Athletics has made a difference in my life through its redefining of the word “success.” Before I got involved with track and cross country, success was measured by goals I set and achieved for myself that made me happy. Since then, I have realized that success is much more gratifying when it is dependent on making those around me proud. In track, success is when I have trained hard enough so that I am able to help my relay team win a race or break the school record. In cross country, success is when I have built up enough endurance to contribute to the team score and help my team move on to the state meet. This mentality has translated to my daily life, as I am constantly working hard to please those around me. At school, I always do my homework and get good grades so that my teachers do not have to focus extra energy on getting me to do my work. At work, I strive to go above and beyond my typical duties so that I can lessen the responsibilities of my co-workers. At home, I help out with chores without being asked so that my parents can have one less thing …show more content…
to worry about. When a teacher congratulates me on a good test grade, a co-worker thanks me for lessening their workload, or my parents are surprised to see that the dishes are already taken out, I feel success. Along with this mentality, I have been instilled with a resistance to quitting; I will exhaust every opportunity that I have to succeed before I consider giving up.
This will prove to be especially important as I move on to college, and as I embark on my journey of being a student athlete at the University of Nevada Reno. I know that being a student athlete will be challenging in the sense that I will have so many obligations and so little time; however, this mentality will further help me achieve my goals both athletically and academically, as I refuse to settle for anything less that what I am capable of achieving. I know that at times it will be tough, but I also know that quitting is not an option. If I were to stop in the middle of a race right when it got tough, I would never be able to experience the triumph of finishing. In the end, the glory of the fight is one of the most rewarding elements of
success.
I have been a four year letter-winner in volleyball and basketball. Athletics have been a crucial part of developing my character and work ethic. In sports, you must work together with your team to reach your goals. Trust and communication skills are vital and are tested every day. The failure and setbacks I have faced through sports have helped me to believe in myself and have the self-confidence that it takes to be successful in athletics and in life. As a senior captain of the volleyball and basketball teams, my leadership has improved tremendously as high school has progressed. Being a leader holds me accountable and I aim to be a role model for younger teammates on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.
Athletics have influenced my career goals because it has taught me to never give up on what I believe in and what I want to achieve. Sports have also taught me that success comes with hardwork and dedication and in order to succeed in my career I have to be dedicated and spend a lot of time and effort to learn the skill of nursing. Sports have also taught me that in order to succeed in the workforce I need to be able to work with people I don’t necessarily enjoy spending time with, and again this happens in athletics but in the end you need to put your differences aside to obtain the greater
Both on an off the field, my enthusiasm and motivation to obtain a goal is a trait that I am very proud of. I have faced many tasks where a leader had needed to step up and I am always willing to do so. I am also willing to get help when I need it. If I can’t complete a task by myself I do not mind asking a classmate, teammate, friend or a teacher for guidance. By bringing that openness and leadership to University of Charleston’s Athletic Training Program I believe that I can also attribute to the University of Charleston’s Mission Statement “to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement.” By bettering the Athletic Training community by providing care to our Athletes I believe that I will be a great addition to the Athletic Training
High school sports are approached with clashing opinions. Some of these opinions are positive, and supportive of athletics. “Athleticism, among many activities, offers teens a physical outlet to exert their troubles, anger, emotions, and other feelings” (Chen 1). This can be observed in nearly all of the football players in Friday Night Lights. This can also be noticed in the world today. “Athletics help high school students understand their own abilities and talents” (Chen 1). This piece of evidence is very accurate when describing high school athletes. Sports can make a high school student humble. As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life.
In my life, I had not had the chance to be a part of something that influenced me much, until I joined football my freshman year in high school. Joining football was perhaps the most devoted and wisest thing that I did because shortly after joining I began to see changes for the better, and from then I saw the person that I wanted to be in the future. In other words, it shaped the person that I am today and will be for the rest of my life. Not only did the sport influence me but it also equipped me with a new mindset that affects me today in my decision making skills, time management and many other beneficial life virtues. I believe that these virtues will bring me success in the nearest future because I feel confident about myself and I feel more in control in my life through my actions, all thanks to simply joining what seemed to be a “regular” extracurricular.
“If at first you don’t succeed try , try again.” At the age of six I was starting to play football. The game was a hard hitting running and commitment. I was six years old at the time now I’m fourteen a freshman in high school a lot has changed.
Throughout my life, my work ethic, my mental strength, and the skills I have learned, are largely because of my athletic background and all of the things I have gone through with them. To be good at sports, one does not have to
...must simply want to participate in your sport. Not everyone will choose or is able able to persist through difficult tasks and difficult times, especially when these rewards and benefits are not immediately forthcoming. But cutting edge athletes realize that many of the benefits come from their participation, not the outcome.
So my teammates and I are always raising our standards for ourselves in softball, in the classroom, in our characters, and in any other aspect our coach could think to bring up in a post-game speech. However, it is through all of this that I have learned that athletics and activities are only the vehicle to a much larger destination. I have learned how to be the best student, best sister, best daughter, best teammate, and best person I can be through sports and other extracurriculars. Sports, softball especially, have been a vehicle for me to use to get to the person I want to be, and that is how athletics and activities have influenced my life. Through necessity, I have learned to become a leader and a teacher to those who need it the most. Through struggle, I have matured and gotten stronger, and I can be strong for those who struggle alongside me. Through sports, I have gained a family that could never be replaced, and I can share that family with others so that they, too, might understand just what it genuinely means be there for somebody. I have learned so much, and I share that knowledge to impact those around
I decided that I wanted to play a sport, I chose volleyball. Most of my friends played the sport so it wasn't hard for me to adjust and make new friends. Becoming a student athlete was a big adjustment for me, I could no longer float through my classes but I need to excel. And that's exactly what I did. For the first time in my high school career I made not only honor roll, but principal’s honor roll. For the first time my mom was proud of my report card, that made me even more proud. From then on I knew I wanted nothing less than what I earned, good grades and a proud family. From my decision to chose to become a student athlete not only make me work harder but, be great at everything I put my mind to. I had motivation to stay successful, to stay eligible. Three years ago if you were to ask me where I thought I would be my senior year, I probably would have told you low level classes barely making it by. Now here I am today excelling in my education preparing to take the next step in my future, college. Even if we don’t understand why we go through them, we have to be willing to let our obstacles become out
Cross country and track have taught me more about the essence of dedication, perseverance, and support than any other high school activity. Being a runner has shaped me into an independent individual who pushes through hardships and stops at nothing to achieve ambitions. Having been a part of a close knit distance running team all of high school, I have learned how to cheer on my teammates and how important support is to myself and others while on the pursuit of success. With all the knowledge and positive qualities that running has equipped me with, I feel more than ready to keep pushing myself to my limits and to face new milestones that I have yet to
Endurance through hard times, while still having a smile to offer others is an important way to look at sports and inevitably life. Multiple times in life I will encounter hardships. I may want to give up but, the need to persevere will always conquer all. When my team would lose a game it would have been easier to just give up; however, our coaches taught us that it just meant we needed to work harder. Putting in the extra effort would only make us a better team and better individuals.
Soccer has been a part of me since forever, I loved being on the field because it made me forget about all of my problems and just play. I started playing soccer in the second grade, it started off as just a sport, but it evolved into something else and became my passion. There are many rules and regulations involved with soccer. Such as, no tripping, foul conduct, or verbally or physically abusing the players. You also have to wear shin guards, soccer cleats, and comfortable shorts. There are many positions in soccer. For example, goalkeeper, defenders, center-back, full-back, wing-back, sweeper, and forwards, etc… Soccer has helped me with my fear of meeting new people. I recall waking up in the morning going out to practice and being
Life’s regrets, we all have them. Some ponder on the “what if’s” and wish we could do certain things over again while others take what they might have learned and use it to better themselves in the future. My one wish for a do over would revolved around my high school years and my track and field career. As a young freshman you often do not realize how much potential you have and take a less than serious approach to things knowing that you have another three years in which to improve. This was the case for myself. I made a decision to become a part of the track team and go out for pole-vaulting, after all I had an uncle who held the record at his high school for years and years, I mean - how hard could it be?
“Today, I will expand our operations beyond building robots by releasing this company’s first production car.” Loud cheers erupt as I announce this. “There are many new standards brought about by this car, including new technologies such as ETC, CHR, Tektronic, 4AWD, CVTs, UFE, and AWS. And here is the car itself!” Louder cheers erupt as the curtains are pulled back and the sleek futuristic body compels the audience to applaud. Elon Musk didn’t get as much attention when he released the Model S, I think. “You can know that our standards of excellence have been brought over from robots in your home to cars in your garage.”
