The Perks of Being a Wallflower was brought to screen in 2012 by author and director Stephen Chbosky. The movie is about a 15 year old adolescent named Charlie who is beginning high school with a little more baggage than the normal freshman. The viewer quickly discovers that Charlie’s best friend, Michael, committed suicide during May of their 8th grade school year and the viewer later learns that Charlie’s aunt Helen molested him as a child. Charlie begins school determined to make some new friends and is befriended by step siblings Patrick and Sam during the first week of school. The movie spans for Charlie’s entire freshman year and shows the struggles he has with relationships, bullying, risky behaviors, as well remnants from his past trauma. He has a lot in common with Sam and falls in love with her, but accidentally ends up in a relationship with another one of the members of their clique, Mary Elizabeth. His relationship with her ends poorly and he is exiled from the clique for a few weeks. Upon the school year ending, Charlie is faced with the harsh reality that his group of friends, including his love Sam, are all seniors and are all going on to college. Charlie has a mental breakdown, but is able to reconcile many of his past struggles with the help of a doctor and the support from his parents and siblings. bullying. To begin, the portrayal of cliques and crowds is very prominent throughout The Perks of Being a Wallflower. A clique is best described as an individual’s immediate circle of friends of which they have a lot in common with. Adolescents generally spend a great deal of time with these friends and share intimate details about their lives with these individuals. On the other hand, a crowd is considerably larger than a clique. A crowd is reputation based and may encapsulate multiple cliques. Adolescents within the same crowd may not ever speak to one another (Arnett, 2013).
The novel, “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower,” by Stephen Chbosky is an eye-opening story about a high school student named Charlie who has to overcome the horrors of his best-friend’s suicide. In doing so, he befriends two senior students named Patrick and Sam. Patrick and Sam go to parties, do drugs, and lead Charlie down a bad path. Charlie, the Martyr; Patrick, the Warrior; and Sam, the Innocent; are all unique in their own ways, and these uniquenesses form their archetypal personalities.
The movie The Breakfast Club is a perfect example of peer relationships in the adolescent society. It shows the viewer some of the main stereotypes of students in high school you have a jock, a nerd, the weirdo, a rebel, and a prep. Over the course of a Saturday detention the different types of peers learn a lot about one another by hearing what each one has done to get into Saturday detention as well as why they chose to do it.
Hughes is the writer and director of “The Breakfast Club” which was released in February 1985. Although this movie is almost 29 years old, it is still just as applicable to today’s society as it was then. Hughes is also known for other films of the same era which include, “Sixteen Candles”, “Pretty in Pink”, and “Ferris Buehler’s Day Off”. These films also feature the issues of teens, but their main focus is to be an entertaining story. They do not compare to the impact “The Breakfast Club” had, even though many of the same actors starred in these other films as well. Some may find it hard to believe that Ringwald and Hall were still in high school when they filmed this movie, while the other three “teen” actors were in their 20’s.

In one scene, Mr. Anderson is asked by Charlie why people stay with others who are wrong for them, speaking of Sam and her boyfriend, and he responds with his famous quote, “We accept the love we think we deserve.” That statement is very powerful and makes a lot of sense in the world of psychology. It is shown that many of the characters in the film accepted the love they thought they deserved whether it be Sam with her boyfriend, Patrick with Brad, or even Charlie with Mary Elizabeth. I will be analyzing the movie trailer developed for the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower. This movie is placed in present time, in the United States of America, in a medium sized city. Charlie, the main character, is an incoming freshman in High school who has no friends and ultimately is an outcast or “wallflower” in the beginning of the movie. We are introduced to his new found friends Sam and Patrick, two upperclassmen that “take Charlie in” and invite him to partake in their fun and carefree lifestyle that has labeled them the “misfit toys” in their world. Charlie struggles to adapt to the social structures of High School and his new friends at first but slowly develops into the individual he never knew he could be. Charlie becomes infatuated with Sam, his beautiful exotic new friend. When his new comrades are threatened, due to their adversity, by the “in” crowd, Charlie finds that he is braver than he had ever anticipated. The point of the story is not to learn how to become accepted, but to learn to accept yourself.

In the brokerage room, he sells penny stocks. Thanks to him being aggressive in his selling skills, he was able to make a profit. With the new income, he gives his wife a bracelet and she asked him why doesn’t he go after the people that can afford to lose money, not the middle-class people or lower income people. That is when he gets the idea to get a lot of young people and train them to become the best stock brokers.
The Wolf of Wall Street produced and directed by Martin Scorsese tells a story of Jordan Belfort, a stockbroker living a luxurious life on Wall Street. Due to greed and corruption, Jordan falls into a life of crime and abusive activities. Belfort made millions of dollars by selling customers “penny stocks” and manipulating the market through his company, Stratton Oakmont, before being convicted of any criminal activity (Solomon, 2013). Jordan reveals behaviours and impulses all humans have, however, on an extreme level. This movie illustrates “why ethics is another tool whose importance cannot be overstated” (Delaney, 2014). Without ethics and morality, individuals can never truly live an honest and happy life.
Chbosky understands the hype around his book and that people don't want his book to be known. He makes a great point in saying “ this moment will just be another story someday” this means that he knows people are making a big deal because how big the book is becoming. When the book dies down no one will care what the book even talked about because it was the past. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a book you know will never fail you. From the first lines it has your attention to the last word. The book helps you pass the hard times how I had mentioned. As a reader going through a hard time then you read the following line “I was very grateful to have heard it again. Because I guess we all forget sometimes. And I think everyone is special in their own way. I really do”(chbosky). This will catch your attention and you will feel better about yourself because he directly connects with the reader.
