Whether a director is creating a full length feature film or a five minute short film, they face many decisions about the best way to communicate a character’s thoughts and feelings and convey their themes and messages in the film. There are many techniques used to convey these themes and noticeable examples in the short films Paperman by Disney and Partly Cloudy by Pixar are music and colour, which can both be used very differently but very effectively to convey the themes of friendship and romance. The musical scores in the two short films are quite different and reflect different things but both work to communicate their themes well. The music in Partly Cloudy doesn’t generally effect the mood of the scene, it is in fact, the other way around. …show more content…
As the music stays mostly the same throughout much of the film, it is what the audience is seeing that changes how the music effects them. Throughout the film the feeling the music gives changes from happy, to whimsical, to sad, and finally back to happy. This is due to the changes and developments that the viewers see in the friendship between the storm cloud and his bird. Occasionally a total silence is used to emphasise moments of tension or importance between the two characters. In contrast to this, Paperman’s music is heavily reflective of what is happening in the scene. It starts off slowly and is almost boring but begins to quicken as the man and woman meet for the first time. It then continues to quicken and swell throughout the film as the characters travel their emotional journey and as the plot develops. It gains an almost hurried pace towards the end before ending similarly to how it began, with only a few piano notes played: but now the music feels more content and happy as opposed to slow and boring. The music in Partly Cloudy is generally more upbeat and consistent, compared to Paperman’s variety of speeds and emotions. Within Partly Cloudy this works to further show the friendship between the cloud and the stork in the film, whereas Paperman’s music clearly shows the overwhelming amount of emotion both characters feel throughout their romance. The differences in the director’s techniques are never clearer between the two films than in their use of colour.
In Partly Cloudy everything is coloured so the director uses shades of black, grey and white to contrast with the rest of the clouds and birds. Everything around the characters is the same as everywhere else which was done to show how much they stand out. The storm cloud is obviously different from the rest of the clouds, who are all happy shades of pink and yellow and other sunset shades, whereas he is dark grey or black depending on his mood. At first the bird doesn’t seem that different to the rest, colour wise, but his white is darker than the other birds and has a generally darker, colouring, showing his connection and friendship to the storm cloud. In Paperman colour is used sparingly. Everything in the film is black and white except for the girl’s lipstick which is a bold and bright red. This serves to show the romantic connection between the two characters and also how she is a break from the black and white world and people all around them. The red of the lipstick is also used to mark a paper, which is also his only connection to her. Red is commonly associated with passion and love which is exactly what the director used this red for, ending the film with the paper plane with her lip mark leading the couple together. Colour was used to make a point in both films, however the statement was given more impact in Paperman with the general use of black and white and the bold statement of the red. The colouring used in Partly Cloudy was more relaxed, using it to solidify a point rather than make
one. Overall, the two film directors choose very different ways of employing cinematic techniques like music and colouring but both decisions were made to convey their respective themes and messages of romance and friendship. The choice in Paperman to use the music more than the colour to communicate made it more emotionally impacting and the black and white contrasting with the red worked to show the romance developing between the characters while the music and colour in Partly Cloudy felt more relaxed and friendly as it was focusing on a friendship rather than a passionate romance. The colour helped to connect the two characters and the music reflected how the characters felt and what the audience was seeing. Although different, all the choices the directors made was to convey their theme in the best way possible and their music and colour choices definitely worked towards that.
After evaluating the 2081 movie, it is apparent the film elements and techniques are important when defining the mood. The four main techniques used throughout the film were lighting, music, sound, and dialogue.
Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man depicts a realistic society where white people act as if black people are less than human. Ellison uses papers and letters to show the narrator’s poor position in this society.

Distinctively visual language and cinematic techniques highlight to the responder the particular literal and metaphorical experiences characters are faced with, within a text. Peter Goldsworthy’s novel Maestro, Don McLean’s song ‘Vincent’ and the intriguing film Australia by Baz Luhrrman, explore the ways in which the human experiences of an individual’s connection to landscape is fundamental in shaping one’s sense of identity, personal growth and development. Composers further explore the realisation that our lives can be enriched by an understanding and appreciation of art as well as a deeper understanding of the importance of love and lust. The depiction of characters is conveyed through distinctively visual images to highlight the subsequent development of courage and resilience leads responders to a deeper understanding of how human experiences can create a sense of individuality.
Therefore, the distinctive visual techniques employed by the composer provide a vehicle for the respondent to understand the ideas and themes prompted by people and their experiences. Tykwer’s film, Run Lola Run demonstrates the effect of the distinctive visual in Lola’s exploration of the themes of chance and time, whilst Mackellar’s poem ‘My Country’ provides the audience with an evocative experience of the Australian environment.
Can color invoke viewers with a certain mood to advance the plot of a video? When a video uses imagery does it in fact create a better video? Is a video’s concepts improved when it applies complex metaphors to help readers visualize subjects difficult to grasp? Animators for Blank and Blank use all of these unique tools to improve the journey on which the audio takes them. Sadly, there are a few cases where they inappropriately use visuals, which can cause some confusion to the viewer. The animators uses color, imagery, and complex metaphors to build a beautiful immersive experience for the viewer.
The Lives of Others experimented with the use of sound as an element to convey narrative structure and did so brilliantly. The use of music is an accomplishment which celebrates the arts as an essential part of our human condition. If our right to express ourselves freely is imposed upon, we can no longer communicate our deepest thoughts and no longer discover that we are all united by the same qualities. Our need for love and companionship transcends our political aspirations or ideological shortcomings. We are human and we need other human in order to give our lives a deeper and richer meaning than just the solitary musings or an ideal world. This film took these ideas and expressed them with a piece of music which was able to break down a wall around a human’s heart and function as a symbol for the greater global instance of the Berlin Wall’s demise.
For this essay I will be looking at the work of Hans Zimmer to discuss how music in film engages the viewer and evokes emotion and pulls the viewer toward the film. Hans Zimmer is a German born music composer. Hans Zimmer’s love of music stems from his childhood when he learned how to play various instruments. Before Zimmer began composing music for films he was in a well-known band. The band was called The Buggles whom were famous for their song Video Killed the Radio Star. After the Buggles Zimmer played in other bands but never had another hit. As Zimmer has progressed as a film composer so has his list of nominations and awards. Zimmer has won 4 Grammy Awards and 2 Golden Globes and many more for his outstanding film scores. The reason I chose to write this essay on Zimmer was that his genres and music score are extremely versatile ranging from animations to comedy to dark thrillers. This is important to highlight as it shows Zimmer can create almost any atmosphere with his music whether it be sad or creating tension that all cause us to engage with the film. Zimmer's use of themes and introduction of different instruments allowed him to create these wonderful engaging film score. In this essay I will look at three films by Hans Zimmer these are The Holiday Rush and Rain Man.
...successful collaboration of sound, colour, camera positioning and lighting are instrumental in portraying these themes. The techniques used heighten the suspense, drama and mood of each scene and enhance the film in order to convey to the spectator the intended messages.
As an audience we are manipulated from the moment a film begins. In this essay I wish to explore how The Conversation’s use of sound design has directly controlled our perceptions and emotional responses as well as how it can change the meaning of the image. Since its inception in 2005, YouTube has grown into the most popular video sharing platform in the world. With its easy to use platform and a massive perspective audience, YouTube connects many content creators with the audience they’re seeking, and introduces many individuals to content and creators they otherwise might have passed over. The sheer amount of content and variety on YouTube has created microcosms of fans, creators, and genres of content, all with their own specific conventions and popular YouTube Stars. One particularly interesting genre that had become popular is the abstract film. In this rhetorical analysis, the conventions of abstract film and storytelling will be reviewed, how one popular abstract artist, Poppy, fits into the genre, and how my own creation, “I’m Poopy” fits into the conventions of Abstract storytelling as well.
Sound is what brings movies to life, but, not many viewers really notice. A film can be shot with mediocre quality, but, can be intriguing if it has the most effective foley, sound effects, underscore, etc. Sound in movies band together and unfold the meaning of the scenes. When actors are speaking, the dialogue can bring emotion to the audience, or, it can be used as the ambient sound. Music is one of the main things to have when filmmaking. The use of Claudia Gorbman’s Seven Principles of Composition, Mixing and Editing in Classical Film gives audiences a perspective of sound, and, how it can have an impact on them.
...n, the use of sound in films is highly significant in the development of the plot and in turn the development of the theme. Although, the sound components play a very significant role individually, it is through the combination and manipulation of such components that the sound design of the sound track has a greater impact emotionally upon the audience. Moreover, the effectiveness of this emotional impact can be significantly increased through the implementation of an effective combination sound to the image. Such combination can be seen within Gravity which exhibits a soundscape that successfully assist in bringing the world of the film to life. Sound is important to films and is an essential feature, many a time an audience will not even self-consciously acknowledge the music or sound effects but if they weren’t there the viewing pleasure would not be as pleasing
