Personal Essay: My Definition Of Independence

Growing up I thought having independence meant that you were a strong person and that everything was easy because you could now make your own choices. I also believed that to have indepence you must wear red, white, and blue. I was wrong. Independence in the dictionary means freedom from the control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others. This definition and my own personal definition of independence is very similar, but not quite. My definition of independence is having to make mature decisions on your own and figuring out how to handle the outcome of the decision you made on your own. Having independence is something I have taught myself these past couple years. It has taught me that by making certain decisions can dict take an outcome. By being independent doesn’t mean you know all the answers it means that you willing to struggle through on your own to figure out the situation. In the summer of 2016 my little sister, Jenna and I went to New Mexico to visit our brother. My brother is in the Air Force and has traveled to several different places in the world. This was the first time in four years that he had been back in the states so my mother and father thought it would be a good idea to let Jenna and I fly out to New Mexico for the summer. The only problem we had was the lady next to us talking for six hours about her two cats, Franny and Nix. The whole trip there made me have a feeling of independence because I, plus my sister were doing this all on our own for the first time. There was no one there to say go this way or that way, it was just her and I on our own trying to figure out what to do next, which I think describes being independent perfectly.
