Do you tend to give up when things get difficult? That seems like a common problem for most people. Giving up seems so easy, but perseverance is so much more rewarding. I have personally learned to persevere through running cross country which has helped me reach my goals, learn from my mistakes, and build my confidence; that is why perseverance is so important to me. One of the many reasons perseverance is essential is that it helps us reach our goals. As Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” One of the biggest goals that perseverance has helped me achieve is running cross country. This summer, I started practicing cross country. I thought about giving up many times, but my determination kept me going. Now, running is one of my favorite hobbies. I am so glad I didn’t let my fears get in the way of my goals. …show more content…
Educational psychologist, Carol Dweck once stated that perseverance “involves our ability to learn from failure and try again when thrown off our horses until we get thrown off no more”. I made many mistakes and had a ton of bad days during cross-country practices, but when the season came around, I got to a place where I could be proud of my running. I still expect to struggle in the future, but I will never give up until I’m as good as I aspire to be. The last reason perseverance is necessary is that it builds confidence. People gain confidence after they persevere through adversity and succeed. Before I started cross-country, I was not confident in my athletic ability because when things became difficult, I just gave up. Now that I’ve learned how important determination is, I have more confidence than I’ve ever had and it has not just grown with my running, it has transferred to real
“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all. Dale Carnegie believed that perseverance could overcome even the harshest obstacles. Perseverance is inspired by a purpose, an unsatisfied drive to achieve a goal. During a cataclysmic event, only people with a purpose endure.
... front of me since the road to success is far away. Facing unknown obstacles is like drowning in water because obstacles are weighted heavily and sometimes I can't lift it. I just have to use my strength and hopefully, I can raise it off me. I learned that sometimes it is better to have a little false hope than to have none. Perseverance doesn’t not come naturally to all people but eventually it will come because they will find it. It helps them find their inner self by going through obstacles so that they can be more of a life challenge. I believe that this can change a person who they are because it is something everyone needs to go through life.
The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines perseverance as the continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. In today’s society, there are so many walls and barriers that prevent humans from achieving their dreams and goals and people begin giving up. However, great poets such as Homer and famous music groups such as Mumford and Sons have used the strife of humanity to compose works that can be used to inspire and institute hope for humanity. With perseverance, there are three key aspects, struggle, loyalty, and strength. The struggle is what allows humans to learn, grow, and better themselves, the loyalty demonstrated provides motivation for success, and the personal strength allows the person to build
Most people have never had to persevere-holding onto that last sliver of hope-as much as nine American boys who were thrown from their small Washington towns onto the international stage, back in 1936. Don Hume, Joe Rantz, Shorty hunt, Stub McMillin, Johnny White, Gordy Adam, Chuck Day, Roger Morris, and Bobby Moch were all part of The University of Washington's inspirational 1936 Olympic crew. Each of these rowers had their own stories of perseverance, determination, and grit bringing them together to work magic on the water. They trusted each other, relied on each other, and most importantly they had total confidence that “no man would pull the full weight of the boat”. So what you need to understand is that these boys were not born with silver spoons in their mouths and they had to work hard to succeed. This crew was composed of sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, not sons of businessmen or lawyers like the crews back east, like Harvard or Yale, were made up of. They persevered and had the drive to succeed, and it payed off after years of work with a gold medal in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and the satisfaction of wiping the smile off Aldoph Hitler's and his German crew faces. Perseverance is the steady persistence in a course of action, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.
“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”(Michael Jordan). Every once in awhile, people are faced with hardships, it’s just a matter of life. However, some of these people may not know how to deal with these obstacles that they are facing. Although the individuals in the selection faced a variety of different hardships, they all overcame these obsatcles by perservering and not giving up.
Only individuals who are patient and who have a strong determination can achieve their goals through the means of persevering. Many people may fail at persevering through tasks because these tasks are often times difficult. Many times, people get discouraged and quit. As Samuel Johnson once said, “Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance”. This quote explains how the best outcomes come from persistence. Whenever one is faced with a problem, they are tempted to ignore it, rather than solve it. However, by not giving up and working diligently until this problem is solved, a desirable outcome will result. This quote and concept is shown furthermore in the works, The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway and in Unwind by Neal Shusterman.
No one wants to be defeated, but sometimes we do have defeats. For example, the United States lost some battles in the Civil War but in the end they won the war. Maya Angelou is known for expressing this idea of perseverance through one of her famous quotes. This quote stood out to me because, like everyone else, I have faced obstacles that have knocked me down once or twice. It is one’s own choice if they want to stand back up and succeed or if they want to allow themselves to be defeated by a difficult situation. In track, there have been many times when I had an off day, and I did not compete to my fullest ability in one event. However, I cannot afford to let that
With amenities such as cars and buses, I have no pragmatic reason to use my feet, especially if I lack a destination. I do not run to the gym to acquire a stylish figure, for my slender frame does not require it. And this grueling run differs from a relaxing jog to a coffee shop. I am pushing myself constantly to run faster and farther, for my team as well as for personal glory. Somehow with tireless effort and unflagging commitment, I run through the sleeping streets of my neighborhood with the awareness that I am steadily reaching my goal-maintaining the discipline that cross-country demands. In my mind I see a victory line that symbolizes the results of perseverance and hard work. This line makes me realize that ambition and tenacity do not go in vain.
A specific case is Jennifer Eagan subjecting herself to constant literary critique, a situation that many would avoid. The difference between Eagan and others is one thing, she wanted to improve. In order to improve one must face challenge. In reality everyone faces a difficult situation at some point in their life, but the severity depends on the person. Some may perceive an AP class to be difficult while others might say that sitting in class has a certain level of difficulty. These situations don’t create perseverance because one puts themselves in front of every difficult situation, but instead because they make a habit of it. It is the act of unconsciously carrying out habitual actions that creates perseverance, not intentionally putting oneself in difficult
Perseverance commonly occurs in everyone’s lives. Every single person that exists persists towards a goal, and every person has persisted a goal for as long as people have existed. However, even though perseverance usually resonates with pursuant people, it is also what makes people stand out the most as well. No person becomes a great and influential individual by half-trying something, and then giving up. Everyone must learn to push through tough times and failure to get anywhere in life. No matter what the situation may be, pursuance remains the key component for one’s accomplishments and goals because one must try first before they can achieve their goals; whether that goal becomes survival, being a hero, becoming a dominant administrator,
In Lost Boy, Lost Girl, John demonstrates persevering because he persists through the war to head to safety. For instance, John perseveres by swimming across the Gilo River. The text states, “ ‘ I can’t help you’, I shouted at the big man. I kept struggling and swimming and kicking” (Dau 70). This shows that John perseveres because he is facing a challenge, but he is overcoming it to survive. He is struggling to swim across the Gilo River, but it is his only chance to flee from the ambush. Additionally, John perseveres by walking distances while facing starvation. The
This application would fail to capture the true essence of who I am if I did not delve deeper into my relationship with the great sport of running.
This will prove to be especially important as I move on to college, and as I embark on my journey of being a student athlete at the University of Nevada Reno. I know that being a student athlete will be challenging in the sense that I will have so many obligations and so little time; however, this mentality will further help me achieve my goals both athletically and academically, as I refuse to settle for anything less that what I am capable of achieving. I know that at times it will be tough, but I also know that quitting is not an option. If I were to stop in the middle of a race right when it got tough, I would never be able to experience the triumph of finishing. In the end, the glory of the fight is one of the most rewarding elements of
As the hot wind blew over the runners on the start line, I started to jump up and down in preparation for the imminent race. We were at the first cross country meet of my junior year, and nerves were abundant. I readied myself at the start line and I began considering my success in past years. The first two years of high school passed quickly, and I tried to recall the rapid improvement I experienced. The coming year was different; with other commitments to consider, I was worried my running career would suffer.
We finish what we start. This was the motto that kept me going during the strenuous training period for a marathon. But prior to that, I must confess, I wasn’t an athlete. I was never interested in playing sports, except for recreational badminton. During gym class, I would walk three quarters of the time when it time for the dreaded mile run. I preferred staying indoors and sitting on the couch and watch movies. The first time I had heard about a marathon training program, called Dreamfar, in my school, I thought to myself, what kind of crazy person would want to run a marathon? Never did I realize, eight months later, I would be that crazy person.
