“...an individual with [pedophilia] has the same ingrained attraction that a heterosexual female may feel towards a male, or a homosexual feels towards their same gender.” (Johnston, Pg. 1). Pedophilia - “the fantasy or act of sexual activity with children who are generally age 13 years or younger” (American Psychiatric Association, p.1) - a word that holds multiple negative connotations, is often seen as aberrant thought process or behavior, and is under debate as to whether or not it’s a sexual orientation. But can it be considered a sexual orientation? As a member of the LGBT community, this issue has surfaced among us and shocked the majority. Pedophilia is under consideration for being a sexual orientation, however, it completely …show more content…
It may relate to the gender of a said child, but, it’s going beyond the meaning of sexual orientation. The pedophilic person in question may be heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual but that doesn’t correspond to the person's sexual interest being solely in children. As the person under observation would be attracted to a male, female, or non-binary genders, going into the depths of what age group or the features they’re attracted to would be under the category of a fixation or fetish rather than a sexual orientation. A fetish - “Something, such as a material object or nonsexual part of the body, that arouses sexual desire and may become necessary for sexual gratification” (The American Heritage® Medical Dictionary) - relates more to the specific item or characteristic under the sexual …show more content…
In other words, an individual with [pedophilia] has the same ingrained attraction that a heterosexual female may feel towards a male, or a homosexual feels towards their same gender.” (Johnston, Pg. 1). This argument suggests that in the same way that a homosexual is attracted to the same gender and cannot change it, that a pedophile goes under the same category within sexual orientation. However, I strongly disagree. The reason being for my disagreement is that using sexual orientation to describe something has to do with what’s between that person's legs, NOT the features they are attracted
When the authors begin to discuss these children as being sexual individuals it make its somewhat difficult to read as in society we often view children as innocent, vulnerable and in need of protection from adults. However the authors make it clear that children are not asexual, they do experience arousal and engage in sexual practices. This from of adult understanding still remains taboo in s...
When a late adolescent or adult is primarily or exclusively attracted to a minor child sexually they become diagnosed with the psychiatric disorder pedophilia. Mostly a person is not diagnosed with this disorder unless they have had this attraction for six months or longer. This attraction can be in the form of fantasies which are sexually arousing to the perpetrator, or the urge to engage in sexual activities with a minor child. In addition, in order to be diagnosed the molester will have to have acted on these urges or suffered from some type of distress, which will be result from having these feelings. Also the molester should be at least sixteen years old with the victim being younger than them by a minimum of five years.
This study is about whether there is a correlation between physical and sexual abuse in adolescents becoming homosexual. Throughout past research there has been no direct correlation in stating is does cause adolescents to become homosexual. The event of someone changing their sexual identity is when they gone through some traumatic situation in their life. The tests we ran for this study are The Life Experience Questionnaire, The Lesbian Internalized Homophobic Scale, and The Acceptance and Action Questionnaire. This study is done to prove there is a correlation between physical and sexual abuse equaling homosexuality.
Our text describes pedophilia as a person who “gains sexual gratification by watching, touching, or engaging in sexual acts with prepubescent children, usually 13 years old or younger” (Comer, 2013, p. 411). The movie, The Woodsman describes the story of a convicted sex offender recently released from prison. Walter, depicted by Kevin Bacon shed some insight into the motivations and thought processes that a sex offender, specifically a pedophile might have.
Sexual orientation is a term used to describe a person’s physical, sexual, and romantic attraction to another person, whether they be Male or Female. The term is relatively new and the idea of having a homosexual identity has only been around for one-hundred years at the most (APA).
This theory asserts that pedophiles see themselves as children, and in turn feel most comfortable with children (Batrol & Batrol, 2014, p. 394). McaPhil and colleagues (2013) found that high emotional congruence with children was most strongly associated with sexual pre-occupation in which sex was used as a means to cope with negative emotions as well as deviant sexual interests and cognitions that support child molestation. Loneliness and social rejection were also found to be associated with emotional congruence with children. In support of previous theories, emotional congruence with children was also associated with problems in sexual self-regulation. Moreover, Stinson et al. (2008) found that self-regulatory deficiency was a significant causal predictor of both sexual deviance and anti-social
Also note that I am using the term ‘child molester’ almost exclusively. This is because there is a difference between a pedophile and a child molester. Pedophilia is a psychological disorder in which a sexually mature adult is attracted, either preferentially or exclusively, to pre-pubescent childr...
Pedophilia is a medical diagnosis, which is defined as a psychiatric disorder in adults or older adolescents, ranging from ages 16 and older. Pedophilia is characterized by a primary or exclusive sexual interest in prepubescent children, unusually ages 13 and under. The victim of a pedophile is usually at least five years younger in the case of adolescent pedophiles. The word pedophilia derives from the Greek word: παῖς (paîs), meaning "child," and φιλία (philla) meaning "friendly love" or "friendship. This literal meaning has been altered toward sexual attraction in modern times, under the titles "child love" or "child lover," by pedophiles who uses symbols and codes to identify their preferences.
Paraphilia has evolved as a term generally referenced as sexually deviant behavior to a broader term and divided into a disorder by the DSM-5. Paraphilia’s are often misconstrued as sexually deviant behavior that is misunderstood by the general public. In this paper, I will attempt to have a better grasp of what a paraphilia is, how to treat paraphilia from a therapeutic standpoint and attempt to discern when a paraphilia may need additional referrals and/or treatment. This paper will also examine the difference between a paraphilia that may be treated through cognitive behavioral therapy and paraphilic disorders, in which distress is found and may need further intensive treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy is one method of psychotherapy
What is sexual orientation? This is a term that has been coined to define all of us. It is how one defines themselves, who they are in this world, it is their being. Sexual orientation is a “multidimensional and individually flexible composition of sexual and emotional attraction to ones own sex.” (Mahler & Mundle, 2015, p.461) Choosing who one is, who they are emotionally and physically attracted to is their own choice, however the reality of things is that its not just our own choice.
“Homosexuality” is basically the romantic and sexual attraction between individuals of same sex specifically male. The female homosexuality is often referred to as lesbianism; the nickname “gay” is frequently used as a general name for both “homosexual” and “lesbian” alternatively "Homosexuality." Merriam-Webster.com. Merriam-Webster, n.d. Web. 7 Mar. 2014. . This behavior has been approved of, encouraged, tolerated or banned depending on the period of time and culture.
This section also emphasizes that gender is a socially constructed cultural norm and that sexual orientation is not a dichotomous variable. Many people believe you can only be straight or gay (e.g. heterosexual or homosexual), but there are various levels of bisexuality on the sexual orientation continuum. For example, some people are more interested in one sex, but still are open to both. Also, some people can identify as pansexual meaning that they are not limiting themselves to one sexual choice and love all people no matter what sexual orientation, biological sex, and gender identity that the individual may be (e.g. they move along the continuum). This section did a nice job in explaining all the factors to consider when looking at sexual orientation, biological sex, and gender identity differences.
In today’s society things are being expressed and experienced at younger ages, than ever before in our time. Children and teenagers are discovering their sexuality at very early ages. Sexuality is the discovering of who you are and what makes you different from everybody else.
Sexual orientation is a key aspect in any person’s life. The way of life for a gay, lesbian, and all sexual minorities are drastically different than those who are heterosexual. The critical time period for sexual development is in the early stages of childhood. Although childhood is a critical period, many studies have been conducted ranging from those in their twenties and thirties (Carver, Perry, & Egan, 2004). Storms (1981) believes that the content of one’s sexual fantasies that arouses the stimuli of their erotic orientation. Storms (1981) also stated that sexual orientation is a combination of social development and sexual development that takes place during an individual’...
In today’s day in age, different sexualities and gender identities are quickly becoming more accepted in mainstream society. Despite this change, there are many people who believe that having a different sexual orientation or gender identity is a choice that is frowned upon. In order to refute this belief, research and biology of the brain is necessary. Researching the brain on the basis of sexuality is a fairly new topic of discussion because it is somewhat difficult and confusing. This paper will explore the different identities of gender, sex and sexual orientation and the main biological reasons behind these. There is also some validity of different sexual orientations and identities through the evidence of sexual disorders like Klinefelter’s and Turner’s Syndrome and gender dysphoria.
