Write personal essay describing OT as career choice, reflecting on volunteer work, community service, and preprofessional coursework I have always been fascinated in a career in the healthcare industry. I always wanted a job where I can work with people on daily basis and help them to recover and depend on themselves for daily living and working. I want to help people to improve their quality of life, mentally and physically, and that what occupational therapists do. According to the Bureau of Labor & Statistics, OT is one of the fastest growing careers and it will continue to be in demand for many years to come. My current job as a security officer gives me the chance to improve my communication skills and learn how to deal with people. I have completed 40 hours of observation at different clinics with adults, seniors and pediatric patients. This experience helped me to be more confident while communicating with patients. I also have seen how occupational therapist use exercises and set up therapy equipment and encourage patients to complete activities and tasks. Observing at the Atrium Post Acute Care of Wayne View, gave me the chance to help elderly people to do their therapy exercises. I encouraged them to complete their activities, supervised by an occupational therapist. Through my shadowing period, I have built relationships with residents and learnt how to communicate with patients in different aging groups. This has been exciting and rewarding experience for me.
