Most people’s lives are complicated by family relationships. The way one is raised can affect self-esteem and is the emotional and psychological blueprint for life. Family is the first teacher in a child’s life. One can learn morals, manners and valuable life lessons. How one is raised can add negatively as well as positively to society. Family relationships can set the tone for how one feels about family and traumatic events can challenge those views and feelings. The sudden death of my mother was the event that challenged my family to see if the ties that bind were strong enough to hold. It was also an event that would determine the outcome of my feelings about my family. I am a product of “other-parenting”. This is when extended kin provide care for a child and complement or supplement what parents can or cannot provide (Beyond the Nuclear Family, 2011). As early as I can remember as a child, my family has always been involved in my life. Being the first born child of teenage parents - my mother was sixteen and my father was nineteen, the responsibility of raising me was shared by my grandparents, aunts and uncles; the same was true for my sister who was born three years later. Though my parents were not married, my father’s presence was so consistent in our lives, we did not miss the fact that he did not reside in the home with us. My uncle lived with my mom, my sister and I, so he served as the authoritarian when my father was not present. Growing up in a home with extended kin gave us a strong sense of security because my uncle was able to step forward and fill in the gaps. We were raised to believe that the eldest sibling in the family had authority over the other siblings and the role of the eldest sibling was... ... middle of paper ... ...a moved to Georgia to attend school, my eldest daughter relocated her job and moved to Georgia as well because she did not want Tia to be in an unfamiliar state without family. My views and feelings about family remains the same from childhood through adulthood. I am blessed to have been born into a family where morals, love and genuine concern exist. I grew up with a united and helpful family. The strong Christian values and morals that were inculcated in my childhood, I have passed on to my children and now my grandchildren. My family was what made me who I am today. Works Cited DePaulo, Bella. “Beyond the Nuclear Family”. http://www.vision.org/visionmedia/ Summer 2011 Issue. Family relationships assist me because they help me focus on my family rather than the tragic event that happened. The effect a family has on one another during a time of difficulty is very strong. One might have a mother, a father, and also brothers, sisters, grandparents, etc. These are the people that one will draw closer to in times of need. Besides their spouse, one’s relationship with their mother is the closest relationship one will have with another human being.. For six weeks, Lorri is alone on an island with the two deceased passengers, Josie Archer and Clarence Fuller, and all that she longs for is the accompaniment of her mother. Her only will to live is so that she could be with her mother again since she has not been able to see her for years before because of World War II. In Wick 's book, Every Storm, she says, “ 'Mother, Mother,’ Lorri sobbed, not able to get close enough,” (Wick 93). When one does not have a mother figure, they lose that maternal bond. The relationship between a mother and child is strong because no one will be able to replace ones real mother. This certain situation made me think of how lucky I am to have a mother that cares about me. It also made me think that if I were in the same
Family can help to build different character traits or it can help to better people. Family is also something that can be relied upon to help with different problems. Many times families and family members will teach a lesson that can be used later in life to help with varied situations. The people that are in the non-fiction literature all have one thing in common: they faced a problem, and were able to overcome it with the help of their family. With the help of family, people can better themselves and the people around them, by using the lessons their family has taught them.
The values that I learned from my parents as an infant, child, adolescent, and, most recently, as an adult, are continually enforced and taught to me today. It is because of this strong family support that I have stayed the same as I was before entering college. My family has always preached strong family values that will be with me for the rest of my life, and will be passed on to my children and grandchildren. Some of the family values that I have learned from my family are to always respect my elders and to have good manners no matter what.
For most people family is one of the most important parts of life. For they are the people who raised you and taught you things needed in life. For most of us we have a connection with are family that is unparallel in life, which is the reason for are undying love. At times though there is a point at which we take are family for granted like they will always be around. Parents might do things that are not agreed upon by the children, yet the parent thinks it is in the child's best interest. Sometimes it might not even be the best thing to do in that situation, yet parents have a true desire to protect their children from the dangers of the world. On the other hand, children do not always listen to the advice their parents give them and can get themselves into a lot of trouble. Anyway you look at it, most of the time we do not realize what we have until it is not longer with us. Many times we do take our family for granted and when one passes away there are many things we wish we could have said or done to show them are love. The play "Into The Woods," by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine is a direct example of how families treat each other. There is conflict ranging from hating sisters, to protective mothers and a disagreeing husband and wife. In the end lives are lost, family are in pain and those left realize that they need to treat their family better and hold on to the loved ones that they have. Families do encounter many difficult choices together, but they also must solve the problems together, and keep peace within the family, because bad choice will be regretted when those loved ones are not around longer.
Family is the fundamental group of people that hones each individual into a social being and trains each person into a being that complies with various changes that may occur in one’s life. It aids in developing a person’s skills and attitude in relating to other people. If not for the family, growing and developing one’s self is a difficult and an almost impossible task to accomplish. In the article by Joan Patterson, known as Understanding Family Resilience, it had highlighted various information and explanations of how a family responds and should opt to act during times of adversity, or also known as family resilience. It is defined by McCubin, H and McCubin, M. as “characteristics, dimensions, and properties which help families to be resistant to disruption in the face of change and adaptive in the face of crisis situations.” Since change occurs on a daily basis and is entirely inevitable, the trait of a family to be flexible in adjusting is necessary. Events that may trigger changes are various crises and challenges or internal and external forces. Such occurrences that arise and are experienced by the family may draw most families to become hopeless and disoriented. In Patterson’s work, a clear explanation and citation of various instances to prove that such misfortunate events that could lead to the disorganization of a family can be avoided and be used as an opportunity to further strengthen the relationship founded in the family.
Family dynamics are patterns in the relationships between family members. Every family has its own dynamics and there are very different from one another because of the many aspects that influence them such as the numbers of members in the family, the personalities of the individuals, the cultural background, the economic status, values, and personal family experiences. This paper will analyze the two different relationship patterns found in the poem “Elegy for My Father, Who Is Not Dead,” by Andrew Hudgins and in the short story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker. By interpreting those two sources through Freud’s concept of family, the family environment and the relationships between the members will be analyzed to illustrate the ways family dynamics
Differentiation of self, which notes that the family is the primary impact of a person’s personal development.
The Olson’s family experienced a shift in their life when John and Susan lost their jobs, and when their 3 year old daughter died in a car crash. According to Smith and Hamon (2012), a family is composed of many members who have their own roles and expectations, and when those roles or expectations are broken, families experience difficulties. (Smith, and Hamon 2012). Based on the Family Systems Theory, families need to be viewed as
When the word “family” is discussed, most people think of mothers, fathers, and other siblings. Some people think of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even cousins and more on the pedigree tree. Without family in people's lives, they would not be the same people that they grew up to be today and in the future. When people hear the word family they think about, the ones who will help them in any way they can whether it’s money, support, advice, or anything to help them succeed in life. Family will forever be the backbone of support.
What is family? Each person defines family according to what family means to him/her. The concept of family means various things to different people, yet the meaning of the word can bring different emotions to the person who hears it. But no one is born into this life alone. Everyone has known the bond of family, at least at birth, and for many it is a bond that can last life long time.
Family brings a sense of emotional bonding, socialization and care. Family values include ideas like: respect for parental authority, stability in marriages, chastity before and outside marriage and care for the elderly.
The family unit is as diverse as the societies they each represent. This sometimes can manifest traditional roles of doting mothers and providing fathers into a home with two sets of parents (Kurrien & Dawn Vo, 2004). Therefore, the involvement and importance of the extended family: grandparents and other family members such as aunts and uncles play a significant role in both its economic and social function.
My family is who I have socialized most with since they were the first ever people I interacted with. Family has had a large influence over who I am today because they are the people who I learned almost everything from (primary socialization). The reason I have such high morals and values is because of my family. By observing and taking from their behavior I was able to form my own values through nurture. Although they taught me a lot of beneficial things that make me a better person, I have also learned from some of my family members bad habits. My uncle always smoked around the kids, including myself, when I was younger and I never liked the smell and now I associate that memory with cigarettes and it makes me not have any desire to smoke whatsoever. I also had another uncle who went to jail a lot for selling drugs and other related things, and since I definitely did not want to end up in jail I now make smart decisions, and associate myself with people who benefit me. On the whole my family has made me a nobler person by both their good and bad
Family plays an enormous role in people’s lives, and whether we like it or not our family helps shape us into who we are today. Many families were torn apart during the perilous 2004 tsunami that shook the earth and acquired many lives. When Dang was running, trying to escape the colossal wave that was ravaging her village, all she could contemplate was how to get back to her family. She did not stop to help other people, because she wanted to make sure her husband and children were unscathed. At one point, Dang ignored the warnings of a man who saved her, only thinking that, “…she needed to get home, and she needed to get there now.”(Krauss 127) Family provides unconditional love for most, and that love is something that we cling to in a hard-hearted world. Furthermore, a mother’s love for her child is undying and genuine. Nearly all mothers would give their lives for their children without a second thought. When facing disaster our loved ones are there cheering us on and holding us together. Family keeps us moving forward, and helps us overcome and conquer our worst fears and hardships.
The social institution I have chosen to address is that of family. An individual’s family life, both past and present, can have such a big impact on a person’s life in both a positive and negative manner. It is how we as individuals chose to handle life changing situations that will shape our lives and those around us. Family is such a fascinating social institution to study because every individual comes from a different family background or has a different experience than that of a sibling. You can learn so many things about a person by looking into their family background, origin and what type of up brining they had.
