One recent group I was member of was the trainer for newly hired medical assistants at work. The group consisted of 10 members. The 10 members each represented one of the ten doctors who practice at the clinic where I am employed. As a member of the team we were encouraged to train each new person hired as a medical assistant for each specific doctor. The training consisted of introducing the new hires to each department, familiarizing them with the daily tasks for the specific doctor the new employee was hired to work for, and helping them transition into their position. In some ways this team was similar to a mentorship program. The members were all encouraged to communicate with one another if there were any difficulties. We generally
met once a week on Friday’s to exchange notes and discuss any problems we may have been experiencing. However, we met sooner in the week if we felt an earlier meeting was needed.

Today must've been the busiest day I've ever experienced at this office. There were so many patients. They all waited at least 3 hours just to be seen by the doctor. The good thing is the office closed at noon so everyone usually was able to make it their shift at work. I got a lot of experience assisting in extractions. I worked with the same doctor I usually work with. She's very nice to me and always requests me when I come in to assist. I interacted with the hygienist, dental assistants (which were just pre-dental volunteers), and the front desk assistant. Everyone had such a good spirit today. I have searched the entire web with no success looking for a story that I can relate to. I read many great stories and they were all inspiriting in their special ways, some were very closed to my story, and they were closed to bring tears into my eyes, yet they were not close enough. I find myself privileged as I am the first generation from my family to complete Bachelor Degree. Therefore, "reaching perfection through adversity" is what inspired my journey of Physician Assistant studies. I am originally from small South-Asian country called Nepal, where I completed my High School education with science major. As a science student, I was always curious to know the cause, symptoms, prevention, and precaution of diseases. Unconsciously, I was trying to pursue medical profession. With a strong desire to help community and undeserved population, I got associated with organizations like: Red Cross and Rotary International during my High School education where I worked as a volunteer. These further strengthen my endeavor to pursue career in medical sector.
Becoming a Medical Assistant believe it or not is an awesome career. Being able to be on the inside and handling emergency hands on is what I will be experiencing. Medical Assistants overall have many job duties and I might add if you are a busy person and you have the urge to help others, then this job is for you. Overall, the objective is to point out the duties, various opportunities and what you will be able to accomplish in the role as a Medical Assistant.

The process of life begins with a wish. Throughout childhood we are constantly asked what we wish to become when we grow up. Usually the answer is a Doctor or Vet. This was my answer as well. Then I became ill and my life suddenly was altered. I became the girl who was gone almost everyday due to an elusive illness. My illness changed who I was and made me want to help others the way I was helped. I wish to become a Nurse. The process of getting there was not easy. I had to deal with tough things such as missing school, working through my illness, and those things led me to my aspirations today.

Especially, when it comes to physical and emotional responsibility. In our sessions, I felt as though the group leaders provided an enormous sense of emotional support. I felt as though the environment was stable and conducive to learning. The setting at first was somewhat tense, but this was acceptable considering that many of us were unfamiliar with the group therapy process. I myself had never undergone a group therapy session, whatsoever. I did, however, appreciate the fact that the environment was quite fair and impartial. The leaders were very nonjudgmental and affirmative in their responses when it came to each and every person’s comments and feedback. Everyone was engaged and actively participated. The group was not hostile and everyone participated in the conversations as well as the exercises chosen. I also felt as though everyone was emotionally tied in. Meaning that if someone was dealing with a personal issue or their emotions were all over the place then the group was susceptible to that individuals needs. For example, we experienced group member who had experienced the loss of a friend. Immediately, each group member became involved and concerned. We were immediately concerned with whether or not she was taking time to grieve or if she was simply doing enough to take time out for herself. In all, the environment over the course of each therapy session displayed a great sense of empathy, concern and support. Another session, in particular, that truly stands out to me in terms of support was when we were asked to share our life experiences and dreams. I can recall stating that I was going to school in order to finally do something for myself. The start of my training began in a group setting with multiple other new hires. I appreciated combining all of the newbie’s together because we all felt on the same playing field. In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice.
