I chose to create a collage dedicated to the short story “Penny in The Dust” because personally, I believe that it was the most impactful short story out of the four short stories that we were expected to read and analyze. “Penny in The Dust” is a brief story about a boy and his father’s struggle to show affection in a traditional manner, which can either be shown physically, or vocally. Throughout the story, the boy, now an adult felt a sense of reminiscence while walking through a field which reminded him of the penny that his father gave him. I chose to do this project in a collage format because, I reckoned that it would have been the best method to show my understanding of the story. My choice to do the whole collage in black and white
owed to the fact that the short story was set in early to mid 20th century, North America. I showed a picture of a boy holding hands with his father to illustrate the boy’s feelings towards him when he was young. I included a man wearing a suit, representing the vest where his father kept the penny for all those years, following its misplacement. In the short story, it was mentioned that he kept the penny in his left vest pocket, where the heart is located. This is a sure sign that although his love and appreciation for his son went unspoken, he truly did care for him. I also included a photo of a heart and the penny both indicating his father’s hidden love for his son, which the son never really felt first hand, due to his father not knowing how to show affection. To make up for it, his father continued to teach the boy lessons indirectly and gave the boy the penny to signal his hidden affection for his son. And lastly, I added a photo of a path in a field to show a visual representation of the setting in the beginning of the story, when the boy, now an adult, walked with his sister the evening before his father’s funeral.
It gave the idea, and a clear understanding of what its discussing. It led me to imagine a dilapidated room, with elderly people eating, and using mismatched copper utensils. Their body physically there, but easily seen in their eyes , their minds are somewhere far away. I could see and feel the pearls when I read the line, “ Full of beads and receipts.” I could see them eating the beans, and imagine their back room filled with objects containing their memories. “ This old yellow pair,” and Rememberings with twinklings and tinges,” inspired the imagery of an old couple sitting together and reminiscing about their
The main idea in the story “ bullhead by Leigh Allison Wilson” is a reflection about stories. They might be true or false depend on the conditions and people beliefs. Wilson talks about the love of life in interesting manner. In bullhead the government officially announced to build dams over the state. The hometown of the mother was on this way and by that time many people lost their homes; they announced everyone to shift from their homes. The boy that she loved, made his love and went to Texas with his family and she never saw him again. Later on, she used to go to river and drop penny While she is doing so she a made fifty pennies for fifty years. She imagined, by throwing the pennies, as her love ghost soul would showered it. She imagined
Last but not least, O’Connor confirms that even a short story is a multi-layer compound that on the surface may deter even the most enthusiastic reader, but when handled with more care, it conveys universal truths by means of straightforward or violent situations. She herself wished her message to appeal to the readers who, if careful enough, “(…)will come to see it as something more than an account of a family murdered on the way to Florida.”
Emmett's father once stumbled upon of one of Emmett’s painting. The painting depicted a front of a house in an empty picture. It had shallow wooden stairs that led to an open door. Inside laid a crumbled object and a naked heel of a person. Emmett’s Father was entranced by this picture, thinking of ways to enrich the picture. As Emmett came into to room, his father told him that he was an artist. Emmett replied to his compliment by taking the picture and with a corn knife, “cut the picture to shreds.” He proceeded
Can you imagine living in harsh dust, losing your mother and brother, and barely recognizing the man, sitting in front of you, is your father? In the novel, Out of the Dust, the author, Karen Hesse, reveals the theme of the novel is loss and grief. Karen Hesse unfolds the theme by using messages throughout the book to emphasize the hardship and power of the Dust Bowl.
Within every story or poem, there is always an interpretation made by the reader, whether right or wrong. In doing so, one must thoughtfully analyze all aspects of the story in order to make the most accurate assessment based on the literary elements the author has used. Compared and contrasted within the two short stories, “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, and John Updike’s “A&P,” the literary elements character and theme are made evident. These two elements are prominent in each of the differing stories yet similarities are found through each by studying the elements. The girls’ innocence and naivety as characters act as passages to show something superior, oppression in society shown towards women that is not equally shown towards men.
Eudora Welty’s short story “A Worn Path” emphasizes the unselfish love that inspires courage, sacrifice, and love through her use of symbolism.
Updike, John. “A&P”. The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction. Eds. R.V. Cassill and Richard Bausch. Shorter Sixth Edition. New York: W.W. Norton and Company, 2000. 864 - 869.
A short story is designed to capture the reader's attention by telling a well thought-out fictional tale in only a few scenes. A good example is "Paul's Case" by Willa Cather. "Paul's Case" is a very interesting story written around the 1900's about a young man's last few months of life. This essay will explain in deeper detail Paul's reasons on why he leaves home, what are his driving forces, what are his motivations, and why he kill himself.
In this short story Marigolds by author Eugenia Collier the narrator, Lizabeth, has chosen to retell a story as an adult reflecting on a significant incident from her childhood. In this story the main character Lizabeth lives during the great depression and describes her experiences like when she says “the brilliant splash of sunny yellow against the dust” (paragraph 1). This describes the marigolds and there beauty against the brown, dry, and ugly ground that they had during this time. I also think they added this because they wanted to really make shore that the reader could really understand how much the marigolds stand out. During this time of age with Lizabeth her father was the leader in the home and I could tell that because
In this experiment, the mass of copper and zinc is needed in order to receive its percent composition. To start off the experiment, the penny is from 1982 since the article was based off the 1982 pennies. The penny’s mass is weighed before the copper is scraped off the surface. By taking the mass beforehand, the total mass of the penny is used in the percent composition calculation. Also, scraping off the bits of the copper will expose the zinc to the hydrochloric acid since the zinc will react to the acid. The penny and the acid will be left in a beaker overnight to give the reactants more time to react. The reactants will form into aqueous, leaving only copper as a solid in the acid because the copper won’t react with the hydrochloric acid
Zora Neal Hurston's short story, "Gilded Six-Bits", is a story about a young, happily married African-American couple in the South. Their love and marriage are tested by infidelity and the hurt of broken trust. In the end, though, the couple's love wins out over the pain. "Gilded Six-Bits" provides a narrative that shows that one's love for another can help them overcome anything. By discussing the symbols and characters involved in the story, such as Saturday afternoons, Otis D. Slemmons, and the titular gilded six-bit coin, the reader can see a theme of love and forgiveness in this story.
The story of my history as a writer is a very long one. My writing has come full circle. I have changed very much throughout the years, both as I grew older and as I discovered more aspects of my own personality. The growth that I see when I look back is incredible, and it all seems to revolve around my emotions. I have always been a very emotional girl who feels things keenly. All of my truly memorable writing, looking back, has come from experiences that struck a chord with my developing self. This assignment has opened my eyes, despite my initial difficulty in writing it. When I was asked to write down my earliest memory of writing, at first I drew a blank. All of a sudden, it became very clear to me, probably because it had some childhood trauma associated with it.
This short story is very short, but there was something about it that made me
Throughout the course of this class, there have been many assignments involving short stories, however, Hands by Sherwood Anderson is a short story that I found intriguing. Hands is a short story about a man who was an educator who loved his student and his career. Later in his career he was wrongfully accused of molesting a young boy and as a punishment he was severely beaten by the boy’s father and run out of town. Sherwood Anderson published this short story in 1919 and in my opinion wrote a story that evokes every component in which a short story should contain. According to Wikipedia a short story is generally written in narrative prose and falls under 7,500 words, making short story writing an art because it must contain so many components to create and complete story.
