Perks of being a wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is a beautifully written, critically acclaimed novel that gives a unique perceptive about those wild unpredictable days called growing up. This story is person versus self. It is evident in this novel that conflicts leads to personal growth for Charlie. After being introduced to drugs, meeting some of the best friends he may ever have had, and facing the death of his loved ones Charlie grow as a person.

The only true friends Charlie has ever had were his Aunt Helen and Michael. Both died before Charlie was 15.Entering high school Charlie had no friends and desperately craved any sort of social interaction. Coincidently this is around the time where he meets Sam and Patrick. “Normally I’m very shy, but Patrick seemed like the kind of guy you could just walk up to at a football game event though were three years younger and not popular” (19) Charlie acts against his own nature and introduces himself to Sam and Patrick before even establishing true friendship, just the thought of it has a positive effect on Charlie. “Sam went on to explain what she called the ‘trance’ the trance happens when you don’t focus on anything and the whole big picture allows and moves around” Sam is talking to Charlie about LSD. Already it’s becoming palpable that Charlie’s friends are not so good. Friendship for Charlie is like a double edged sword. His friend’s help him when he is going through trouble but some of the trouble he is in, he wouldn’t be in if it weren’t for his friends. In the novel drugs is always associated with coping with a bad situation. Initially that wasn’t Charlie’s reason for taking drugs but as the story progresses Charlie’s perception on drugs completely changes “I ate the brownies and they tasted a little weird but it was still a brownie, but I still liked it. This was not as an ordinary brownie. Since you’re older I think you know what kind of brownie it was” Charlie was not even aware of the drug he was taking but when he did realize, he wasn’t alarmed. In fact he continues to indulge in the drug use. Charlie disregards the effects of the drugs and only thinks of fitting in with his new friends “After a week of not talking to anyone I finally called Bob. He said he had a quarter ounce of pot left so I took some of my Easter money and bought it, I’ve been smoking it since” (139) As time passes on Charlie’s drug dependency increases.
