In “Another Holiday for the Prince” by Elizabeth Jolley the author draws upon many themes, one in particular that Jolley illustrates is how poverty influences changes in the individual lives within one family. To begin with the head of the family; a father is never mentioned in the story, not even once. But by not having a father figure in the story the reader can understand a lot. In society the man is the one who earns the money and provides all the essentials for his family, however this story is presented in a society were the mother has to be the man of the family. Ones self-esteem can be diminished as a result of poverty, alienation; destructive effects of a week personality or society on the individual. The author effectively conveys this theme through the use of characterization, symbolism and contrast.
As a person who has worked since the age of 16, continuously without very many breaks in between, it can be easy to feel burned out after a while. Typically, Americans are allowed a two-week vacation after 1 year, and any time after 25 years, up to 5 weeks. This can indicate that the majority of Americans spends a substantial amount of time at work, as opposed to being with their family, or having time to themselves, thus aiding in a stressful lifestyle. For example, it has been stated that “people continually exposed to high levels of stress in their jobs may pay a price in their well-being (Etzion, 2003, p. 214). When this happens, there is a possibility that the individual will be unenthusiastic about going to their place of employment, and only going due their financial responsibilities There is also a chance that the employee may want to pursue a career elsewhere, which can be bad for business if the worker is considered as valuable. In my place of employment,
Thanksgiving Day is a day of family, food, and giving thanks for the blessings in life and yet some people believe Thanksgiving to be a prep day for Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. The focus of Thanksgiving shifted from family bonding to incessant shopping. This trend of taking away from the hours of Thanksgiving in order to shop is enraging. It steals away from family time for the shoppers and the employees. Employers threaten workers that if they do not work on that certain holiday, they will be fired. Black Friday should be kept to Friday instead of moving in on my family time. The whole culture of Black Friday has become repugnant and unnecessary.
Too many a time have I heard the wrong term. I walk into a restaurant, they say it, a store, they say it, hell I've heard it on a Sunday morning before church. Happy Holidays. Give me a break. I'm just sick of people saying happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas.
As December approaches the air all around becomes filled with the smell of Christmas. Without thinking, people get out their trees, put up their decorations, and start buying their gifts. To do all these things is normal; almost a force of habit. These habits are customs that people look forward to and treasure. For some, though, holidays have deeper meanings. They hold a deeper meaning, and are sacred and pure, in a way. To them, they have deep religious roots that span over generations and generations. What most people do not realize is that their beloved holidays often have pagan roots, and unpure beginnings.
Summer and vacations are synonymous, especially with my family. Does Chevy Chase and summer vacation ring a bell? With a family of six, anything is possible. There are two types of excursions that we take every year. I refer to one as my family vacation and the other as my family trip. My family vacation to the beach is an annual event, but my family trip destination is always different. This past summer my family and I went to Wyoming. Both experiences were the highlights of my summer but for very different reasons.

Where to go on vacation is a popular conundrum in many households every year. People enjoy going out of town to relieve stress and get away from work for a short time. The beach and the city are both great places to vacation. They are both open anytime of the year. It depends on what you want to accomplish where you should decide to go. I hope the next few paragraphs help you make that tough decision easier.
My Christmas break was fun. My cousin and I had went shopping at the mall the money we got for Christmas; that’s all we asked for. My mother, stepfather and brothers and sister came down to Jackson from Memphis; I live with my grandmother.
Everyone has holiday expectations and dreams of the perfect Thanksgiving, a magical Christmas and a prosperous New Year. While these expectations are what most strive for, it is not always how these occasions happen. Setting realistic expectations that leave room for mishaps that may occur will perhaps save you from suffering undue disappointments.
Every holiday has their own purpose within this culture. There are holidays for remembrance of their brave troops that help keep the country safe. There are religious holidays like Christmas and Easter. There are holidays like Thanksgiving, which is meant to help people remember to be grateful for what they have as well as giving back to those less fortunate. There are holidays like Father’s Day and Mother’s Day where people honor their parents. The 4th of July is set to remind them of their fight for independence, where they celebrate with fireworks and music.

American holidays have been around ever since the Mayflower made its long voyage overseas. Many of the holidays that we celebrate today have originated from holidays from before America even existed. Even though the historical figures that holidays are for, as well as the beliefs holidays are based upon are slipping away from Americans’ minds, holidays should not be eliminated from the calendar. This is because they have shaped and are continuing to shape American culture, and they are all cultural and/or historical events.
