Perseverance and Grit Grit is a trait you can not live without, if you want to succeed in college . Angela Duckworth described grit as sticking with things over the very long term until they are mastered. Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals, grit is sticking with your future day in and day out not for a week or for the month but for years. working really hard to make that future a reality. Living life like it's a marathon not a sprint. The motivation of college students has been largely defined by the presence of grit and perseverance. By having Grit you are more likely to complete college. Grit helps when college is hard. It was even stated by Angela Duckworth that people who succeed in getting their associates degree are on average more gritty than those who succeed in getting their bachelor degree. Junior college is harder it takes a lot to graduate from a two year college versus a four year college. If you think about it a lot of students who are going to community colleges has to endure many variables; many of them are first generation students meaning they are the first in their face to go to college. Hanford quotes Angela Duckworth definition of ‘grit’ as , “‘sticking with things over the very long term until you master them.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford also quotes Duckworth’s article to then explain that the, “‘ gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon; his or her advantage is stamina.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford is thus explaining that grit is like perseverance; that a person who works hard can achieve as much as a person who has intelligence. He asserts that ‘grit’ (the passion and determination when pursuing long term goals) is becoming less persuasive and credible. Kohn states that grit can cause serious issues that have real consequences.
Success in life is related to the achievement of individual goals, short and long term. Success has historically been related to the measurable cognitive functions such as IQ and talent. However in more modern time’s there has been a shift towards the idea that developmental non-cognitive factors, such as grit and self-control, may have an impact on the level of success that an individual achieves. Non-cognitive factors such as grit and self-control are somewhat related but also distinct from one another, they may have an important connection to levels of success throughout the stages of life from childhood to adulthood.

There are many crucial elements college students must have in order to obtain success. The most valuable aspect of self-improvement for a college student to have starts with grit. In pages 49-104 of How Children Succeed, Tough continues to assert on the importance of non-cognitive abilities as predictors to success. He explicates on the role of motivation and grit, and how these character traits will lead to academic success. Throughout the readings, Tough introduces and substantiates his assertions with the studies of the M&M experiment, coding- speed test, and Duckworth’s Grit Scale. While I do agree with Tough analysis for the significance and positive outcomes associated with motivation and grit, I do not in particular agree with his conclusions on the M&M experiment. In essence, I agree with Tough that development in character is crucial for short and long term success. However, I also believe his argument to lean towards the theoretical aspect, and does not provide the reader the tools for a heuristic approach to modify or refine the listed traits.
I believe that I have the ability to work up to Stanly Early College standards. Determination, dedication, and desire are all qualities that I have. Determination, the strive to come out on top. The compulsion to reach your goal. For me, failure is not an option.

Duckworth’s alternative theory follows the words of Nietzsche: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Duckworth then paints this way of “tough love” parenting as a means to teach one’s children perseverance. They perceive ability as a malleable skill. Believing that hard work pays off in the end is more than an idea to motivate an individual, it is the difference between the ability to strive for success or the breaking point for an individual who believes in “I can’t.” An individual who has the desire for success and believes he or she can achieve anything has the ability to go far. Success for college and beyond is established through the vital skills of motivation, responsibility, and strength. To master all three items is to find success.
