My definition of courage is someone who goes out of their way to do something good. Firefighters have given their lives to save millions of people, so they are extremely brave. A person who I think is courageous is Patrick Kane, my nanny’s husband, who is a firefighter. I have known him for 7 years. He has been a firefighter for almost thirty years and is currently the fire chief. His son is also a firefighter. Patrick Kane is the most courageous person in my life because he has been in many difficult situations and is not scared of danger. One of the reasons why Patrick Kane is the most courageous person in my life is because he has experienced difficult situations. When I asked him what his definition of courage was, he said, “A quality deep down inside me that enables me to face difficulties, danger, and pain without withdrawing, changing my mind, or running away.” This means that you should not run away from difficult situations, just because they bother or scare …show more content…
This was such a difficult situation, and he still showed courage by caring for the surviving family members, even though it saddened him. If I was in this situation, I would be overcome with grief, and doing my job would be hard. This is one of the reasons why I think he is courageous. Another reason I think Patrick Kane is the most courageous person in my life is because he is not scared of danger. An example of this is when I asked him about his most difficult situation(as a firefighter). He answered that twenty years ago, he was walking into a burning house, where the fire was towards the back. The stove was on fire because the dad fell asleep while making popcorn. He and his lieutenant crawled on the floor, when the lieutenant said that the fire hydrant was
Some hockey enthusiasts say that Patrick Kane “is an elite hockey player, but more importantly a true winner” (“Patrick Kane Quotes”). People can take that in differently some think he can be a true winner because of his performance on ice. However, it could also mean how he could have a true heart to those fans out there who do not have the money to see him play in the United Center or that they are too sick to watch it for that matter, which makes him the true winner. Kaner is able to be a role model for these kids whether he is scoring goals for the Hawks or by spending time his time in charity events. Patrick Kane is able to make a living by playing the sport he loves and to spread that love to others out there whether he is on or off the
There is a difference between courage and craziness. The definition of courage means “the ability to do something that frightens one”. The definition of crazy means “mentally deranged, especially as manifested in a wild or aggressive way”. The story of Chris McCandless is an interesting one as he heads off into the wilderness of Alaska by himself, with hardly any supplies. Unfortunately, McCandless’ journey ended on his 113th day in the wild. Many scholars believe that instead of being courageous or that he also he had a split personality which caused him to be deranged from the reality of the real world. It is possible that being crazy or courageous could have a connection. Chris McCandless demonstrated a
true bravery to Murray. Not all acts of bravery are to save other sometimes it’s about saving
According to dictionary.com “Courage means the equality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, and pain without fear.” Mr.Frank showed courage because in the play when there was a thief in the Annex Mr.Frank was the only one who volunteered to go downstairs to see if it was a thief and that was very courageous of him. Another person who also showed courage was Miep because while the residents
One of the best explanations of courage is the following by Maya Angelou: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtues with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Her explanation summarizes all that courage can lead you to who you are in life. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, despite disapproval, pain, fear, uncertainty, or intimidation. Courage is challenging what is normal. Courage is giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Courage is using whatever power available to educate the world about injustice. Courage is following your heart even when the path is not known. Courage is trying after failing.
In the literary work, Speaking of Courage, Tim O’Brien highlights the trying struggle of a post-war solider attempting desperately to integrate himself back into American society. Paul Berlin’s trials and tribulations exemplify the “dominance of a citizen culture in the United States,” as mentioned by Dr. Decker in class. American society does not allow for the soldiers we have sent off to fight to return as warriors.
There are various ways people define what courage is. It might be public speaking or saving a life. Many people believe courage is risking a life to save another. Soldiers are also considered a synonym to courage. However, not everyone saves a life or delivers a speech daily. Still, what is the real definition of courage? In the book To kill a Mockingbird By Harper Lee courage is,” When you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see through no matter what.” (Lee pg.149) This quote defines what real courage is. Mrs Dubose, Boo Radley and Atticus displays courage and teaches others a lesson of how to be courageous in a civilised determined way. They all knew they had a high chance of losing to their goals yet, they still went at it with their all never giving into the pressure.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
I define courageous as fearless , bold, Brave, and heroic - someone who has set an example for the others around them. Someone that - no matter what the punishment, will stand up for him/her self and others.Someone who will do whatever they can to be who they want to be and stand up for what they believe in. Someone who I think is courageous is Dian Fossey.
Has anyone ever shown bravery in your life? Bravery is someone who’s not afraid to step up to the challenge, Like in the book The Hobbit Bilbo shows that quite a few times, and an article about a cop saving his partner. Bravery is someone who has courage and is not afraid of something others might be afraid of , anyone can be brave and it can happen when you least expect it.
When discussing whether or not free will is possible, it is clear that everyone has an opinion about it. Many of these opinions are very similar, but there are also a few that seem to contradict each other more than others do. Philosophers seem to think they know exactly what an action would have to be like in order to be done freely. Robert Kane and Galen Strawson are two philosophers that have very different views regarding free will and what is needed for it to be possible.
The current dictionary definitions of courage are inadequate because they only include references to physical courage and omit instances of inner strength. Three contemporary dictionaries agree closely on the definition although they differ in the order of importance. Webster's New World Dictionary describes courage as "an attitude of facing and dealing with anything recognized as dangerous, difficult or painful, instead of withdrawing from it," and The American Heritage Dictionary gives a similar explanation. While The Shorter Oxford Dictionary concurs with this meaning, it states that the primary definition is "spirit, mind, or disposition."
What is courage? Courage is the spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, and bravery. Courage to me is bravery, heroic acts, and people that put their life in danger. Many people show acts of courage everyday in the world. You might not know if you are showing courage, unless it is a big act.
As stated by Yeung Kathryn, “You get in life what you have the courage ask for”, courage is a highly acclaimed trait that shows the action on the consequences of fears and doubts. This is not a single characteristic. It is the combination of numerous quality such as bravery, passion, faith and so on which makes a perfect human being. Though it is very easy to pronounce, it needs lots of struggle to raise up. The value of courage is profound by motivation behind it. By being brave simply is not considered as courage.
Say someone was on the ledge of a building contemplating jumping, and a citizen of the city decided to get on that ledge to convince the jumper it wasn’t worth it, I would consider the citizen of the city courageous. This person is risking their life to help another person, they are also putting their own life in danger to try and get the jumper to safety. This courageous citizen is putting the jumpers life ahead of their own because they believe that jumping would not be worth it. This, in my opinion, is a prime example of an act of courage.
