A composer can create images dependant on the form of the language of texts to shape a responders understanding of the ideas and themes prompted by people and their experiences. The German film, ‘Run Lola Run’ written and directed by Tom Tykwer, focuses on the experiences of the protagonist Lola to explore the themes of the inevitable force of time, and the issue of freewill verses determinism. Similarly, Dorothea Mackellar, in her poem ‘My Country’, relies on her experiences of the Australian landscape to convey her love and passion for the country using the language of the distinctive visual. The distinctively visual techniques employed by Tykwer in Run Lola Run, function to raise the importance of time, its inevitability, and intrinsic power over the events in our lives. The premise of the film is based upon the small amount of time Lola has to find 100, 000 marks. Often portrayed ticking slowly towards twelve noon, clocks are a recurring motif reminding the responder of Lola’s race against time. This continual visual reference to clocks is therefore augmented by their ticking sound, sometimes combined with the sound of a beating heart, strengthening the force of time. The opening sequence features a talisman symbolic of a grandfather’s clock to reinforce the significance of time. Tykwer uses a close-up low angle shot of the talisman to portray a submissive view of time, emphasising its importance and reminding the audience of Lola’s journey to overcome it. Animation techniques manipulate the face of the clock, morphing it into a creature that opens its mouth and appears to swallow Lola, indicating how time consumes us. Throughout the opening credits, an animated Lola portrayed running towards a clock highlights the importa... ... middle of paper ... ...etaphor, “Is running in your veins” like blood, recognises the country as an integral part of life. Furthermore, rhythm created by the omission of commas in “sapphire misted mountains” combined with the rhyme scheme of the makes the tribute more powerful. Consequently the language techniques employed by Mackellar, reinforce her passion of Australia whilst also embracing the audience in an evocative image of her personal experience. Therefore, the distinctive visual techniques employed by the composer provide a vehicle for the respondent to understand the ideas and themes prompted by people and their experiences. Tykwer’s film, Run Lola Run demonstrates the effect of the distinctive visual in Lola’s exploration of the themes of chance and time, whilst Mackellar’s poem ‘My Country’ provides the audience with an evocative experience of the Australian environment.
Today, I will be telling my view on Australian texts. I will be analysing the text “The Exotic Rissole” by Tanveer Ahmed.
Peter Sculthorpe is an Australian composer who is renowned for his experimentation and exploration of ideas and symbolism in his music. His music is a representation of his feelings in response to socio-cultural, political and historical viewpoints. For instance, his String Quartet No. 16 is a representation of the emotions of refugees trapped in detention centres. It consists of five movements entitled Loneliness, Anger, Yearning, Trauma and Freedom. Musical elements such as pitch, duration and other expressive devices show how effectively Sculthorpe evokes the feelings of refugees through each movements, especially the movements Trauma and Freedom.
...the reflective camera work and the metaphorical visuals. In the film, it is likewise the language of the camera that creates the spectacle.
"Every second of every day you are faced with a decision that can change your life. The difference between life or death can be decided in a split second" (IMDb). Run Lola Run is an excellent 80-minute German film written/directed by Tom Tykwer and edited by Mathilde Bonnefoy that has a four part "What if" style genre. The movie just throbs with kinetic energy mixed with a case of Monster Energy Drinks. It is so fast-paced that it is like a roller coaster that is unstable with each twist and turn. Run Lola Run will captivate your mind and spirit with beautiful and free form flashes of anticipation, panic, passion, desperation, hesitation, fear and fervor that when all combined is quite invigorating and will significantly exhausts its viewers. The formula editor Mathilde Bonnefoy uses to manage the complex rhythms in this film not only dazzles viewers with the pacing, but it also maintains an extensive focus on what Lola is doing and why she is doing it.
The film Run Lola Run plays with time in order to demonstrate the role of chance in people’s destinies and the importance of cause-effect relationships. The plot of the film centres around Lola, as she tries to gather 100,000 marks to save her boyfriend from being killed. The film is divided into three sections, each begins the same way, but as a result of chance and cause-effect relationships these situations develop differently and have a very different outcomes. In order to show these different outcomes we are shown flash-forward sequences, which show us how the lives of the people Lola runs into have developed and changed after their encounter. In each of the three sections their lives are affected in different ways. Run Lola Run critically observes aspects chance, time, and the cause-effect relationship because the entire film is an expression of chance encounters, the relationship between events and their consequences, all played out in a seemingly never-ending cyclical time span.
Government and its policies have always challenged the debate of the governing factor in our universe, fate or free will. In ancient times, monarchs were believed to have been given a divine will to rule and exert laws, as if their path had been predestined. However, as kingship fell out of influence, our government has considered itself, “by the people.” Modern issues, such as the controversy over the National Minimum Drinking Age, raise questions on the effects of free will and fate, and the association between the two. Viewing this specific contention through the context of Sophocles’ Oedipus the King and Tom Tykwer’s thriller Run Lola Run we can speculate about the role of determinism and free will in our lives.
Run Lola Run directed by Tom Tykwer, was an innovative film that dives deep into philosophy with its spectacular cinematography and enhancing sound track. This film departs from the standard film techniques due to its use of so many methods. There is an interesting fusion of mediums that Tom Tykwer reported was about creating a juxtaposition between all the possibilities of life and all the possibilities of cinema (1). Animation, black and white, and red light scenes are all used. The black and white signifies that the event is in the past. The red light is used when they are contemplating their possible realities in an intimate setting. Animation gives the movie a game like feel reinforcing that we are trying to beat time.
Distinctively visual refers to the actions of a composer to employ specific visuals that effectively represent that composer’s particular message through imagery. Time is a constant force that continually challenges individuals and in turn is a significant factor in resulting future actions. This notion has been displayed in through the cinematic styling of Tom Tykwer in his post-Cold War film "run Lola run”. Comparatively in the still shot poster of the iconic film "back to the future", time is also a significant theme depicted in this text. However unlike run Lola run, the choice of format in addition to its title alludes to the human desire to revert the past and individuals actions in order to change the future. Although being created in different decades and through distinctly different visual techniques, both directors identify the theme of time and portray the different ideas that this theme suggests. “This picture is pure camera: motion and emotion, no other medium can convey those things

... is Tarkovsky’s concentration on temporality, memory, and dream, as well as his use of extended shots of scenery and periods of stillness as methods by which to evoke poetic associations. Ivan’s Childhood sees Tarkovsky’s classic deviation from linear sequentiality and movement beyond conventionally coherent logic.
In this essay I will consider the roles of city and country in three short stories; Water Them Geraniums by Henry Lawson, Short-Shift Saturday by Gavin Casey, and Trees Can Speak by Alan Marshall. I will argue through contributing to character development, they provide insight into the construction of contempory Australian identity. In Water Them Geraniums the outback is shown to be an emasculating force, particularly for women, that strips away their humanity until they function in a mechanical way to survive off the land. In Short-Shift Saturday the narrator is a product of an inherited colonial culture and imagines that it is the alien landscape and culture in which he lives that is the agent of his suffering. In reality, the countryside is used as a device to allow pathetic fallacy, reflecting the emotional state of the main protagonist. In Trees Can Speak the main character is the personification of the land and demonstrates the desirable state of being in harmony with the bush. I will put forward that across these three stories, the relationship between the characters and their environment is used to chart a period of progression from English myths and ideals onto the emergence of an Australian identity.
Jonas Lie’s journey for adventure consisted not just artwork, but the urge to travel. It is with this vision Lie could perceive other cultures, and other’s “reality”, thus giving his paintings more substance, and power. The opening scene of the film with the over voice of a man with and gritty, brisk and bold voice catches the audience’s attention and allows them to question themselves, their perspective and beliefs we encounter a security guard, who neatly parallels life, and the film, with a game of soccer and leaves the audience with their questions unanswered. It is believed that the distinctively visual elements of a text do present new perspectives on old ideas, but how? The German film “Run Lola Run” written by Tom Tywker, engages with the audience in order to open their minds to new ideas and perspectives. In the film the composer has used the forms and features in order to communicate the visual text. The text is created through visual organisation,
The odd elements in The Maze Runner were that the maze changes every single night. You can hear the Maze change up the way in order to try to find the exit and be able to escape from the box that they have been trapped in for a long time. The other odd thing is that Thomas ended up getting attacked by Ben in which he got stung by a Grieber so it made him delirious and wanted to kill him. “It’s all your fault.”(Maze Runner) is what Ben kept telling Thomas. The quote meant that ever since Thomas has arrived a lot of bad things kept happening. So in the Maze Runner there has been so many strange things going on.
