into someone else’s shoes, I find myself being able to better understand where other people are coming from. I am an extremely caring person that will go to great lengths for anyone. I can easily overlook the differences in other people, and this is what helps me get along with almost anyone that I come across. In order to lead people in a positive direction you need to be able to relate to them on a more personal level. It is much easier when people feel comfortable around their leader. I always like to lend a helping hand or even a shoulder to cry on when it is needed. My strengths include integrity, optimism, faith, innovation, and adaptability. Honesty and integrity are the two most important characteristics for leadership success in any work place. The foundation of any relationship is honesty. To be a good leader, one must be honest. My goal is to create a workplace that every people can trust me and I can trust them so that we work together for a common goal. There are many things that have molded me into the person I am today such as being born into a family with four children. With three siblings, I have been forced to be able to work out problems from stealing each other’s toys to having to rush to the emergency room to get stiches because my brother chased me around the house and I tripped. The two areas that best reflect my strong suits are respectful and inspiring. (Steadiness) Respect should not be taken lightly and people want others to show them that they are important. I am not the one to belittle, talk down to someone, embarrass the other person, or not acknowledge someone because they are not like me or do not hold a certain position. People respond in a negative manner and become very defensive when others treat them in any of the ways previously mention. I look at how I want others to consider when speaking and interacting with me. That is the way I have to try to handle myself when dealing with others. Taking calculated risks is what I do best because I cannot stand losing too much if the results do not outweigh the risks involved. I am also very critical on myself and can point out faults in a heartbeat. I have to analyze future actions before I act on anything because I do not want to go wrong or too far away from initial path. Repeating myself or actually running through multiple scenarios takes up a lot of time. Being overly critical on myself will eliminate some of that time that I cannot get back.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. My father usually doesn’t make it his top priority to go to the doctors, so he waited about four weeks until he really didn’t feel good.

If one is a leader, they need to be loyal to the people under them This also helps build trust. The second quality is courage. A leader needs physical and mental courage. Physical courage is going throughout a job even if one knows it will be hard or dangerous. Mental courage is being able to stand up for one 's belief. The third set of qualities is honor, honesty, and truthfulness. Honor in leadership is knowing when something is right and wrong. Honesty is knowing not to lie or cheat. Truthfulness is telling things the way they are even if it will hurt someone 's feelings. These three go together very well. The fourth quality is faith. The leader needs to have faith in the people working under them. The fifth quality is humor. Humor is not alway called for, but in a hard time that everyone is down and out, humor can ease that up. The sixth quality of leadership is modesty. The reason why modesty is so important is that actions speak louder than words. The seventh quality is self-confidence. Self-confidence helps one be a better leader due to it causes the leader to have a better attitude. If the leader did not have confidence in him/herself, they would doubt the calls they made. There also different contexts of leadership, e.g, leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organizations. Some traits that are often associated with being an effective leader include a measure of intelligence, high energy, self confidence, dominance, and a need for achievement. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully.
I fall into a unique, more introverted and innovative personality type. Generally speaking, leaders are often expected to be extroverts. That seems to be the societal ideal. However, there were some well known introverts such Einstein, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela that obviously were successful leaders and innovators with a mission that suited them. I am motivated to lead if the mission has integrity and is an area of interest to me. Those factors feed my extroverted side. I like to improve systems and processes; one can put specialized projects and problems in front of me or ask me to create a growth opportunity and I will run with it.
