1. My five important values are treating elders with respect, being kind to people around me, 2. Child abuse and neglect evoke may evoke strong reactions from me due to my childhood experiences of abuse and neglect. I left my mother at the age of 8 to live with my father and step mother. My step mother abused and neglected me in any way possible. Because of lack of policies to protect children in Africa, I had nowhere to go for help. I had no choice but to endower till I graduated from high school in 1994. Whenever I see or hear stories of child abuse and neglect, I become so emotional, I recall all the hardships I went through during my youth. 3. I would most want to work with children. I am a very good listener and this gives me the ability to listen to others out the need to fix or give advice. II. My weakness is that when I am conversing with others, I do not feel very confident. I feel as though the person I am talking to is not getting each and every word I speak due to my Zambian accent. III. I am a very shy person. I do not like speaking out in front of people. IV. I am not confident dealing with a wide range of emotions including conflict. I am very emotional for instance; I usually find myself shedding tears when I see a very sick person or people mourning. V. When resolving certain issues, I feel the need to put myself in control or in charge of situations as I try to find solutions for instance at home, I am the one who resolves family issues concerning, bills, children school and our finances. I greatly care for others and in some instances I really want to assist others but lack the capability to do so. If I was capable I would want to help out those around me and those I encounter, or just anyone who needs assistance. X. I am willing to adapt to changes in life and I am fairly willing to change my beliefs except about religion or politics like most people) about a variety of things if it is shown to be correct. 7. I receive feedback with a very positive spirit good or bad and work on the issue based on the feedback with the goal of improving or perfecting my working. 8. I would want the social worker to know my African values and tradition, my needs as a mother of five who is a full-time student, my preferences regarding the type of food my family, for instance, we do not eat canned food. 9. My African and Christian values pose a conflict for me with the Social Work Codes of Ethics. For example, there will be situations where my values and traditions will conflict with Code of Ethics 1.02 Self-Determination. It will be tough for me promote the right of clients to self-determination and assist in their effort to identify and clarify their goals in situations where the client decides to abort the pregnancy. Performing my social work duties in this circumstances put me in the position of a sinner based on my African values and Christian
In the National Association for Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, there are many standards a social worker should uphold in order to promote a healthy and helpful relationship with the client. One such aptitude is Cultural Competence and Social Diversity, which is in section 1.05 of the NASW code of ethics (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). There are three sections associated with this competency “Social workers should understand culture and its function in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths of all cultures”. It is assumed that “social workers should have a knowledge base of their clients’ cultures and be able to demonstrate competence in the provision of services that are sensitive to clients”. As a final point “Social workers should obtain education” in order to understand cultural diversity and oppression in people (NASW, 2008, p. 9).
As a social worker, the ability to merge cultural competencies with social work methods and theories allows intervention to be customized to meet their client’s need-based which vary upon culture. Since there are a massive amount of different cultures with different traditions, values, and beliefs the social worker needs to obtain the fundamentals of the culture in order to assess and advocate for the ethnic group effectively. The NASW of Ethics clearly values the competence and the Ethical Principle of Social workers practice within the areas of competence and enhances their professional expertise. In addition, “ Cultural competence is a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system or agency or among professionals and enable the system, agency, or professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations” (NASW, 2000b, p. 61). Cultural competency ensures that our primary mission of the social work profession to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.
I have a long list of values that I find very important to me, but there is a few that stand out the most. Those values are family, friendship, hard work, responsibility, respectfulness, independence, equality, and honesty. My personal values are extremely important
Child abuse is the intentional omission of care by a parent or guardian that can cause a
I was always a shy person who spent most of his time by himself because I was always had the impression of being ignored by others which is why I never I had the courage to speak in front of a crowd or even a small group. I also, couldn’t make friends easily. They were many reason why I couldn’t make friends. I had trust issues. I did not trust anyone, but leaving through this experience has helped me overcome my issues. When I came to the United States, I took speech class which has helped be overcome my shyness. Now, I have the courage to speak in front of a crowd with any fears of being disappointed or defeated by my fears. Moreover, I have the
The following paper aims to discuss and analyze the way in which my personal values intersect with the values I hold as most important within the profession of social work. It would stand to reason that these values would stand on common ground; however, there are places where my personal and professional values diverge. These conflicts may prove to be problematic within my chosen career unless I find a way to prioritize my values, or find ways for them to work harmoniously with each other.
When I was a few months old, I was placed in foster care because my mother was charged with child endangerment and neglect. I do not know why she was charged but I am sure it had something to do with her severe drug addiction. I stayed in foster care for 4 and a half years before my next of kin was contacted, my grandmother. She traveled back up to New York to begin the process of gaining guardianship of me. (She had done the same arduous process a year earlier for my brother) She was granted custody and quickly moved me away from New York. When my brother was eight and I was seven, our grandmother adopted us and became our permanent legal guardian. My father wasn’t around because he was in prison for numerous charges.
Speech of any kind has been the downfall for me from the beginning. I have always been that shy girl and have always had trouble with interpersonal communication especially.
Personal values: A key ethical principle in the NASW Code of Ethics states the following: "Social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of the person. Social workers treat each person in a caring and respectful fashion, mindful of individual differences and cultural and ethnic diversity. Social workers promote clients ' socially responsible self-determination. Social workers seek to enhance clients ' capacity and opportunity to change and to address their own needs. Social workers are cognizant of their dual responsibility to clients and to the broader society. They seek to resolve conflicts between clients ' interests and the broader society 's interests in a socially responsible manner consistent with the values, ethical principles, and ethical standards of the profession." Briefly discuss how your personal values and beliefs coincide or conflict with this ethical principle. How will you resolve any conflicts between your personal values and the requirements of the
After reading the vignette that really does not mention what services that “my” agency actually provides I have to assume that as a mental health agency we could provide some helpful services for this family. Also the vignette does not mention the time of day that I was paying this visit to my client’s home, so the fact that the children reported that they haven’t eaten all day and were hungry could be alarming if it were after noon, but if it were early morning then I would be less concerned. Conversely, the father being drunk is really not any of my business, but would be somewhat concerning if it were early morning, but again not my business unless he is causing harm or actually neglecting his children.
There are times I don’t know what to say in a direct conversation. I don’t want to disturb a person. I am nervous they may not
Some of the most basic words I have trouble saying. For example, I have never been able to say the word “position” correctly; I pronounce the “sit” as a “z.” My family says that I will grow out of it and speech therapy isn’t necessary. I don’t think it’s as simple as that. I decided to try to fix my problem on my own.
The identification of specific social work values, ethical principals, and standards are imperative. The social worker’s personal values need to align with those of the social work profession and identify challenge during the field practicum if they do not. Firstly, the social worker’s primary goal is to service her clients in need and address social problems (National Association of Social Workers (NASW), 2015). The social worker needs to be self-aware of any emotional triggers and biases since they can impede her from accomplishing her primary goal to service her clients. Once she manages her emotions and minimizes her biases, she can focus on her clients by providing guidance and education and identifying possible social problems
Personal values help individuals dictate their actions and beliefs. It is common that people will have their own set of core values that represent who they are as an individual and what they stand for. Personally, I have many values that I find to be very important to me. The first value is authenticity. In my own words, in order to be truly authentic, you must embrace your true self.
