I believe that with his quotation Lord Chesterfield meant that if you can connect with a person’s pride, love, pity or ambition the chances of any of these causing an argument is less likely. I do partially agree with his quote because all actions are caused by a passion whether those actions are reasonable or not. Reason is connected with emotions and when emotions take over the actions caused by these can be unreasonable. Passions can cause a person to act spontaneously, therefore reacting in ways that can later bring regret to you and the persons around you. When Hamlet discovers that his father has been murdered the only thought on his mind was to get revenge. As he plotted the murder of his uncle Claudius who was the murderer other tragedies happen along the way. Six other people died before his father’s death was finally avenged and one of them was his mother. He quickly realized that his thirst for vengeance created other unnecessary tragedies and he felt as much of a bad person as he considered his uncle Claudius to be. If Hamlet would’ve thought thoroughly about the consequences of his actions the outcome could have been different. Love can cause a person to be in a relationship even though that may not be the best for that person. For example, when a person is in love they don’t focus on the imperfections of the person. However, as time goes by and they spend more time together they come to realize there is important aspects of that person’s personality that they don’t like. Eventually, this creates tension between the couple and they end up splitting. This type of situation is not only seen many times with friends and family but also on television with celebrities. It happens more often than not that celebrities meet and soon they come to find out that the relationship is not what they expected. There is also the love from parents to their children which can be stronger than reason. No matter what their children do their parents are always forgiving. They will do whatever it takes to not see their children suffer. One example that comes to mind is in the book Persepolis when Marji’s parents sent her away permanently. “This time, you’re leaving for good, you are a free woman. The Iran of today is not for you. I forbid you to come back” (341)! Marji’s parents were willing to make the sacrifice of not having their daughter next to them in order for her to be happy. They realized that in Iran Marji would never have happiness or tranquility. As heartbreaking as this could have been they were unselfish and set her free. Not many would be able do something like this
