Patients Reported Outcome Measures (PREM)

Patient reported experience measure is one of the important performance perspectives for the RCC. This perspective is related to the patient's experience through the treatment and care process. A set of performance measures can be developed that could enable the RCC to achieve its objectives and to enhance the patient's processes based on the patient's experience.

The key performance measures chosen are waiting times, facilities, caring and communication. The waiting times for each treatment stage of the patient process represent an important element in the patient experience. The less time the patients need to wait to access a treatment stage, the more probable it is that the cancer can be controlled or cured at earlier stage. This has also an impact on the patient’s mental well being and the reaction towards treatment.

The features of the facilities at which the patients receive their treatment has also an impact on the patient's experience. The advancement of the facilities, the cleanliness and the other general conditions of the premises affect the patient's perception of the treatment.

Managers can set targets, incentives, and even reporting to help manage performance. Kaplan considers that finance can play both an constraining and enabling role (2001). Saying this, finance will tend to not be the primary objective in non-profit organizations. Furthermore, it is argued that performance measurement should be centered around the outcomes the organization will like to achieve, rather than the implemented projects.
