One of the best explanations of courage is the following by Maya Angelou: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtues with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Her explanation summarizes all that courage can lead you to who you are in life. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, despite disapproval, pain, fear, uncertainty, or intimidation. Courage is challenging what is normal. Courage is giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Courage is using whatever power available to educate the world about injustice. Courage is following your heart even when the path is not known. Courage is trying after failing. …show more content…
Anthony both portray courage when they speak up for people who don’t have power, even though they are afraid, and even though others disapprove of them. Harriet Tubman risked her life to help free enslaved African-Americans. Susan B. Anthony did the same by seeking women’s equality and improvement in the lives of families when she advocated for temperance. Susan notes how unusual it was for women to not only speak in public, but to challenge the establishment. She says, “…alongside Amelia Bloomer and Antoinette Brown, raising our voices on temperance and the rights of women. We were viewed as curiosity- women who dared speak in public!” Harriet conveys that taking actions to free slaves was dangerous, but she did it because her convictions required her to be true to herself: “I spent most of the night knee deep in a swamp, shivering in the dark until it was time to move my party to the next station.” Harriet had very strong beliefs, and she stood up for them, no matter what it took. A last example is, “I hid at the home until arrangements were made and the party of eleven could be on the move to Canada and freedom. By this time, I was fully committed to serve as a conductor to the Underground Railroad.” This quote shows how she was able to stand up for people who don’t have power when she had courage. In the book Chasing Freedom, Susan and Harriet portray courage by speaking up when it was rare to do so, standing up for people who don’t have power, and doing no matter what it took to follow their
and make fun of black elders. And would talk to them any kind of way.
As I was reading through the story “Champion of the World” by Maya Angelou (written in 1959) I noticed that the author uses many different techniques like sentence structure, pathos, and logos to show and tell what she supports.
To me having courage makes me feel stronger than ever. Courage is one of the things that helped me join NJROTC, and it helps me get through the days. Before I learned what courage was or even used it, I was too shy to even say my name out loud. But when I joined NROTC they helped me break my shyness. And now I see clear, I know in the future courage will help me stand up and make it to my goals in life.
“A Worn Path” told the story of an old woman named Phoenix Jackson. She had to make a long, adventurous journey to town in order to receive medicine for her grandson who had fallen ill. Phoenix Jackson was determined to reach her destination, and she did not let anything stand in her way. Throughout her voyage, she displayed characteristics of being brave, unselfish, and senile.
Courage is the thing which can be found in a child to an old man. It needs a lot of courage to take out courage from the heart. It is like a brain. It depends on the person, how and when he uses it. This tiny word has the power to convey the whole gesture of a person. According to Harper Lee?s genius ?To Kill a Mockingbird?, Courage is when you know you are licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through it through no matter what.
“On the Pulse of Morning” by Maya Angelou. "On the Pulse of Morning," is a poem written by Maya Angelou. In this poem, Angelou depicts personification. Personification is an element of literature in which an object or animal is given human characteristics. Angelou uses personification to give the rock, the river, and the tree the ability to speak to the reader. In "On the Pulse of Morning", Angelou writes, "But today, the rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully, Come, you may stand upon my back and face your distant destiny, but seek no haven in my shadow.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
In Maya Angelou’s third book of poetry And Still I Rise, the personal struggles of the African American Woman are brought to life through poetic works. With inspirations drawn from personal journeys of Maya Angelou herself, powerful poems praise, celebrate, and empathize with the feminine colored experience. Angelou’s writing sheds glaring light on themes of feminine power, beauty, and perseverance, raising the African American Woman to a pedestal that demands respect and adoration. For Angelou’s audience, the everyday woman is presented equipped with all the necessities to thrive and shine in the face of adversity. In Maya Angelou’s works “Phenomenal Woman”, “Woman Work”, and “Still I Rise”, audiences are able to connect to the strength and virtue of the woman that is brought to life through the praising of femininity, and through its power to make an impact on society.
Courage is when you keep on pushing, and pushing, until you get to the next level and don’t let anyone get in your way ,no matter what happens. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry By:Mildred D. Taylor, there is a sassy young girl named Cassie Logan. She is always sassy and she stands up for what she believes in and never lets anyone let her down. Cassie shows courage when she stood up to the Simm’s, when it was the first day of school for Little man, and when Cassie helped T.J. whenever he was hurt very badly. Cassie’s actions show that she isn’t afraid to stand up for her beliefs and her actions also show that she is very brave and wont let anyone stand in her way.
Courage can lead to positive changes since you are motivated to stand up and make a difference and if one did not have courage, they would not attempt to do such a thing at all; If Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Abraham Lincoln did not have any courage what so ever to make a change, our society would still be in slavery and also would not believe in equality for all. I strongly believe that if you have courage, you will change something for the best. The reason why I believe in courage being the number 1 way to lead to positive changes is because in the book The Cay Written by Theodore Taylor, Phillip was lost in a shipwreck and was taken in by a crew member of the ship named Timothy both which had sailed to a nearby cay, they both were stranded on the cay with limited resources only to have Timothy die from a fever and Phillip become blind, Phillip had the courage to live on his own and ended up being rescued, which in a way means that Phillip did not give up because he
Comparing Life Doesn't Frighten Me and Still I Rise by Maya Angelou This essay will compare and contrast 'life doesn't frighten' me by Maya Angelou and 'Still I Rise' by Maya Angelo on the theme of fear and. pride will be explored in this essay. The theme of fear and pride is discussed in this essay because in one of the poems she is scared of little things that scare and there is nothing to be scared of like the dark, but in the other poem pride is the theme because she is proud of her color. One of the main similarities between the texts is that the poems both use the same repetition.
Being courageous can be difficult because we as people often do not like putting ourselves into a situation that may be difficult or uncomfortable for us. But, as people we are put into many different situations in which we must have courage. When most people think of courage they relate this to standing up in front of a crowd, making decisions that may be the “unpopular” thing to do, or standing up to someone or for something we believe in. When people think of courage they often think of having a powerful feeling that makes you want to do something out of the ordinary, or out of your comfort zone that could cause “pain or difficulty” (“Courage”). A person that comes to mind when I think of showing courage is Odysseus, from The Odyssey. Odysseus
The poem "Phenomenal Woman is a poetic poem that women can relate to. It is a celebration of womanhood and femininity It expresses the jealousy, difference, and attitude that women see towards each other and how mean persee them. Every stanza is filled with explanations on how a woman should be confident with the way she looks and reveals woman 's attributes as a phenomenal woman. Angelou tries to show her confidence by stating the body parts that show that confidence and inner strength. This can be seen every line of the poem. This shows her strong self-confidence when expressing the way she feels personally about herself. She shows that even though she is not the cute, petite, women that modern society deems as highly valuable, women do not have to look like a model to consider themselves beautiful, worth looking at. Women today put themselves down because they
What is courage? Courage is the spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, and bravery. Courage to me is bravery, heroic acts, and people that put their life in danger. Many people show acts of courage everyday in the world. You might not know if you are showing courage, unless it is a big act.
In this world, there are many courageous people mentioned on the television. The action movies are always talking about how courage is the key to save the world. The superheroes in the movie are always destined to make a courageous choice to save the day. But in this modern society, what is a real courage? What kind of action is a courageous act? Courage is something that anyone can achieve yet it might be the hardest thing for people. For an act to be courageous it must comply with the following criteria:
