Ever since she was a child, Christine Enockson had a passion for education. Living in a small Wisconsin town, it was rare for there to be a child with special needs. Once Christine, or Chris as many people call her, discovered how school was different for these children, she passionately pursued a career to help those children. This passion led her to decide to be a foster parent. Throughout her life, Chris has made a difference in the lives of many children, including her own. Even though Chris has faced many hardships in her life, she continues to stay positive because of her faith. “I always knew I wanted to be a teacher,” she stated. Her passion for helping children with special needs was developed at a later age. The reason why Chris decided to be a special education teacher was because of two twin boys in her grade who had special needs. Chris was only in kindergarten at the time, but she recalls that one of these boys did not get to go to school. The other boy, Jimmy, could come to school, but he would have to leave halfway through the school day. Chris was confused and upset about how Jimmy could not be at school and asked her mom about this. One of her children, Jonathan, died at a young age to due a heart defect. Because of this, she has faced a lot of grief. “If one of us is down, the other helps us up,” Chris explained on how she overcomes some of her challenges. Having close friends and family also helps her combat difficulties. It is also extremely helpful for her to have people still value and remember Jonathan’s life. Chris is also an extremely optimistic person. She says she is positive because of her husband, her daily devotionals, having coffee with her friends, doing things that make her happy, like crafting, and helping others. The mothers, Mary and Joy, push their sons to achieve an education in different ways. Mary, Other Wes’s mother, enrolls him in public schools and expects him to take control of his life and work hard. This arrangement does not work favorably; Other Wes stopped attending to school two years before he graduated high school. He eventually received his GED from Job Corps. On the other hand, Wes’s mother, Joy, enrolls her son in private school to avoid the public schools in the area. First, she sends him to Riverdale. Wes hates it there. He got suspended numerous times and let his grades slip. He was in charge of his own fate at Riverdale, but he botched it up. Finally, Joy sends Wes to military school. He is given a second chance, but “by the end of the fourth day at military school, [Wes] had run away four times” (90). Eventually, after an abrupt phone call, he agrees to stay. He embraces military school, and thrives there. He has the chance to escape Other Wes’s fate, which even Wes agree could have been his own. In the high criminal neighborhood where the other Wes lived, people who live there need a positive role model or a mentor to lead them to a better future. Usually the older family members are the person they can look up to. The other Wes’s mother was not there when the other Wes felt perplexed about his future and needed her to support and give him advises. Even though the other Wes’s mother moved around and tried to keep the other Wes from bad influences in the neighborhood, still, the other Wes dropped out of school and ended up in the prison. Because Mary was busy at work, trying to support her son’s education, she had no time and energy to look after the other Wes. For this reason, she did not know how the other Wes was doing at school and had no idea that he was escaping school. She missed the opportunities to intervene in her son’s life and put him on the right track. Jill Brown is a 38 year old mother of one, who lives in Carmel with her husband, and son Mathew. Mathew is 12 and is in the 6th grade at Carmel middle school. He keeps Jill busy by playing basketball and golf all year round. Jill is married to her husband Andrew who works for Alison transmission as a shift manager. With their provided dual incomes, they are able to live in an upper middle class home, and go on vacation once or twice a year. Unfortunately, Andrew has to work 3rd shift and is not home in the evenings to help Jill with the majority of the responsibilities. Jill also continually volunteers at St. Jude Children’s Hospital where she manages activities for children to do. Jill is an only child and also went through her entire education at Carmel. She grew in a home with both parents living together. Her mother Janice, worked as a receptionist for an insurance company in Indianapolis. Her father Daniel worked for a used car dealership on the east side of Indianapolis. They were very involved in Jill’s schooling and taught her to be disciplined and work hard. She spent most of her summers with her grandparents who lived on Brookeville Lake, in Richmond Indiana. Going through school her father allowed her to follow him around and learned how to speak to customers to build good communication skills.
Kay Granger was born on January 18th, 1943 in Greenville, Texas. She grew up in Fort Worth, Texas after moving out with her family from Greenville and attended Eastern Hills High School. Subsequent to graduating from high school with a diploma, she then went to Texas Wesleyan University where she earned a bachelor's degree in education for english and journalism in 1965. Next she worked as a high school teacher where she was able to detect problems within her environment. Another job she pursued after becoming a teacher was an insurance agent. There was not much significance in this part of her life, but her career took a turn due to her involvement in the community she had grown up in.

Jake is described as an energetic third grader with a learning disability.
