Roughly five children die every day in the United States at the hands of an abuser (Child Help, 2012). Child abuse has been an everlasting problem in the United States, making it known as a perennial problem. A perennial problem is a problem that never seems to vanish. I came to the decision to use child abuse as my perennial problem due to the fact that no child, family, or community should have to endure the tragedies that happen as a result of abuse. Child abuse is defined as doing something or not doing something that ends in harm to a child or puts the child at risk (MedlinePlus, 2017). The child could experience improper brain development, learning disabilities, blindness, and anxiety. Child abuse is a downhill spiral when it comes to how it effects the family. Not only could a family member be abusing a child, but another family member could lie to save the abuser jail time. This will create an untrustworthy family atmosphere and tear families apart, sometimes for the better. This could be extremely hard on the abused individual and lead them to believe it is their fault and feel guilty for abandoning their family. A community that has child abuse will have long lasting consequences. The community will experience more people using medical services, homelessness, more criminal activities, drug abuse, and loss of community productivity. This center offers free counseling for abused children, Court Appointed Special Advocate Program or CASA, child abuse prevention education program, community awareness programs, and “Kids in Crisis” advocacy program. This organization effects the community by having child abuse prevention programs, so it is apart of the macrosystem portion of the human ecological model. In relation to the child abuse they advocate for child abuse awareness and children who have been abused.
The third organization is Family Resource Youth Service Centers in local schools. The youth service center is a safe place children can go to while at school to gain information and help if they are being abused at home. They offer counseling and care, and then they refer the child to health and social services. This organization directly affects the child making it part of the mesosystem.
