In the novel Paradise of the Blind, written by Duong Thu Huong, the importance of a motherly figure in society is illustrated through Huong’s depiction of both the mother Que and the Aunt Tam. By analyzing the actions of Que, her maternal instincts are shown at times to be very strong while being the opposite at other times. Whereas in Aunt Tam’s case her maternal instincts are shown to be very impactful due to the way she treats and protects the daughter Hang. Hang’s development to an older women is very based on the way she is raised by both her mother and aunt. In the novel, Huong uses contrasting diction in order get an understanding in the way Hang feels being raised by her mother Que. For example, when describing Hang’s relationship
with her mother Que, the author Huong says that “during Hang’s early childhood, the love between mother and daughter prevailed, but as Hang grew older a distance between them developed. Hang began to lose respect for her mother because of the way she always seeked the approval of Chinh”. The way the relationship was described by the author Huong really showed a shift in Hang’s view of her own mother Que. It shows how the mother Que stumbled to satisfy the necessities of her brother Chinh, which overall ended up being more important than the life of her daughter Hang. This action point ended up causing the main conflict between the mother and daugher. Hang began to realize that her mother’s actions were very selfish even after knowing what Chinh, the brother, had done to their family. In Hang’s relationship with her mother it seems as if the attention is mostly based on the family relatives, them being the cousins, brothers and uncle’s. They care about the families loyalty and honor. The way Que shows her love towards Hang is throughout small gifts and showing her appreciation to a certain point. In the novel, Huong uses LITERARY DEVICE to show how Hang viewed her family. For example, when illustrating Hang’s thoughts on the family and mother, the author Huong says “I didn’t understand this family. I had no desire to ever return to this place. From then on, my mother went alone”. (pg 125) This shows how Hang doesn’t enjoy being with her family and mother for the reason that it seems as if she doesn't fit in with them.

The contrast Huong provides between the reality of Hang’s impoverished life and the beauty of the scenery that she experiences, emphasise the powerful effect the landscape has on her. When describing the first snowfall she ever observed, Hang noticed that the snowflakes “flood[ed] the earth with their icy whiteness,” this observation “pierc[ing her] soul like sorrow.” The scenery had such a moving effect on Hang, perhaps because she longed for the familiar sight of a Vietnamese landscape. Then recalling a time when her mother took her to a beach, the exquisiteness of the scene at dawn was equally emotionally poignant to Hang, not because she wished for a recognisable sight, but because it was such an extreme difference from the slum in Hanoi where she grew up. The sensory details of her childhood remain with Hang even years later, acting as a reminder of her humble beginnings even as she advances in life. The stench of “rancid urine” that permeated the walls of the slum and the hut where she and her mother lived, with its persistently leaky roof “patched together out of…rusty sheet metal” ; build a vivid picture of poverty. To then be exposed to the breathtaking vista of a natural landscape, having experienced the scarceness of beauty in the slums that is her home, causes distress in Hang.
The family's personal encounters with the destructive nature of the traditional family have forced them to think in modern ways so they will not follow the same destructive path that they've seen so many before they get lost. In this new age struggle for happiness within the Kao family, a cultural barrier is constructed between the modern youth and the traditional adults, with Chueh-hsin teeter tottering on the edge, lost between them both. While the traditional family seems to be cracking and falling apart much like an iceberg in warm ocean waters, the bond between Chueh-min, Chueh-hui, Chin and their friends becomes as strong as the ocean itself. While traditional Confucianism plays a large role in the problems faced by the Kao family, it is the combination of both Confucianism and modernization that brings the family to its knees. Chueh-hsin is a huge factor in the novel for many reasons.
Chapter one, The Observers, in the Death of Woman Wang demonstrates the accuracy of the local historian; Feng K'o-ts'an, who compiled The Local History of T'an-ch'eng in 1673. The descriptive context of the Local History helps the reader to understand and literally penetrate into people's lives. The use of records of the earthquake of 1668, the White Lotus rising of 1622 and rebels rising vividly described by Feng the extent of suffering the people of T'an-ch'eng went through. Jonathan Spence stresses on how miserable the two-quarter of the seventeen-century were to the diminishing population of the county. The earthquake claimed the lives of nine thousand people, many others died in the White lotus rising, hunger, sickness and banditry. P'u Sung-ling's stories convey that after the loss of the wheat crops there were cases of cannibalism. On top of all of this came the slaughtering of the entire family lines by the bandits. The incredible records of women like Yao and Sun in the Local History present the reader the magnitude of savagery the bandits possessed. All of these factors led to the rise of suicides. The clarity of events Spence given to the reader is overwhelming.

Kingston’s mother takes many different approaches to reach out to her daughter and explain how important it is to remain abstinent. First, she tells the story of the “No Name Woman”, who is Maxine’s forgotten aunt, “’ Now that you have started to menstruate, what happened to her can happen to you. Don’t humiliate us. You wouldn’t like to be forgotten as if you had never been born”’ (5), said Maxine’s mother. Kingston’s aunt was murdered for being involved in this situation. The shame of what Kingston’s aunt brought to the family led them to forget about her. This particular talk-story is a cautionary tale to deter Kingston from having premarital sex and to instill in her fear of death and humiliation if she violates the lesson her mother explained to her. Kingston is able to get pregnant but with the lecture her mother advises her with keeps her obedient. Brave Orchid tells her this story to open her eyes to the ways of Chinese culture. The entire family is affected by one’s actions. She says, “‘Don’t humiliate us’” (5) because the whole village knew about the pregnant aunt and ravaged the family’s land and home because of it.
