The clients in our group are four children with mild sensory integration deficits associated with SPD. They are attending an outpatient rehabilitation facility to address deficits in auditory and vestibular stimulation. This is our fourth meeting together, so we understand their strengths and weaknesses, and we also know they all have a passion for the television show Paw Patrol. Each individual shares a common low-threshold sensory input when they come in contact with an environment that has loud auditory noises and excessive vestibular input. Common symptoms seen with children that have difficulty processing vestibular inputs, and children within this group, include the symptoms of vertigo, imbalance, and dizziness (Rine & Christy, 2016). …show more content…
Lauren and her friends love Paw Patrol and her favorite character is Marshall since he tries to rescue and help people. She also loves to throw the ball and play on the playground at recess with her friends, but has noticed she struggles more than her friends on the playground and falls down frequently. This is beginning to upset Lauren. Lauren has also realized that she does not like as loud of music and noise as her other friends, and this has caused her to miss out on going to the movies and get togethers with her friends to watch Paw Patrol. However, Lauren realizes that the smell of lavender and dimmed lighting helps decrease some of her anxiety when she is faced with the noises and is upset from falling. So, Lauren becomes frustrated when overstimulated and has a low-threshold when addressed with auditory and vestibular, but is determined during therapy to master these …show more content…
She loves Paw Patrol, a tv-show about puppies rescuing others, and her favorite character is Chase as he has the skills of a police officer, like Nikki’s mother who works for the police. Even though she is proud of her mom being a hero, Nikki becomes temporarily distracted when she hears loud sirens because she has a low-threshold for auditory inputs. Additionally, Nikki enjoys playing games with her two older siblings, but finds she feels as though objects are moving even when standing still and feels slight unbalanced after participating in games that involve climbing up ladders or standing up suddenly. While this lack of balance and vertigo symptoms make her feel stressed, she has realized that the smell of lavender and the sight of dim lights have helped lessen her stress. Once she uses these olfactory and visual inputs to calm herself when faced with activities that include loud noises or disruptions in motion, she is able and willing to engage in the once challenging activities. Nikki is also a quick learner and will pick up these positive coping skills to help in future activities, though she may need a few initial reminders to use the coping skills to calm herself. Overall, Nikki is determined to complete the activity and willing to help remind other members about calming skills when they all become anxious by loud noises or

“A dog is not a thing. A thing is replaceable. A dog is not. A thing is disposable. A dog is not. A thing does not have a heart. A dog’s heart is bigger than any “thing” you can ever own.” -Elizabeth Parker. According to the ASPCA, a puppy mill can be defined as “a large-scale commercial dog breeding facility where profit is given priority over the well-being of the dogs” (Puppy Mills 1). Dogs are more than just items that are sold for profit, they are part of many people’s families. The way dogs are being treated in the mills is not the way one would want someone in your family to be treated. Because puppy mills do not care for the animal’s health, wellbeing, or safety they should be banned federally.
Upon arrival, the B.A.T. clinical team greeted Mrs. Hoogerwerf and Cody at the door. Cody responded “Hi” in high pitched voice, that sounded similar to Mickey Mouse. Mom reported that Cody’s high pitched Mickey Mouse voice occurs on a daily basis, clinical team suggested this behavior was a verbal stem. Cody’s elder brother was also present during the visit and greeted the clinical team. Mrs. Hoogerwerf directed the team to the family room. Then Cody went to his movement room. Cody’s movement room is in what once was the family garage, in the room has a ball pit, a couch, TV, hundreds of Disney movies, and hammock like swing. Mrs. Hoogerwerf, added that Cody goes to his movement room after school, to relax. Cody sat in the movement room with mom and the clinical team for about 20 minutes. During this time, we did Cody’s Thomas the Train puzzle and looked at Cody’s vast collection of videos’. Hoogerwerf reported that Cody takes down all his video’s every night and re-stacks them, it’s a ritual for him. Soon Cody covered his ears and then twirled his red scarf in his view point and he fixated on it with his eyes (visual stem). Mom then suggested that Cody becomes overstimulated by too many people talking and will cover his ears. In sum, Cody was able to sit and attend to puzzle for five minutes and complied with cleaning up puzzle pieces. Reportedly, Cody likes to clean up.
Mark started losing his hearing when he was about six or seven years old. This was manifested in confusion in music class, misunderstanding the words that the choir was singing, and discombobulation in noisy rooms. Eventually, it was noted that Mark’s hearing was deteriorating.
The grizzly bear trophy hunt is an issue regarding the citizens of Canada who immorally hunt and kill grizzly bears for pride, thrill, and trophy. Many people question whether this is morally acceptable as hunters kill without a conscience. Grizzly bears are vital to Canada’s environment as they are essential to maintaining a healthy ecosystem. As keystone species, they regulate prey, disperse seeds of plants, and aerate soil to maintaining forest health. Due to the vulnerability and over-hunting of grizzly bears, Pacific Wild and many other non-profit organizations, are working to protect wildlife in British Columbia, especially the grizzly bear habitat.
Once a week, Ms. Neiman has an occupational therapist visit our nonverbal student and our student with autism. Occupational therapist uses special equipment to help children with developmental disabilities, they help students develop and improve the skills needed for daily living. The occupational therapist uses techniques that work the children’s brain, for the nonverbal student since she is at a lower learning level she is teaching her to match colors and unscrew lids. For the student with autism, she is teaching him to tie knots and how to properly draw shapes. She removes the obstacles for the children by supplying the students with the necessary specific help needed in the areas in which the students are lacking or not doing well. One of the gestures Ms. Neiman wanted the nonverbal student to learn was, “I want more”. In trying to do so, she contacted the speech therapist for her input. The speech therapist found a device where she could record her voice saying “I want more” and the student could press the button when trying to relay that message. Ms. Neiman tried the device for about a month and she realized the student was not responding to the button. She removed trying to teach the student how

Service dogs are a low risk treatment, that can replace dangerous medication and expensive devices. For a purebred service dog is $20,000, however there are non profit organizations that provide service dogs at a much lower cost, but there is usually a long wait list (“Costs”). ASDA (Autism Service Dogs of America) sets a donation goal of $13,500 for every approved family, which is always achieved. Another option is buying the dog from a breeder and paying for the training and accessories. If a puppy is purchased from a dog breeder for around $2,500, in two years time the dog would have costed around $5,200 dollars. The rest of the $ 2,700 comes from vet bills, service gear, training expenses, food, treats, and toys. (“Service”) Getting a dog from a rescue center will cost about the same amount because usually vet bills and training expenses are incrases. However in the long run the owner is most likely to spend more money on a rescue dog, because they often have more issues, physically and mentally which cause them to wear out faster. There is no health insurance that cover service animals. Service dogs however do replace the nasty side effects of some medication, and devices that won't provide companionship. Although the average hearing aid costs $4,000, hearing aides need replaced as the person grows, and need repairs as well, putting the total
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
In 2017, an innocent passenger named Marlin Jackson was mauled by a lab mix on a Delta flight. The dog was sitting in the lap of the man next to Jackson. Trapped by the window, Jackson was attacked in the face two times by the dog, resulting in facial wounds that required twenty-eight stitches. In the last few years, the popularity of emotional support animals continues to grow.
Have dogs always been cute and cuddly? Actually, they have not always been how they are today. All dogs used to be big bad wolves. Scientist has found that all dogs have descended from the grey wolf. They converted into dogs because the wolves came closer and closer to humans. It took a very long time for the wolves to alter to cute cuddly dogs. After the wolves had pups, the pups grew up around humans and grew closer and less ferocious to humans, so the pups were more comfortable with people and that we could hunt with them and use them as pets later. Therefore, the relationship between dogs and humans has changed tremendously over time.
Throughout Shrek 2 many modern day brands and the celebrity culture we have cultivated are obviously being parodied and mocked. During the movie, when the Fairy Godmother picked the King up to have an talk she had the driver of the flying carriage stop at Friars Fat Boy. Here the place imitates a fast food place such as Mcdonalds, even including a mockery of their famous Kid’s meal with the Medieval Meal. Though in place of the included toy it had a battle ax in its place. Later on there is a red carpet showing being hosted by Medieval Entertainment Television for people arriving at Fiona’s ball. This is a direct reference to E!’s annual coverage of Red Carpet for award shows. The movie segment is even hosted by the late Joan Rivers while the
There are at least seventeen species of macaws, and several of the species are in danger of being killed in the rainforest. Most macaws cost over one thousand dollars to have them as pets. Many macaws are illegal to trap or kill in the rain forest. Sadly, a lot of people do capture them from the rainforest for pets so they do not have to buy them. The rain forest homes that have so much macaws living in them are dying or getting captured at a very high speed.

My father knelt down and kissed my forehead as he said, “Don’t worry, Princess, Mommy will….Oh here she is now!” I sprang from my warm, sheltered seat and sprinted to the front window as quickly as my tiny legs could move. My fingers grasped the long, wooden windowsill and my little pug nose pressed against the window pain. My breath delivered a frosty appearance on the glass as my eyes strained to see my mother step out of her car. My toes ached with pain as I fought to stay in view with the outside world.
