This article, written by Gary Varvel from USA Today Network, describes the situations of adultery. These events set in mind the “Pence Rule”, which is meant to protect the people’s hearts and their marriages from committing such actions. Many people acknowledged this, but many opposed. Although there are many advantages, there are also many disadvantages; but it seems that the detriments outweigh the benefits of the Vice President’s rule. Mr. Pence does not dine alone with any woman other than his wife or attend events where alcohol is served without his wife by his side. This factor shows that the Pence rule is purely personal. If Pence cannot eat alone with a woman, it must be because when he sees a woman across a table, she is not viewed
In his book, A New Deal for the American People, Roger Biles analyzes the programs of the New Deal in regards to their impact on the American society as a whole. He discusses the successes and failures of the New Deal policy, and highlights the role it played in the forming of American history. He claims that the New Deal reform preserved the foundation of American federalism and represented the second American Revolution. Biles argues that despite its little reforms and un-revolutionary programs, the New Deal formed a very limited system with the creation of four stabilizers that helped to prevent another depression and balance the economy.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary Democracy is a form of government by the people; especially: rule of the majority(Webster). This is what the United States is represented as, and this is based on the United States Constitution from which the United states draws all legal powers. In Robert Dahls book How democratic Is the American Constitution? He challenges this idea by trying to appeal to his readers in a way that they may view the United States Constitution in a different light. Dahl does this by pointing out flaws that the Constitution has and, draws on facts based on the other democracies around the world that the United States is compared too. He points out how many democratic ideas and innovations have a occurred since the conception of the American Constitution yet it has only adopted some of those idea.
The constitutional right of gay marriage is a hot topic for debate in the United States. Currently, 37 states have legal gay marriage, while 13 states have banned gay marriage. The two essays, "What’s Wrong with Gay Marriage?" by Katha Pollitt and "Gay "Marriage": Societal Suicide" by Charles Colson provide a compare and contrast view of why gay marriage should be legal or not. Pollitt argues that gay marriage is a constitutional human right and that it should be legal, while Colson believes that gay marriage is sacrilegious act that should not be legal in the United States and that “it provides a backdrop for broken families and increases crime rates” (Colson, pg535). Both authors provide examples to support their thesis. Katha Pollitt provides more relevant data to support that gay marriage is a constitutional right and should be enacted as law in our entire country, she has a true libertarian mindset.

In his book, The Voting Wars, Richard Hasen argues that parties involved in election reform issues generally fall into one of two groups: one focused on removing any potential fraudulent votes, and the other focused on expanding voter access so as to not exclude any potential votes. Hasen works to show that most election litigation stems from this dichotomy. With the former camp is usually occupied by conservatives and the latter by progressives (though it really depends on who is winning), Hasen seems to think that the problem is this partisanship in general, and even though statistically he seems to place more blame on Republicans since 2000, Democrats are not spared his accusations. He cites examples of tactics used by both parties in campaigns that range from basic advertisements, to identification laws, to downright polling-place intimidation. But does the amount of actual election litigation and any resulting changes (or lack thereof) match the overall number of charges of fraud? Can Hasen back up his claims? After reading this book, the confidence one may have had in the legitimacy of election litigation (and the voting process as a whole) may certainly be called into question. While some instances of fraud can
Stearns’ book is a compilation of thirty essays that according to their authors speak the truth about the problems of American culture. According to Stearns, the authors didn’t write the book to please their readers, but rather to make them understand the problems with American society (vi). The essays are written on a variety of themes such as problems with the city, politics, education, the law, the family, sex, business, science and philosophy. Although these essays concerned diverse subjects, they had three recurring themes. Firstly, all of the essays incorporated the theme of hypocrisy. According to Stearns, people pf the 1920’s didn’t practice the moral codes that they preached for fear of damaging their social status. Secondly, all the essays showed that America was no longer homo...
Defendants who want to die, or “volunteers”, as they are frequently named, pose unique difficulties for the criminal justice system. The first person put to death in the post Furman era, Gary Gilmore, was a volunteer. At Gilmore’s trial, adversary proceeding were conducted in both the guilt and punishment stages. At the appellate level, however, Gilmore insisted that he did not want to appeal to the Utah Supreme Court and desired to be put to death instantly. Many other volunteers have followed this since Gilmore’s death was carried out. Some have attempted to forgo court procedures at the appellate court level, like
A beloved member of Belleville West staff was tragically murdered this month. Sunday, October 2nd, Football Coach and Science Teacher, Robert Flake, was found in the Performing Arts Center of Belleville West High School. Police and investigators do not have any suspects, or know of a clear motive; they do believe that this was an isolated incident, but have upped security.
To truly understand my “mental story” in its entirety, it is important to look back upon my mentality when I chose to take AP Government and also what I previously knew before my first day of class. Politics was never my subject of choice. When I toured Georgetown and almost chose to pursue it, I convinced myself that the political scene and Washington D.C was not all that interesting to me. However, as the political scene began to somehow consistently appear on nearly every television channel, I decided that government and politics were areas that I might find interest in. As a naïve sophomore, I decided I would dedicate my senior humanities to studying government because I lacked a great amount of knowledge. The information I did know was limited, however. I knew Political figures are in a constant pursuit of power, and that democracy is the rule by the people. On the other
In the past, the French government granted certain French citizens capabilities that no other citizens had. One of those abilities was the right to contract polygamous marriages. She recognized that the granting of these rights create a snowball effect for more group-exclusive rights. She writes, “In other cases, groups have claimed rights to govern themselves, to have guaranteed political representation, or to be exempt from certain generally applicable laws.” The immunity from certain generally applicable laws, for instance, provide a loophole for men to engage in self-interested practices which may include a means of controlling women. In fact, Moller states that “In polygamous cultures, too, men readily acknowledge that the practice accords with self-interest and is a means of controlling women.” Such practices are both immoral and unfair to women as a collective whole and provide a reason for the support of universal human rights and equality of all individuals as
In recent discussions of marriage and relationships styles, a controversial issue has been non-monogamous relationships in American society. On the one hand, some argue, that monogamy should be considered the only valid option. From this perspective, many people feel that non-monogamous relationships are immoral, and a threat to family and society. On the other hand, however, there is the argument that the expectations monogamy sets f...
Those who hear the name of William Penn may know him as the founder of Pennsylvania, or even recognize him on the Quaker Oat's logo. But this man is more than a another governmental leader or the face of a successful breakfast brand. Penn is, in my opinion, a figure to be admired both in politics and in the Christian faith and I argue that he is highly worthy for the 11th House of The Kings College dawning his name. Although it just so happens that my family is related to William Penn, I am not offering him as an option only because of that fact, but because I discovered his humble and dedicated life to God and people and cannot help but admire this quintessential Christian leader.
Recently, people have been arguing with respect to the definition of marriage. To get married is a very important event for almost everyone. Particularly for women, marriage and giving a birth could be the two major events of their lives. Andrew Sullivan and William Bennett are authors who are arguing about homosexual marriage. Sullivan believes in same-sex marriage because he thinks everyone has a right to marry. On the other hand, Bennett speaks out against Sullivan’s opinion. Bennett makes a claim that marriage is between a man and a woman structuring their entire life together. Both authors’ opinions differ on same-sex marriage. Nevertheless, their ideas are well recognized.
The first form of adultery is Accidental Infidelity. This can happen to the more careless person, but at the same time, to the person whose values and commitments are tenuous. They lack self-control and respect for both themselves and their spouse. Any situation where they are left alone with the opposite sex is an opportunity for an “accident” to occur. It was shocking to find out that most cases of infidelity occur with couples who are less than twenty -five years old, one would have thought early marriages where happy and care free (figure one).
In this article the author’s purpose is to persuade readers, specifically the Lebanese citizens that marital rape is like any kind of rape. She lists several countries that consider marital rape a criminal deed, unlike Lebanon whose culture and religious authorities have made it seem a very normal issue. Also, the author shows that Lebanon’s regulations and rules don’t give equal rights to both males and females. Finally, she calls for all Lebanese people to participate in the upcoming protest against rape including marital rape in order to change the law that protects it.
