In my opinion parent engagement is when a parent is engaged and active in their child’s life. An engaged parent would engage in discussion with the child, ask questions and develop a strong relationship with both the child and in terms of education, their educators. An engaged parent would keep in contact with their child’s educators, ask questions, be involved with school projects and work with both their child and their child’s educator. This is different from my understanding of a parent who is just involved. Parent involvement is when a parent may show up for parent teacher interviews and for a Christmas concert. A parent who is involved will only speak to their child’s educator a couple of times

On the other hand an involved parent may only take part in one school function per school year. I find that for most people it is very hard to distinguish between engagement and involvement. Some people may even think that they mean the same thing. I believe that it is important for people to be able to know and understand the difference between the two, especially if they have children. Growing up I have always had engaged parents, my parents would always do as much as they could and always built relationships with my educators throughout the years. Looking back now I feel that it benefited me immensely both in my educational journey but also in my relationship with my parents. I feel that having an engaged parent allows a child to feel more valued, appreciated and I feel that it allows a child to feel like their parent’s wholehearted care about them and their education. That is not to say that involved parents do not feel the same way about their children. Some parents may not have the time, energy or ability to be an engaged parent. Some parents may even go through phases where they are engaged and then when they are just involved. In both situations there are great outcomes, but being engaged parent versus an involved parent in my opinion is just about

There are many approaches to parenting and everyone has their own preferences as to what they think is best. In a fast paced rush around society, it is hard to know what the best choices are for your children. There is a struggle to balance what needs to be done with what can be done, and this has negative and positive feedback on the children. Parents play a critical role in shaping and guiding their children into functional confident adults. An effective parent will learn as they teach in order to grow into understanding with their children.
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based practice in the treatment of emotional and behavioral disorders for young children. This family centered treatment approach emphasizes on improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and changing parent-child interaction patterns. During PCIT, therapists coach parents via one-way mirror while they interact with their child. The therapist teaches the caregiver strategies that will promote positive behaviors in children who have disruptive or externalizing behavior problems (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 1). The use of live- coaching helps the parent gain strategies in the moment, and allows the therapist to see the different dynamics of the parent-child relationship.

Participation can include attending school functions, helping for assignments at home, positive feedback about education, and volunteering in the school or classroom. A child’s first teacher is his or her mother and father. As a parent, involvement in the education process in the early years includes engaging the child through age appropriate games, regular reading, and simply interacting on a daily basis. A child that is engaged in this way are set up to develop into students who succeed academically. Once that child attends school, parental involvement shows that the parent places value on education. Furthermore, “staying connected to the classroom gives you ideas of how to expand what she learns at school,” (Driscoll & Nagel, 2010) thus providing parents with additional tools to implement in the home to continue the teaching process even after the school day has ended.

Parents who are involved with their children, who know where they are after school and have met most of their friends, have a positive effect on their children’s lives. Parents who are involved in their children’s lives are more likely to have children who are less likely to participate in risky behaviors such as smoking or drinking alcohol. Parent involvement is one of the most influential aspects of student motivation. The parents are the initial teachers of the child before the child goes to school and encounters education through a teacher. If a parent is completely engaged in the learning process with a child, there can be growth between the child and the parent simultaneously. The parents set an example for the child, so that the child understands that help is in the classroom and at home. Alma Wright, a first and second grade teacher, believes that parents in the classroom are a good way to stimulate children. She says, “Their active participation is a positive influence. The school is open for parents to share their talents and motivate their children” (Drew, Olds, and Olds, 1974, p. 71).
To conclude, my research shows a clear link between parental involvement and children performing better in school. Children who's parents are involved in their education are showing better performance and are achieving higher grades. They also show better behaviour, more enthusiasm, ambition and higher levels of engagement. compared with children who's parent are not involved in their education. My research also shows that parental involvement has great benefits for both children and parents in many ways, so much so that the most effective schools are those who encouraged parents to be involved.

Parents should be talking with your children's teacher and letting her know about your family. The more she knows about your child, the better she will be able to connect with your child.
