This stage contains an exploration of the issue the client has.
The counsellor should allow the client to describe and tell the story with own words. The counsellor should remain non-judgemental, give attention to the client, use active listening skills, and show acceptance and empathy for the client’s situation.
When it’s time the counsellor should use paraphrasing and summarizing to make sure that he/she understood everything correctly and to allow the client to confirm the facts and feelings, and focus on the most important issues.
By using open questions, he/she should allow the client to identify the emotions, and try to reflect on and deal with them in the most appropriate way, which will lead us to stage two.

Addictions can cause suffering not only for addicted people, but also for their family and friends.
They can be referred to abusing alcohol, drugs, smoking, eating, gambling, having sex, using phones or Internet, etc.
Addiction counseling can help people to recognize their condition and can be the first step to recovery. Typically it’s combined with medication treatment.
Talking therapies are commonly used to deal with addictions as they help to clear up the mind, identify and correct behaviours and target the roots triggering addictive behaviour, which, thanks to that, can be avoided.
Counselling can provide a new way of thinking, feeling and acting to remove the triggers for abuse and show the world from a different perspective.
Trauma usually occurs when person is overwhelmed by a stressful event happened in life, which can cause the feeling of being afraid, vulnerable, disconnected or isolated.

Counselling can be an affective form of support for people with mental health issues. It can help to change the negative pattern of thinking and behaving, explore new ways to cope with problems, channel emotions and encourage using own insight in problem solving.
Relationships are very important in our life; they have to offer love, happiness, fulfilment, support, and etc. but when they break down or are in danger of, people may feel anxious, lonely, disappointed or unsure what to do. Sometimes the relationship doesn’t meet our expectations or is disappointing, what can have crucial impact on our happiness.
The problems relationships may face are:
- Affairs and betrayal.
- Separation or divorce.
- Family issues.
- Cross-cultural relations.
Counselling in such cases can be offered to individuals or couples, depending on circumstances.
