Ralph Waldo Emerson, A well known author , wrote a quote stating " Unless you try to do something beyond what you have mastered , you will never grow ". This statement speaks true volume because you are not challenging yourself to improve the skill sets that you have and your are limiting yourself to what you can actually achieve. His quote should be used as an inspirational guideline to help encourage others to go beyond what they have already accomplished. Getting involved in certain activities or even trying something new can allow people to explore their potential in ways they would have never done prior. The text that truly represents Exploration Literature is Chapter Two, Book Three of John Smith’s The General History of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles. The first characteristic of Exploration Literature is that it was written by explorers and navigators. These are not professional writers. This connects to John Smith because he was an explorer who was given a charter by The Virginia Company to go to Jamestown. Smith’s claim that “whilst the ships stayed” they had a better chance of survival alludes to the fact that they were new to the land (83). The next characteristic is that the work is written to a specific
The world is full of people who have been on an incredible journey of some sort. It seems to be a burning desire in the adventurist’s heart to do something that they haven’t done before. There is an unexplainable satisfaction with completing the journey. The completion of an incredible journey may also cause an opposite effect. An individual may cross the finish with a hunger for more adventure or another mission. The journey can not only change one’s view of the world, but can help the adventurer to grow as a person as well. This can happen through inner or outer conflicts that a person has faced on their journey. I believe that my mission trip to Haiti was an incredible journey that left me with a thirst for more adventure and caused me to grow as a person.

I grew up in the 80s (born in 1977) and while I am sure that era impacted me in more ways than I am even aware of, I think that it was my own personal home life that set me on my current path. My mother was much older (she was 40 when I was born) and only had a 6th grade education. My father was 19 when I was born and had his GED. They had a tumultuous relationship for obvious and private reasons. They divorced when I was seven years old and I remained with my mother. Both parents worked in manual labor type jobs—my mother cleaned houses and my father repaired mobile homes. Neither knew how to be parents. My mother was an alcoholic who, I now believe, was also bipolar, and my father was just

Self-discovery is a way for one to discover who they are in the inside and to be able to express their characteristics to others. “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” - Aristotle.
