This chapter aims to answer the sub-research question: “What is the innovative position of Patient Innovation (PI) and what value propositions can be generated from the innovation?” In order to answer this question, the innovation study follows the framework suggested by Alänge and Lundqvist (2014), which includes an explanation of the platform, the Intellectual Property (IP) protection, current status, next steps, value visions, and competitive landscape of PI. In addition, an explanation about the healthcare system in Norway and the expected impact of PI on it are also presented in this chapter. However, the market quantification and financial plan are presented in the business plan part of this thesis.
Next, the innovative position of PI is determined by utilizing the classic four quadrants of innovations (Abernathy and Clark, 1985). However, this thesis employs the enhanced version of the four quadrants framework, which is proposed and adapted by Christensen (1997) and Carpenter (2009). Furthermore, PI’s activities related to the framework of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is also discussed in this chapter.

Healthcare is a dynamic, ever-changing environment. The complex circumstances around daily conversations that encompass life-threatening decisions are critical. In order to deliver high quality care, individuals must be able to communicate effectively. In the perfect world of communication, everyone receives the exact same information and is able to respond the exact same way. Unfortunately, communication breakdown is a prevalent issue among hospitals. On any given day of the hospital arena, multiple interactions take place. Some of the dialogue is planned, and some is not. While hospital departments are living in different silos within the same organization, the cultures may vary among the employees. Hospital leadership fosters the importance of collaboration within the organization and depends on the employees to ultimately drive the process. In order to overcome communication barriers in the workplace, conversations must occur. Engaging in daily face-to-face meetings with employees increases positive work culture, morale and overall productivity.

Though the word ‘innovation’ conveys a sense of excitement related to modernization, advancement and progression, its concept has been around since the beginning of time. The most basic definition for innovation comes from Webster’s Dictionary (2013) as “a new idea, device, or method.” Innovation is defined by numerous disciplines or occupations differently, based on the particular field from which the explanations originate. An insightful and appropriate definition related to healthcare, located in current literature, is given here: “the introduction of a new concept, idea, service, process, or product aimed at improving treatment, diagnosis, education, outreach, prevention and research, and with the long term goals of improving quality, safety, outcomes, efficiency and costs” (Omachonu, Vincent and Einspruch, 2010, p. 5).
