Everything has its risks, and there is a fine line, thinner than a tightrope, in deciding if those dangers are worth the possible benefits. An interesting perspective is seen in a poem that states, “Because how tragically ironic would it be/ To end up dead because of an overdose/ On the medication meant to help keep you alive” (Anonymous, 2014). Next, the changes slowly start to carve a place for themselves, and the symptoms are not as easy to ignore or hide from other. Then, after someone is swallowed whole, to the point where it seems too late, they might finally realize that they needed help a lot sooner. Escaping is not just wishful thinking anymore, it becomes a plan of life or death. If someone is able to get help and start to take antidepressants, sometimes it is not enough. Antidepressants provide an opportunity to for escape in more ways than one. While their main purpose is meant to help depression, sometimes that help comes too late, causing the person to listen to their suicidal thoughts and thus overdose on antidepressants. Sometimes the results of antidepressants will have the opposite effect that the original intention. In the article Depression: How effective are antidepressants? It states, “It is believed that these were rare side effects of antidepressants. Various studies suggest that teenagers consider suicide more often when taking [antidepressants] SSRIs or SSNRIs and also actually attempt to take their own lives more often” (Depression: How effective:” 2017). When taking medications it is almost a given that there will be side effects. However, in severe cases, certain side effects can almost be riskier than having depression in general. Even though an increase in suicidal thoughts is rare, they are not to be taken lightly.
