An act of courage comes when one risks their life while reacting to a certain situation at a particular moment. Courageousness often happens with split-second situations which can be risky and or an act that wouldn’t normally be done. For an act to be courageous it must follow the following criteria: First, a courageous act must be known to the person that it’s dangerous. Most people wouldn't even think about doing an act that was dangerous even if they would be labeled as a courageous person afterward. If an act is risky it is hard to get someone to do it because the majority of people need not be injured in order to go to work or even just do normal everyday activities. Although most may not actively put their lives in dangerous situations …show more content…
For an act to be courageous, it must be your own want not following footsteps. If one were to do a courageous act and then someone else wanted to do that same act to get the positive recognition then that will not be considered an act of courage. For one to get the recognition for the courage they must have done the act on their own without the following of footsteps from someone else. For an act to be courageous, it must be helpful towards others. To be noticed for doing a courageous act you would typically need to be around others, therefore, for a courageous act to be recognized you would need to perform an act that helped others. If you were at the same lunch table as someone who was getting picked on and you just say they're you would be considered a bystander along with many other people. However, if you had decided to stand up for the person who was getting picked on you might be recognized as someone who has …show more content…
Say someone was on the ledge of a building contemplating jumping, and a citizen of the city decided to get on that ledge to convince the jumper it wasn’t worth it, I would consider the citizen of the city courageous. This person is risking their life to help another person, they are also putting their own life in danger to try and get the jumper to safety. This courageous citizen is putting the jumpers life ahead of their own because they believe that jumping would not be worth it. This, in my opinion, is a prime example of an act of courage. Therefore, If an act were to be courageous it has to be dangerous and risky but it also has to help others. The one performing the act must be able to make split-second decisions, however, they can not follow the footsteps of other to be labeled as courageous. One must also put others life before their own. Courageous acts are not selfish and they have to meet some aspect of the criteria in order to be recognized as an act of
There are many other things that take courage to do including public speaking, standing up for those who are unable to do it themselves, and even getting up on a stage and performing in front of a large crowd. For many, public speaking is extremely hard and can be quite debilitating, and for someone to ignore these fears, be courageous, and speak from the heart to a large crowd can be quite an accomplishment. There are also many courageous men and women in the military that are willing to give their lives for the defense of their nation. Some view this as the ultimate form of courage, and in some cases it is, but what takes more courage, dying for a cause or living to be there to pick up the pieces and clean up the mess? Showing true courage is not always the most popular, glamorous, or easy thing to do. Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage is strength in the face of pain or grief. Throughout the course of World War 2, there were many people who acted in a courageous manner, as portrayed by Markus Zusak in his novel 'The Book Thief'. Weather it was putting their entire life on the line just to save some strangers from possible torture, hiding illegal people in their own houses with the possibility of being killed or smuggling thousands of people out of the Ghettos and into hiding places at the risk of death, there were some extraordinarily courageous humans in World War 2 who not only saved other people lives, but they did it all at
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. Who would imagine, George C. Wallace an American hero. Strong, courageous, noble and thoughtful are a few words used to describe a hero. However through their individual journeys they both learned how to humble themselves for the greater good of their society.
The option of volunteering to fight for freedom was placed before these young men. They didn’t have to come together and choose to fight. Courageous actions can happen by saying hello to someone. Saying hi to someone might be really hard. If talking to someone frightens you and you defy that fear, by definition you are courageous. Courage is also part of growing up. Going throughout life without facing challenges makes it hard to progress. Writing essays may be your fear. If you never face your fear of writing essays, you won’t learn to write them. Morals are also a factor in being courageous. Not swearing might be a challenge, but strong morals can make difficult choices easy. Courage comes from choices, and strong morals and standards can help you make good choices. Loyalty and respect are a few of moral values. The 2000 Stripling Warriors had moral values because they were loyal to their
To be courageous, it doesn't mean you have to save a city, or fight against an evil villain (although being courageous). To be courageous, all you have to do is be brave and express yourself. In the book "Jasper Jones", Charlie shows courage by doing just that! The book “Jasper Jones”, written by Craig Silvey that has been awarded the Michael Printz Award, starts off with the main character, Charlie, who soon to his un knowing, is being called upon by someone knocking on his window. He looked over and saw him… Jasper Jones. Jasper was considered by the town as a hooligan, a good for nothing, a criminal. But, Jasper needed his help. This type of courage is shown by Bilbo as he accepts and departs on his adventure. The hobbits of Bilbo’s town frowned upon adventures and considered them to be dangerous and wasteful, yet Bilbo went on one because he thought it was right, thereby showing Bilbo’s courageous nature as he defied the status quo and society’s slander, thus making him an admirable character to many of today’s people as they do not have the courage to defy their status
Heroism. Heroism is “heroic conduct” or “courageous action”(“Heroism”). People throughout America’s history, and the world’s history, for more than hundreds of years, have satisfied the standards of heroism, rising above and doing what is right. Heroism doesn’t have to mean saving somebody’s life. To be a hero, one does not need a cape or a villain to fight. Exhibiting acts of heroism can be as small helping retrieve a cat from a tree or as large as helping put out the fire of a burning building. Whether one’s acts of heroism are miniscule or major, they occur every day by ordinary people, proving their extraordinary abilities. After World War II ended, many acts of heroism were displayed that are still remembered today, specifically involving Operation Little Vittles. Over two million citizens living in West Berlin were doomed, cut off from the outside world by the Russians, praying for a miracle. Their wish came true when a handful of pilots agreed to drop thousands of tons of food and fuel from the air in Berlin. One of these esteemed pilots goes by the name of Gail Halvorsen, who changed the situation of the Russian blockade for the better. Halvorsen made the daring decision to drop thousands of individual packages of candy to all of the sweet deprived citizens of West Berlin. Pilot Gail Halvorsen contributed a daring effort by flying day in and day out dropping candy all with the hopes of trying to improve the awful conditions for those involved in the blockade, putting smiles on people’s faces and living up to the standards of heroism.
To do something courageous is to do something that causes fear, but the situation has been assessed, and the person has decided the benefit outweighs the risk involved. Something such as killing a poisonous spider because one knows they can and that it will save their friend, for example. Killing that spider causes fear, but having the spider dead is best for everyone. Realistically the danger is minimal, since spiders are much smaller than humans. To do something brave is to ignore potential fear or to lack fear where others would be afraid. Eating an earthworm sandwich based on a dare would be considered a brave act. It is not a well thought-out plan and one would not truly realize that it was stupid until after the fact. Bravery and stupidity have closer meanings than bravery and courage. A brave act doesn’t necessarily have to be quick, but it usually is, because the fear is ignored, not really fought; otherwise, it would be courage. It all depends on context. Many people may see it as the other way around. This is a valid opinion, but courage being more of a personality trait, and bravery being a short term thing makes more sense. This is because of the feeling or emotion one gets from the words themselves. The noun, courage, gives off a stronger emotion, because it is the root of its adjective, courageous. As a noun, bravery’s root is brave, which is the adjective, making it feel
Personally, I believe that even the smallest acts require bravery at times and I’m sure many people concur. Most people don’t realize it, but there are as many acts of courage as there are opportunities lost. Throughout our day we have lots of chances to change our lives for the better.
